We’re just thrilled to see that he’s finally getting his due, as (Technically, That Was An) Answer Man, courtesy of Glen McGregor at the Ottawa Citizen:

By Wednesday of last week, he had already responded to opposition questions on 419 occasions, compared to 254 responses from Mr. Harper and 124 from Transport Minister and Quebec lieutenant Lawrence Cannon, House records show.

And were it not for the controversy over incentives allegedly offered dying MP Chuck Cadman in 2005, Mr. Van Loan would have racked up even more at-bats. The government assigned affable B.C. MP James Moore to field questions on the Cadman affair and he tallied more than 215 responses in question period this year, which put him third on the Conservative leader board, just behind the prime minister. Ottawa-area MP and parliamentary secretary Pierre Poilievre squeaked into the Top 10 with 66 responses, most on the “in-and-out” election financing controversy.

On just about every other issue — from the Brian Mulroney-Karlheinz Schreiber inquiry, the NAFTA-gate leaks about discussions with the Barack Obama campaign, and Maxime Bernier’s embarrassing meltdown over his former paramour — Mr. Van Loan has fronted the government response day after day.

Mr. Van Loan’s office declined to comment. The only question he doesn’t want to answer, it seems, is why he answers so many questions. [...]

Can’t get “Answer Man” to load but was wondering how many questions were asked by the different Libs – Dion, Iggy, etc.

Do you perchance know? Or know where I could go to check that out?

    Thanks.

Thoroughly enjoying your liveblogging & comments on all things political!

You know, that’s a really good question. Let me see if Glen (who – full disclosure – works in the same row as me in the Hot Room) can give me a top 10. My guess is that Dion and Ignatieff would be in a virtual tie for first place, but it would be interesting to see how the other MPs would rank.

Is Jack Layton “Honourable” in the titular sense?

Hey Kady & Glen – Thanks!!! Interesting to see the breakdown of all opposition parties questions.

  • http://www.macleans.ca Kady O’Malley

He got his Hon. in 2005, according to Wikipedia. (What? I couldn’t find it on the PCO website. Don’t judge.)

I think Jack got his honourable when Paul Martin swore the opposition party leaders into the PCO so they could be briefed on secret national security stuff. That’s back when there was a government trying to be all collegial and make parliament work and what not, and more specifically IIRC to allow them to be briefed on matters around Mahar Arar and the Arar inquiry. Harper was sworn into the PCO May 4, 2004, a few months after Grant Hill (February 19), who was sworn on the same day as Rev. William Alexander Blaikie. It seems the BQ, unsurprisingly, didn’t take Martin up on the offer.

    PCO chronological list.
