Romney: get rid of "Liberal Washington"

by Luiza Ch. Savage on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 9:17pm - 4 Comments

Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and former presidential candidate, starts out attacking the Washington Post and the New York Times, then he goes on a tear against “Liberal Washington.”

“Is government spending – excluding inflation – liberal or conservative if it doubles since 1980? — It’s liberal! We need change all right – change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington — throw out the big government liberals and elect John McCain!

I guess he read my cover story from a while back.

“And I have one more recommendation for energy conservation — let’s keep Al Gore’s private jet on the ground!”

**

“Did you hear any Democrats talk last week about the threat from radical, violent Jihad? Republicans believe that there is good and evil in the world. Ronald Reagan called-out the Evil Empire. George Bush labeled the terror-sponsor states the Axis of Evil. And at Saddleback, after Barak Obama dodged and ducked every direct question, John McCain hit the nail on the head: radical violent Islam is evil, and he will defeat it!”

(Loud chants of USA!! USA!!)

“President McCain and Vice President Palin will keep America as it has always been — the hope of the Earth!”

“Excluding inflation” How funny! What an absolutely naive interpretation.

Here is a stat, not adjusted for inflation:

    US Median wage in 1980 – $21,023
    US Median wage in 2006 – $58,407

So, if government spending has only doubled, then it has not kept pace with wages.

However, if you adjust for inflation, you notice that a 1980 dollar is worth about $2.40 today.

So, if spending has only doubled, it has not even kept pace with inflation.

So maybe government spending is the one area of the economy NOT affected by inflation?

Hmm.. with all those “USA USA” chants, I was half expecting Luiza’s title to be “I was watching the Republican Convention and the Olympics broke out.”

I haven’t been to a Canadian political convention in many years. Would anyone ever chant “Ca-na-da!” during a political speech? (or, Nyet, Nyet Soviet!)

The part about inflation was because a key plank of the GOP platform calls for getting rid of inflation numbers in government spending.

And no mention of the weirdness of an Ivy League-educated former governor of Massachusetts blasting East Coast elites? Did the cognitive dissonance make your head explode?
