This from Reuters: an environmental activist is suing the world’s leaders for $1 billion for failing to prevent global warming. Activist and blogger Dan Bloom is launching a class action lawsuit at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for for “intent to commit manslaughter against future generations of human beings by allowing murderous amounts of fossil fuels to be harvested, burned and sent into the atmosphere as CO2.″He intends to lodge the lawsuit in the week starting Sunday, Dec. 6.

Since the ICC will likely not take the case, the case is probably more a publicity stunt than anything else.

Question: is this case more or less ridiculous than the woman who sued McDonalds because her coffee was too hot?

Well if this doesn’t work…….Maybe we can call them “Crimes against Humanity”

Bloom’s case is more ridiculous because at least someone was injured in coffee case. But I agree that both cases could be placed in Top 10 of ridiculous lawsuits.

People dying of malnutrition/thirst from droughts, heat strokes, higher intensity hurricane damages, wars/conflicts that are hugely exacberbated by environmental degradation….when the world clearly knows the effects….is actually a pretty clear case.

My apologies Dan Bloom. You caught me in a foul mood, with all that killing of democracy going on in Ottawa……

Werner, apologies accepted. No problemo. Yes, i have been reading about those ottowa shenanigans…..sad day in Canada!

Kyle Baily, he’s not suing the governments for environmental degradation, he’s suing them specifically for not reducing CO2. That would be two different things.

Raging ranter, we could ADD that into the soup, too.

Raging Ranter, the causal link between environmental degradation and climate change is, if anything, probably more certain than whether climate change is anthropogenic.
Anyone who knows a little evolutionary history knows that the chief driver of massive changes in the biospere is which components of the lithosphere exist in the atmosphere.
IPCC Working group II, which deals with impacts of climate change is a good source for this.
There are many reasons why the ICC will reject this ( I think?), but it won’t be because there is doubt that climate change causes environmental damage which causes human death.
I imagine it will be rejected because the judges won’t have the balls to set a precedent that the world’s current leaders have a legal obligation to govern in the interests of future citizens.

Well said, Kyle Baily! Hear Hear!
