The McCains' adoption

by Luiza Ch. Savage on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 8:52pm - 0 Comments

Wes Gullett was just up to tell the story of how he and his wife, and the McCains adopted daughters from an orphanage in Bangladesh run by Mother Teresa:

“Cindy spends much of her time working in places most of us only see on the news. She works with the poor, bringing them food, medical care, and hope. …. On one of these trips she found two girls in desperate need.

One had a severe cleft palate, another had severe malnutrition:

“Cindy McCain decided to bring them home, give them hope, and save their lives.”

“…Cindy had just flown half way around the world with an infant on each arm. She had brought home our infant daughter. To us she looked like an angel. I remember John’s face when he first met his daughter Bridget. He was not the tough war hero… he was full of emotion and love…”

“I know they will always answer the call of those in need because they have done so time and time again throughout their lives.”

“Cindy McCain saved those babies 17 years ago, and those girls have grown up to be beautiful young women.” (He hugs his daughter, Nikki, who has been standing next to him.)

It kind of reminded me of how Hillary Clinton recalled her trip to Kosovo and how she and Chelsea were dropped into enemy fire – NOT.

The story of the depths of how the McCains have lived unprecedented lives of giving and sacrificing for others,

will starkly contrast Obama’s self indulgent Hollywood show.

It’s BS apparently. Cindy never met Mother Teresa. At the time of this incident, Mother Teresa was in Mexico, ill, and was being transported to the US for medical treatment.

Where the hell is the press these days. Both in the US and Canada.

McCains have lied about this, she lied about being an only child, she lied about recipes……yet the folks believe all the garbate that is spewed.

I don’t trust the media any more.

As an adoptive parent to be, I feel that the McCain campaign has a real opportunity to be advocates for adoption and adoptees in general, but instead are using their PERSONAL adoption experience to gain recognition and political status as so called “heroes.” I feel terrible for their daughter. Why don’t they share the details of Cindy McCain’s labor and delivery of their other children? Because it’s PERSONAL and it would be disrespectful to their kids to do so. What a burden to have to carry around…”I’m the rescued one”…”aren’t my parents amazing?”…”everyone should vote for them because they saved me”. On top of exploiting her, the way in which they adopted her was extremely unusual and does not represent the international (or domestic) adoptoin process in the United States accurately. You CAN NOT just hop on a plane, visit an orphanage and bring a baby home. Don’t I wish it was that simple. The process is slow and there are many things that can go wrong. I do hope that if McCain makes it to the White House, adoption will continue to be an important issue for him…just not at the expense of his daughter.

Just to be clear. No one last night asserted Cindy McCain met Mother Teresa on this particular trip.
The campaign had made such claims in the past and had to correct themselves.
