“Fewer than 10 per cent of Hollywood films are written by women, and fewer than six per cent directed by women,” says a movie marketing consultant in a piece in the Times of London, which concludes that the genre may eat itself without any help from feminist producers or activist audiences. “If the glut of such films continues there’s a very real danger that the genre will implode” into a squealing, pratfalling, neurotic, weight-obsessed, wedding-obsessed, man-obsessed mess.     Why are chick flicks so lame? Because the majority of them are based on the mindless twaddle that populates the chick-lit section in bookstores. Which happens to be immensely popular.
