Tale of the Tape: A "strange twist", indeed

It seems that Canadian Press resident Cadmanologist Tim Naumetz also got hold of the “leaked” report in question – no prize for guessing who seems to have leaked it, by the way.

Not surprisingly, he has a markedly different take than CTV News, the apparent beneficiary of said leak, and the followup story that appeared just hours later in the National Post that accepted, without question, the premise that the report cast doubt on the authenticity of the recording:

A sound expert the Liberal party hired to review a tape recording at the centre of the Chuck Cadman bribery allegation has submitted an inconclusive report.

But the expert confirms key segments involving Prime Minister Stephen Harper may be original.

The expert, Florida-based scientist Harry Hollien, says in a report the Conservatives leaked that he does not have enough evidence to confirm the authenticity of the recording.

The report hasn’t yet been filed in a $3.5-million defamation lawsuit Harper launched against the Liberals.

Hollien’s report says the first part of the recording where Harper says he was not aware of the “details” of a $1-million life insurance policy the Tories allegedly offered the late MP Cadman to help defeat the Liberals in 2005 does not appear to have been altered.
He could not tell from the tape and seven recorders he examined whether the recording was authentic or a copy.

Crucially, Hollien said there was no indication from his study of the tape that the first 48 seconds of the interview a B.C. author conducted with Harper after Cadman’s death in late 2005 had been changed. [...]

It’s one thing to be on the receiving end of an exclusive leak – although the fact that it’s unclear whether the report had, in fact, been filed before winding up in the hands of the media on the literal eve of the election may raise some rather pointed questions from the court about how it got there. Judges tend to frown on that sort of thing, as I understand. But did the National Post writers even bother read to the end of the CTV story, which – headline aside – made it clear that this expert did not conclude that the tape “had likely been altered”, contrary to what the Post story asserts?

In my daily life, I do a lot of media watching and analysis. I have to say that it seems that some of what’s happened at CTV this election would be grounds for a blogstorm if it were CBC. Duffy & May, Murphy & Dion, this… It’s more than a little offputting.

AS HARPER HAS MAINTAINED, MANY TIMES, “I DID NOT AUTHORIZE MY VENTRILOQUIST TO SPEAK TO TOM ZYTARUK ABOUT CHUCK CADMAN.” SURE, THE TAPE MIGHT BE AUTHENTIC, BUT, IF THE VENTRILOQUIST WAS NOT AUTHORIZED “ON THE MISSION,” HIZZONNER WILL HAVE TO “FIND” FOR HARPER. WHAT SAY YOU ANDREW? IS THERE A PRECEDENT THAT COULD BE ARGUED HERE?

WHAT ABOUT THE “STALL” ON THE LAST GREAT EMPEROR, BYRON OF MULDOON, KA-CHING, KA-CHING DYNASTY? THE WAY I SEE IT, CONFLICTING TESTIMONY [NOT THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SAINT LUC, HIS FORMER ATTORNEY] PLACES THE EMPEROR IN A BAD LIGHT. HE’D BETTER BE PREPARED TO “COUGH UP” $2.4 MILLION, PAYABLE TO THE CITIZENS OF CANADA.

One of the best things about Harper not winning a majority is that he won’t be able to keep ragging the puck on the scandals that haunt his government. In-and-Out, Mulroney, Cadscam, and so much more, all to be revealed in the months ahead. Woohooo!

I frequently buy the National Post; their cryptic crossword is superior to the one published by the Globe and Mail.

None of their reporting is cryptic, but it is comical. Here again the Post is superior; the Globe has a “Morning Smile”, but the Post has at least three pages of comedy, e.g., Editorials, Opinion and Letters to the Editor. Oh, and the Financial Post has Terence Corcoran, bwah, ha, ha.

As for CTV? U.S. wannabe… pathetic.

Reporter: Did you know that Cadman was offered a million dollar insurance policy?

Harper: I don’t know the details of the discussion. I know some people thought Cadman was worried about money, I told them I doubted that was the issue. The financial stuff was just related to the costs of an election.

    Further conversation deleted.

Kady: A-ha. Even though reimbursing election costs wouldn’t be a bribe anymore than paying someone a Cabinet Minister’s salary would be, clearly Harper bribed Chuck Cadman and has committed perjury to cover this up.

Frankly Kady – I saw the doctored version of this appearing early on other political blogs I visit.
Fortunately – so did others – who DID the comparison you did – story to facts and source – and egg became liberally spread on some faces!
Yup – I’m sure a judge would like to take a poke at this – as long as his name isn’t Gomery!

CTV still has a long way to go to out-Conservative the Conservative National Post. But the effort they have put in this election is well noted!

I wish CTV all the luck down the Conservative road. It has worked great for the Post.

    Any buyers yet?

It is a sad state when a media outlet attempts to influence the results of a federal election. Where does the population go to get factual information. How can we become informed to the reality if all we get is skewed biased twisted information.
