I felt that this movie pushed serious boundaries of sexuality and ageing. At first, the sight of a bare-chested, formerly knighted, and 65-year-old Kingsley, hungrily worshipping the supple breasts of one Miss Spanish Beauty, can be rather unsettling.

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I watched Starting Out in the Evening a few nights ago and enjoyed it greatly. I first heard of the movie on your blog (and then searched in vain for a theater playing it in Edmonton) and your enthusiastic commendation of the movie was the reason I picked it up, so thank you very much!

Yes, Elegy made me a bit uneasy too! One would think, with a female director, my unease would be mitigated. But not so much. Thanks for highlighting the May-December indie convention -- few reviewers did. Elegy made me think about May-December in film (http://www.splicetoday.com/moving-pictures/getting-tired-of-may-december -- thoughts?), and I don't think in the end the tradition comes out looking well.
