Emerson and Hearn are out. By an unofficial count, of the 308 individuals who won a seat in the 2006 election, 40 now won’t be seeking office this fall.

Nine vacancies—those left by Benoit Sauvageau, Joe Fontana, Jean Lapierre, Yvan Loubier, Bill Graham, Jim Peterson, Stephen Owen, Michel Gauthier and Gary Merasty—have already been filled through by-elections. Assuming September’s four by-elections are cancelled on account of an October vote, there will be 31 incumbents to be replaced.

    Emerson might have been Harper’s biggest star, but I’m sure in his riding he had a big target on his forehead.

    No, it wasn’t. Harper will always carry a heavy load, as will James Moore, Jason Kenney, Diane Ablonczy, etc etc.

    It’s fascinating that not that many bloc are retiring despite the fact that they are bound to lose seats.

    It’s also interesting that 2 out of 3 Conservative Newfoundland & Labrador MPs are retiring. I imagine without incumbents those seats are going to go to Liberals.

    I was under the impression that Michael Wilson wasn’t expected to stay as embassador in the U.S. past the end of the Bush administration. I suspect David Emerson could become our new U.S. embassador but clearly the man could get any job in the private sector he wants.

    Harper relies on his cabinet very little; he takes his advise from party ideaologues and apparatchiks that he hand selects as advisors. For him, cabinet is a formality.

    Wow, that seems like a long list. What are we going to do without Myron Thompson?

    More to the point, what are the NDP going to do without a number of the big hitters? I know they’re going all “we have star candidates” this time around, but it’ll be weird tuning in and not seeing any of those 3 over in the orange corner.
