Breaking News: It's back! Ethics committee to resume investigation into In and Out

by kadyomalley on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 5:32pm - 24 Comments

As passed by the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics earlier today (full liveblog available here):

“That the Committee resume the study it began during the Second Session of the Thirty-Ninth Parliament regarding the Conservative Party’s election campaign expenses during the 2005-2006 election campaign; that it deem the hearings held during that Parliament to have been held during the Second Session of the Fortieth Parliament; that the Committee issue btices to appear of all witnesses who did not appear during the study; and that it report its conclusions and recommendations to the House of Commons.”

Quark reference in the tags? You’ve outdone yourself, Kady.

Of course its not enough that the issue is before the courts the oppostion parties feel that there is political capital to be gained and so they want to waste their time looking at something they have no expertise to analyze. Talk about a waste of time and taxpayer money. Legislation should be passed barring committees of the House of Commons from studying issues that are before the courts.

Yes dont get in the way of our gov’t and its printing 10-percenters and filing in the focus groups. Hey, its almost March, isn’t it proroguing time soon?

      • hollinm

What in the h.ll does this have to do with the subject matter.

If all you can worry about is 10% ers and so called focus groups the government must be doing a mighty fine job. You need to get a life and put some meaningfully commentary in your postings.

        • TOLiberal

And you need to stop posting canned responses to every single blog post. A little bit of originality please conbots!

          • hollinm

I don’t know who you think I am but I am a concerned citizen who is entitled to his opinion whether you like them or not. The fact is nobody gives me responses. Because you don’t like the rebuttals/comments you try to diminish them in some way.

Really, what were the charges and who was charged?

    • hollinm

That’s what court cases are all about.

First of all we have to find out if there was any wrongdoing. Obviously you believe the Conservative party is guilty before all the facts have been determined. Just because the Liberals or Elections Canada say there was wrong doing EC has to prove their case. The best place for that is through an independent non partisan adjudication of the issues.

Do you honestly believe that a committee of the House of Commons has the experience to independently investigate this issue and at the same time leave partisan considerations aside? Not likely with the left wing loons occupying the opposition benches these days.

      • TobyornotToby

Some of us honeslty believe that saying something is “before the courts” is a strategy used by this government to evade accountability, as in sue the Liberal Party instead of explaining what the prime minister was referring to on the Zytaruk tape.

        • hollinm

Come on get real! What do you honestly think is going to happen when the committee convenes and starts “examining” the issue again? A bunch of yelling and screaming. A bunch of nonsense which does nothing to get to the bottom of the case.

The fact is whether you like it or not the court system is there to ensure the evidence is presented in a fair and balanced way with any conclusions based on fact…not innuendo, guessing or smears.

As for the Zytaruk tape if the Liberals were so sure of their position why not sue the government for launching a frivilous law suit. Legal costs were not even awarded to the Liberal party. So get off with the high and mighty attitude.

You should be worried about the unelected leader of the Liberal party who is a carpetbagger full of arrogance and condescension. That is not going to go over well with seriously ordinary Canadians.

      • motor

So your saying it’s not before the courts.

Compare that to your first statement, “…..the issue is before the courts…”

Let me know when you make up your mind, “K”.

        • hollinm

I thought the original posting was about the in and out system. That is b4 the courts. The Cadman issue is done. The police say there is nothing to investigate and the Liberals agreed to the dismissal of the lawsuit and do not appear to be pursuing it any further.

So despite the attempts to smear the Conservative party on the Cadman affair it has failed miserably. |t is a dead issue.

My comments related to the attempt by the ethics committee to do their own investigation. It is that issue that is b4 the courts and is best left their were evidence, facts and a decision can be rendered. Are you afraid to let the courts decide? The committee is simply a witchhunt. Canadians don’t seem to be too excited about it. Otherwise the Liberals would have never received their worst beating in a very long time in the last election.

Think about it. In the last parliament the Liberals talked day after day about faux scandals and not one stuck to the government or the PM. Perhaps the Liberal party would be better off putting forward policies that could be debated. Not everyone is a crook like they are and steal taxpayers money.

“Obviously you believe the Conservative party is guilty before all the facts have been determined. Just because the Liberals or Elections Canada say there was wrong doing EC has to prove their case.”
        ——————————————————-
You deduced that out of: ” Really, what were the charges and who was charged?”

        Your amazing.

        • hollinm

For the life of me I don’t get your point.

There is no criminal wrongdoing that has been determined. It is a violation of the elections act that is being investigated. If criminality is proven at some point that is another issue. We are talking about election expenses that have been denied and never paid. The Conservative party thinks it operated within the elections act and Elections Canada disagrees. The Conservative party believes they are right and have put their money where their mouths are and are suing EC. That’s it…nothing more…nothing less.

So you can quit with the criminality issue. You are blowing smoke and barking up the wrong tree in your partisan desire to find criminal wrongdoing.

Just the same-old tiresome antics from the opposition parties.

I ageee. Ban them i say. C’mon, let’s get on with the business of running this place!

      • Lord Kitchener’s Own

I agree with kc. Let’s ban the opposition parties.

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times…

        DEMOCRACY JUST DOESN’T WORK.

        • http://macleans.ca kc

Well it would work if the opposition didn’t keep on opposing all the time. Don’t they realise we sent them to Ottawa to sit, watch, listen and learn. If things carry on like this for much longer i shall refuse to vote for anyone in the opposition anymore. That’ll learn em!

      • sf

They are not opposing the government’s policies. They are opposing the existence of the government. Which is why it is so tiresome – they lost the election, now let’s move on.
