It has declined steeply since Conrad black sold it. There are only a few decent writers left, the others are rather wet tories at best.

One big difference between Brown and Obama is that Brown was Chancellor of the Exchequer for the past decade and he oversaw a lot of the policies that led to boom times while Blair was PM but have now turned to dust. Brown claimed on numerous occasions to have solved the boom/bust cycle and said only good times were going to occur from now on and also claimed to have solved the crisis with bank bailout a few months ago but it turns out banks are in worse shape than ever. So Brown pretty much has no creditability left with UK electorate.

Obama is not associated with government, or Wall St., decisions of the past decade so he can still ignite the national confidence. We'll see if Obama still has same spellbinding abilities after he's been around governing for a few years.
