In a surprising move — and one that I find truly gratifying coming, as it does, two years after hardcover publication and a year after the paperback appeared — the Rideau St. Chapters in Ottawa is stocking 23 (paperback) copies of this classic:

They were waiting for a second Harper victory to confirm your thesis?

  • Riley

It is a great book! Well written and full of insight. I was flipping through it the other day actually and wondered, “gee, was this past election book-worthy?”

I mean, honestly… this past one had defining aspects to it like a broke Liberal party, a huge financial crisis, and collapse of tory popularity in Quebec… but for the life of me I don’t find any of those things interesting.

Does anyone think this last election was book worthy?

  • Paul Wells

If they do, they are being very, very quiet about it, Riley.

I would want my next book to take a longer view, anyway. Otherwise some people are going to start showing me up:

I find it humorous that the most correlated book with your sales is “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. Jean Chretien’s book comes in second.

  • Lord Bob

You know, that’s actually a pretty good price for 344 pages of Wellsian insight.

And the Victoria Chapters has a couple of copies in stock.

And I work two blocks from the Victoria Chapters.

Get ready to receive one more cheque for eleven cents or whatever it is you get, Paul…

  • Paul Wells

    Three bucks! Woot!

  • Karen

If you want to send me one for free I’ll read it.

Should we wait for the January sales?

  • Paul Wells

Frankly I’m astonished it’s still on the bookshelves. I had hoped it would have staying power, but election books are notoriously short-lived. They’ve only now begun remaindering the hardcover; the paperback is still selling steady…

  • harporamma

Let’s cut out the middle man, send me your book Paul and I’ll send you $5 … actually I’d pay much more (and did!). I picked it up when it first came out and truely enjoyed it, I even took an afternoon off work (unofficially) to finish reading it, couldn’t put it down. Still see some copies floating around the bookstores of the Maritimes as well …

If the Globe is right in its reporting about the team assembling around Dominic Leblanc, then I hope someone buys him a copy of this book for Christmas.

I’m holding my breathe for the audio book to come out. And not because I don’t want to read it – I’d probably read it again – but because I’m looking forward to learning who will be the one recording it!

“Right Side Up, as read by Bill Blaikie”. Such a warm comforting voice, you’d just feel so safe listening to him read it to you. Paul Szabo? You could record Pat Martin outrage it to you, perhaps interpret it through a puppet in a live reading? Garth Turner blog it to you? John Baird sock it to you? Perhaps have the audio book with “As read by Stephen Harper” advertised, and then its actually Peter Van Loan reading it. (is that joke just not timely anymore?) Any other ideas?

I like the cover. Harper looks like a South Korean soldier standing behind a UN building at the DMZ. He seems very cautious.

Sorry Paul, you won’t get your $3 from me, poor student that I am, as I read it on loan from the Killam Library at Dal in preparation for the most recent election. You’ll be pleased to know that, judging by the date stamps, it’s been in heavy circulation.

  • Paul Wells

    Actually, that is quite pleasing.

  • Sophie

Sorry, Paul, I’m cheap.. and a student… but an attempt to check it out form the library found me on a waiting list. You ought to be proud.

  • Riley

    Paul,

Are you planning on writing a longer-term book on Harper? You could be to Harper what Bob Woodward is to Bush.

I don’t know what your overall book-sales were, but there is certainly an appetite amongst nerdy politico’s in Canada for fair-minded analysis and clever prose regarding our political leaders in Canada and the overall party strategies.

I think we’re all tired of the self-congratulating styles of “memoirs”. Even though I liked Jean Chretien’s, I thought it was pretty rich that he wrote about his big “no” to Iraq but did not mention his “yes” to Kosovo bombing campaign.

Anyway, a longer view of Harper’s time in government would be much appreciated.

Already have it, great book, very insightful. Do you have a similar follow-up?

  • Lord Bob

The guys at the Victoria Chapters’ couldn’t actually find either of their copies when I showed up on my lunch break. So that’s three bucks down the drain, Paul; I suggest a lawsuit.

  • JVSCant

I own it (yay, hardcover), I enjoyed it, I recommend it. Still didn’t care for the clunky Nelly Furtado joke — too far a walk for too little payoff, sir! — but dang, the pages flew by, and I spent the next week or two dipping back in here and there. It was great hearing your authorial voice in such extended form.

Everyone who has fun here for free (and has a few bucks in their pocket) should pick it up.

  • Lord Bob

Interesting thought: not only do I not yet have Right Side Up, I haven’t bought a paper copy of Maclean’s since before anybody whose blogs I frequent wrote for it.

So thanks for the free stuff, guys!

Bought it when it first came out — enjoyed it much.

    Mr. Wells,

I read your book this summer by the pool, and other than wanting to put on cement shoes and going for a dip as a Liberal, it truly was a great read. Thank you for many afternoons of political junkie heaven. I have recommended your book to many people.

Will you be writing a sequel ? How about – Right Again Canada, or Millions of Taxpayers’ Dollars to get it Right (again).

Hat’s off. Well done, as we know that “hard work always pays off”, after a long struggle with sincere effort it’s done.
