What happens next?

Beats me – but I have a feeling that I’m going to need a nap first. I love you, democracy, but you can really wear a girl out.  Anyway, as I’m sure will come as no surprise, posting will be light-ish over the next day or so.  Feel free to use this as an openish thread – and I’ll be back soon, I promise — not tanned, most likely, but definitely rested and ready to go. Hold onto your seats this fall, kids – it’s going to be a bumpy – by which, of course, I mean fabulous – ride.

(Fear not – if anything earthshattering breaks, I’m sure I won’t be able to stay away.)

An blog entry at rabble’s election blogby Vicky Smallman “Not what I’d call a breakthrough” says female representation is up a “whopping 1%.”

Provides the number of female MPs elected or leading (as of 3:30 am) at 68 with conservatives up 9 to 23, the NDP at 12, the Liberals down 3 to 18, adn the bloc down to 15. Don’t knwo if that held or not.

So to change the topic ever so slightly – out in BC, Newsworld started showing election results a half hour (6:30 PST) before the polls closed and continued for about 20 minutes (the feed was cut as Elizabeth May said “we’re broadcasting right across the country, except where the results are still blacked out…”).

Is this going to be a case of forgive and forget, or is the CBC in line for a slap on the wrist from EC?

  • Pete

“Is this going to be a case of forgive and forget, or is the CBC in line for a slap on the wrist from EC?”

The Supreme Court was stupid and wrong to uphold this law. In an age where anyone can transmit info across the world, it no longer makes sense.

An effective staggering of poll closings was the best solution, and they bungled it by closing the Newfie ones too early. It’s EC’s fault, and an honest mistake on CBC’s part.

“An effective staggering of poll closings was the best solution, and they bungled it by closing the Newfie ones too early. It’s EC’s fault, and an honest mistake on CBC’s part.”

Wouldn’t it be better to hold off counting the ballots until whenever BC polls close? Perhaps a combination of the two such that Atlantic polls open and close a little later and BC polls open and close a little earlier, but Atlantic Canada (and the rest of us) still holds off counting until BC has had their chance to vote?

Pollsters don’t do a good job of calling seats. it’s very expensive to do an accuarate poll of a single riding much less a hundred or so. I stick to my theory that voters only elect a minortity government when thats exactly what they want. In theory this campaign may not have been money well spent. However parliment wasn’t functional. If this swift kick in the ego for every leader doesn’t help then I’ll be very suprised. Dion was a weak leader and now he’s out for sure. Harper was focused on the next election and now he has some perspective. Layton and Duceppe were off the hook but no longer. Same for all those commitees. How’s that for the change we needed.

  • Mike Horn

A slightly paranoid warning to all the recent candidates. Now is the time to dot your i’s cross your t’s and watch your backs. Complete the remaining paperwork and make sure that your political machinery doesn’t collape around you, or on top of you.

  • bob ward

Has anyone seen Mr. Dion today??

Jack and Steve met the press….where is Dion??

Does he have a hidden agenda??

    just askin

  • Steph C

Dion was supposed to have his news conference at 2 p.m. Maybe he’s napping with Kady?

Speaking of committee groupies, the “Point of Order” triplets are back: Goodyear, Poilievre and (yes, oh yes) Tilson. Fear not, however, as Paul “That’s not a Point of Order, That’s Debate” Szabo is back after squeaking past Hugh (insert nasty nickname) Arrison. Hurray for the Szaint!

Gee, I wonder if the Ethics Committee will agree to resume the In & Out study. Hmmmm….

  • bob ward

Maybe Dion wants to stay in a bubble and will continue to hide from the press.

I think the leader of her majesty’s loyal opposition should stand up and answer questions from the press.

I would like to ask him (or have Kady ask for me).
Mr. Dion if you were a loser, what kinda loser would you be??

    over to you

  • Andrew

bob, I think it’s probably OK for Dion to take a day off. And to say he’s hiding from the press is absurd. The leader and party with a pattern for evading the press is currently forming government. What about that 5 point plan that’s panic and desperation?

  • Andrew

boby, you’re getting dangerously close to slander.

  • cwe

    l-o-v-e s his wife?

  • bob ward

    Andrew
What are you thinkin??…..cwe got it

P.S. I noticed you chose not to comment on
Mr. Dion’s er….well….lack of decorum last night??

What do you think of Mr. Dion havin the press pushed around??

  • john g

    bob wards disgusting comments aside…

I do agree that after watching Lloyd Robertson describe Dion as a class act and a man of integrity mere seconds after he sicced the RCMP on Tom Clark, I never again want to hear the media complain about how Harper uses the RCMP to keep reporters away.

  • Andrew

bobby: like how CPC staffers ordered RCMP to assault a female reporter trying to interview Donna Cadman?

  • JK

    I love elections.

  • JK

    Bob says

“What do you think of Mr. Dion havin the press pushed around??”

Please, Roger Smith should have got an Oscar for that performance.

I think Smith is a “Harper Hater”, but that episode was just lame.

PS:Just to add, if that was Harper you would not see Mr.Smith so kind after..

  • Wayne

I am with you JK – I love elections canadian ones anyways the americans are boring they don’t have quite the bloodlust we do up here … that’s why keep ours to around 30 days. Speaking of that why are people so upset about 300 million per for our elections what does that work out around $ 9.00 per person hey what the hell the price of democracy isn’t that steep.

  • Jenn

Okay, what the hell happened? One day after the election and I suddenly got out of the loop.

What 6 point plan? What did Dion do to Tom Clark?

  • http://carnewsandviews.com jwl

    Jenn

At press conference today, Harper talked about six point plan to fix economy. I got the points from Kathleen Harris article:

    Harper’s six-point economic plan:

    - take steps to ensure Canada’s financial system is not put at a competitive disadvantage

    - discuss the global financial crisis and strengthening the Canada-EU economic partnership at a Canada-European Union Summit this Friday

    - summon Parliament to meet this fall and table an economic and fiscal update before the end of November

    - participate in the G20 finance ministers’ meeting and call for a further meeting of G7 finance minister to build on progress made at their last meeting

    - keeping government spending focused and under control by continuing with the four-year strategic review of departmental expenditures

    - convening a first ministers meeting on the economy to discuss with premiers and territorial leaders a joing approach to the global financial crisis

“Stephane Dion couldn’t hide his contempt for the CTV television network following his resounding election defeat Tuesday night.

The Liberal leader was making his way to the podium at his campaign headquarters in Montreal when he was approached by a CTV camera crew. A frustrated Dion snapped at the reporter, telling him CTV is the last media outlet he would speak to.

“The last one I want to speak first (to) is CTV – you understand that?” he said angrily.

Last week, Dion botched a pre-recorded, English-language interview with a Halifax CTV affiliate. ” Canadian Press, Oct 15 2008

  • Blues Clair

that six point plan sounds awfully familiar…

comment by bob ward on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 11:10 am:Classy Guy I hope we can all agree Mr. Harper whether you agree with his policies or not is a CLASSY GUY!!

    —————–
CALGARY — Newly-re-elected Prime Minister Stephen Harper today served notice that he will stack the Senate with Tory appointments if necessary to push through democratic reforms of the chamber.

Class act if he does not get the crowbar hotel for “Cadman Affair or ‘In & out ” maybe a Constitutional foul up will ?

  • Andrew

“- take steps to ensure Canada’s financial system is not put at a competitive disadvantage”

Code for heap money on the banks. ‘Everyone else is doing it!’

“- discuss the global financial crisis and strengthening the Canada-EU economic partnership at a Canada-European Union Summit this Friday”

Plan to make plans? Tsk tsk.

“- summon Parliament to meet this fall and table an economic and fiscal update before the end of November”

Ah. Steve is gonna allow Parliament to convene. This isn’t something that ‘any new government would do’.

“- participate in the G20 finance ministers’ meeting and call for a further meeting of G7 finance minister to build on progress made at their last meeting”

    Participation ribbon?

“- keeping government spending focused and under control by continuing with the four-year strategic review of departmental expenditures”

Code: absolutely meaningless. Spending will continue to rise 6-8% per year.

“- convening a first ministers meeting on the economy to discuss with premiers and territorial leaders a joing approach to the global financial crisis”

Harper’s first First Ministers meeting (other than the chat over dinner). Too bad it had to wait until his second mandate. Who else was described as panicking for suggesting this?

So, who wants to bet ‘convening Parliament’ was added just so there would a number other than 5 points?

  • Blues Clair

    the sixth point

    was a

    Masterstroke.
