The David Suzuki Foundation monitored the carbon footprints of the three of the main political parties this year. Measured in tons, they were:

NDP: 586.1
Conservatives: 514.4
Liberals: 503.4
Green Party: 2.5

Elizabeth May’s footprint was extremely small because she visited less than half the cities of the other three, and she traveled by train. The Conservatives and the Liberals managed to visit more cities than the NDP, but rack up less fewer tonnes of carbon (probably fewer planes and more buses and trains)

Here’s how it breaks down in terms of cities:

NDP: 64

Conservatives: 66

Liberals: 68

Green Party: 26

All the parties except the Conservatives purchased offset credits to compensate for their carbon footprint.

So the stories about the fuel guzzling Air Inuit Liberal plane were just wrong?

macphear: Over the next few months I’m sure we will find out that much of the other mud that was slung over the last 5 weeks (by all parties) was equally wrong…

Shouldn’t this affect the seat allotment?

At first glance, it looks like the NDP are the losers. However a more detailed report citing TOTAL carbon used, TOTAL offsets purchased might be more instructive.
Then we can get into the debate about whether the OFFSETs are valid…..
