Adam Lambert can’t win? Come on.

Claiming a male singer who wears eyeliner isn’t ‘American Idol’ material is misguided

Adam Lambert can’t win? Come on.Appearing on American Idol recently, Miley Cyrus, the reigning princess of Middle America, met Adam Lambert, the gothy favourite to win this year’s contest. “Adam said I looked gorgeous, which was nice,” Cyrus later told Ryan Seacrest on the Idol host’s radio show. Asked about the potential for romance, Cyrus was less enthusiastic. “He’s not my type,” she reportedly said. “He wears eyeliner.”

Perhaps Cyrus was trying to be polite. For sure, there are greater obstacles to any potential coupling. For one, Lambert, 27, is 10 years Cyrus’s senior. For another, Cyrus is a girl. And Lambert is quite possibly gay.

Aside from affecting his romantic options, Lambert’s sexuality wouldn’t seem to be much of a limitation, at least so far as his career is concerned. Numerous gay musicians have won popular and critical acclaim; pop music and gay culture have often intersected. But his presence on Idol has prompted an altogether remarkable question, one posed by no less than the New York Times recently: can a gay contestant win?

Asking the question reveals certain assumptions about Idol. That it is the exclusive domain of conservative Middle America. That the typical viewer is a 12-year-old girl or 52-year-old mother who goes to church and voted for Bush. That, to put it bluntly, only rednecks watch Idol and rednecks don’t like gay people, so a gay person can’t win. There may be some truth to this. Though it fails to explain why the teenage girls in Idol’s live audience each week scream at the sight of Lambert’s made-up eyes. For the record, he has not clarified his sexuality, and most of the evidence for the claim—the falsetto, the musical theatre background, the fondness for Cher—has been anecdotal at best. Except, perhaps, for the leaked photos that show him with his tongue in another man’s mouth.

When Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly did a segment on Lambert, the photos were cropped to spare his viewers the sight of two male tongues touching. Overt sexuality—gay, straight or otherwise—is not something Fox’s Idol typically encourages. Previous gay contestants have admitted their sexuality only after leaving the show. As Katherine Meizel, an American academic who has written extensively about the politics of Idol, says, “It’s probably the one identity marker that isn’t packaged explicitly on the screen.” Season seven contestant David Hernandez was voted off shortly after his history as a male stripper was revealed on the Internet, and he recently linked his dismissal to his gayness. “That’s Middle America for you,” he surmised.

Beware the simple explanation, though. The week of his dismissal, Hernandez’s performance was deemed “overdone” and “verging on desperate.” And, though generally a bit cheesy, Idol is not to be confused with the entertainment portion of a Republican convention. Last season’s finale included an appearance by George Michael. Two years ago, the Bush-bashing punk band Green Day played the finale. The first theme week this season was dedicated to the music of Michael Jackson. “The producers I think are really, really smart,” says Meizel. “And they’re really aware of the diversity of American values.”

The voting public has proved similarly apolitical. Season three’s winner, Fantasia Barrino, was a single black mother. In season five, a grey-haired 29-year-old soul singer (Taylor Hicks) beat a leggy, black-haired Barbie (Katherine McPhee). In seven seasons, four winners have been white, two black and one of mixed race—as Meizel points out, America elected a biracial Idol before it elected a biracial president. Only one winner—Carrie Underwood in season four—has vaguely resembled the typical pop tart. With a few debatable exceptions, the most compelling contestants have fared best. And Lambert is perhaps the most intriguing talent in the show’s run: a strutting, sexually ambiguous heartthrob with pouty lips and glam rock bombast. His Middle Eastern-influenced rendition of Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire was weirdly epic and erotic. He performed Jackson’s worst hit, Black or White, without seeming completely ridiculous—all while vaguely resembling a vampire from Twilight.

In other words, he is a walking manifestation of pop music and, consequently, America. And should he win, should he prove at least as American as Miley Cyrus and Bill O’Reilly, the central question of his candidacy will be promptly turned around. If a gay contestant can win, have we vastly misunderstood Middle America?

I loathe people like you who write about Adam Lambert purely so that people who are interested in him will read your bleak attempt at journalism. Comments about Adam’s sexuality have nothing to do with this singing contest. Unfortunately for those like you, with your transparent agenda to attempt the diminish this young man, who will be the icon of his generation, you are merely motivating Adam’s fan base to not only have him win, but to do so in a record breaking and historic way.

    • http://www.savedarfur.org Sophia Geffros

I think you misread the article- it said that there was no reason to think that a gay contestant couldn’t win.
I will draw your attention, if I may, to the title- “Adam Lambert Can’t Win? Come on.”

      • sf

No, I think he did read the article. His sexuality should be off-limits.

Why on earth would someone feel the need to talk about the sexuality of someone involved in a singing contest?

    • beth

I’m soooooooooooo with you on this, if hes gay hes gay,,Nobody knows this he is very cute, alot of rockers wear make up so are they all gay… it doesn’t have anything to do with his singing at all, he is an awsome singer that will go very far. i think he is the best singer of then all, he does great every week, and he should have not been in the bottom three at all.

  • Wayne

Quite frankly his choice of sexuality is irrelevant (or at least should be) and there is only one thing that counts and that is that he is without a doubt one of the most extraordinary talents to come along in quite some time. I am a frustrated musician who opted out of the business to make money a long time ago. I have been a roadie for rock bands, managed a few bands many years ago and played guitar for a few bands for a very short time (acoustic fingerstyle blues) … and I can state here and for the record that this guy is definitely in a class of his own. His version of ‘ Ring Of Fire ‘ left me completely speechless a sort of jeff buckley thing going on with drama – his ability to draw you in and deliver the goods is outstanding and of a caliber rare nowadays. I can’t wait ot see what he does next every time he performs it is completely different and well worth the wait. To be honest he is too good for American Idol but an artist needs the exposure to the unruly masses and I for one hope he wins as that way he will get access to a good producer and studio because i will line up to buy this dudes CD no doubt. I think the best part I like about him is that he has this gimmick that he uses but only up to a point. and then doesn’t overuse as few people can quick change to the high reigister in voice like he can and stay there with power – they key is not to over use this just tease it out once in awhile to relieve the tension at the turnaround (music stuff) as it were.

    • Lisa 2

Wayne, you hit the nail on the head. Sexual preference has no bearing on Adam’s pure gift and ability to move the masses with his talent. Every week he has moved this contest to a new level. Even the other contestants were stunned by his showing in the bottom 3 last week, it was clear on their faces. He surpasses any of the idols this season and in season’s past in terms of creativity and delivery. Maybe he understands his art or his feelings better, but he definitely controls every aspect of his performance. He’s well on his way to a tremendous career and whichever agent scoops up this incredible talent will reap the rewards. Best of luck to Adam!!

I have never in my 40 years on this planet met ANY group of people MORE obsessed with Gay Sex than the Heterosexual.

Isn’t it time for Heteroseuxals to get over themselves and realize that THE VERY GAY AND LESBIAN PEOPLE THAT HETEROSEXUALS CREATED are every bit as viable and valuable to socitey as the Heterosexuals who abuse, degrade, humiliate, and denegrate us at any given opportunity????

Here’s a BETTER question for your next article:

Why are Heterosexuals MANIACALLY obsessed with Homosexuality?

    • Lisa

I LOVED your comment. Every single word of it is true.

I am a straight woman. At the same time, fantasies about homosexuality are a complete turn on to me. Why is that? I think it’s because deep down, we are all a bit bi-sexual. Who knows. Who cares. I don’t really feel that it is something that anyone needs to get all worked up about……

And by the way, what Adam or anyone else does with their crotch, has absolutely nothing to do with their singing ability. He is the real deal. Deal with that Middle America…….

      • Sandy

Adam is the best talent AI has ever had. I am straight but not prejudiced to race or sexual preference, but I have to adamantly disagree with Lisa’s statement that “deep down, we are all abit bi-sexual.”. That is the most ridiculous statement I’ve ever read!! Lisa, you are NOT a straight woman!! You are a bi-sexual woman that apparently has never acted on it. I could NEVER be or want to be with a woman in any way shape or form. Not even to kiss a woman, except maybe a quick peck on the lips! And that’s because I am turned on by men & the thought of anything sexual with a woman I find gross & a turn-off. With that said, I don’t mean I’m turned off by gays. Each person has the right to be happy & to be with what turns them on. So Lisa, no, not EVERYBODY deep down is bisexual. I think you need to get with a woman & work it out babe, cos you’re not heteresexual to make a statement like that. You probly have fantasies of women, which, to each their own, just don’t speak for 100% straight people cos we don’t harbor any feelings of wanting to be with our own.

        • Sean Stokholm

That you felt compelled to write a lengthy and visceral rebuttal to Lisa could be of interest to those of a Freudian bent. Then again, sometimes a blog rant is just a blog rant. :)

Yada, yada, yada…whatever. If he sings good, who cares what he does in his personal time. The big question is, can the rednecks who watch idol get over it.

          • sf

            Shaun C:
Wow, aren’t you hilarious, while claiming sexuality does not matter, you use the ethnic slur “rednecks”. Aren’t you a bigot.

  • For The Love Of ADAM

    Please pass this around.
ATTENTION: To All WORLD WIDE FANS Of ADAM!!! . . .We can VOTE!!! I read this post from Time: “I’m living in Peru and I figured out how to vote with an international telefonecard. Start asking around how you can make foncalls to USA. I’m technically not that talented, but I voted full 2 hours last week. My friend in USA just sent me a message when I could start voting and which telefonumber and it worked out great! I placed like 150 votes for Adam on 2 telefonlines! THAT may never ever happen again that an exceptional talented singer like ADAM finishes in the bottom 2. (even if I still think somebody is messing with us…) greetings from Lima. . .
I thank Labelle for this information. Please go out and buy those phone cards and tell your friends. But you need someone from US to text you when voting starts and the number of Adam. I’m relieved that as a fan from Hong Kong, I will be able to do something for the LOVE of ADAM!!!

    • Aaron

Its an American contest, for American voters.

      • Brian

Aaron, that’s absolutely rubbish. The show is aired around the world, so anyone can vote. Get a life.

        • Jeff

I live in New Zealand and see the show two weeks later than the US plus visit Australia a bit and they are one week behind. Take into account the different time zones around the world and I would say, yes it is basically Americans vote. I guess you could throw Canada, Mexico and some South America in the mix, hum, North America and South America, yep American Idol.

By the way, Adam is the most talented all around contestant AI has ever had!!

          • sophiexoxo

            yess thank u :)

  • Una, 25

Great article but but just for the record: Adam is not a closet gay, lol. “I am who I am, I have nothing to hide.” & on kissing his Wicked co-star, “Although women are not necessarily my preference….”

If people are really that naive to not get the very, very blatant hints (there are dozens and dozens more), that’s hilarious but their problem. His personal life is exactly that. Just like a heterosexual man is not going to say, “look at me world I’m straight!”, why do people expect a homosexual to? As Adam said, “This is a singing contest, not a kissing contest.”

  • http://MSN Darling

Your article was incredibly insulting to older women who go to church and voted for Bush. I’m 49, attend church regularly (am a Christian) and voted for Bush, both times. And I loooove Adam and am rooting for him to win American Idol! Your generalization is pretty narrow-minded and out-of-touch. Christians, middle America, mainstream or conservative America, whatever you want to call it; most of us are pretty balanced and fair people, and we can admire someone’s gift or love their personality without agreeing with their lifestyle. I would love to have Adam as a friend. It’s time the “lefters” let go of their stereotype, which only fits a few radical extreme right wing outspoken people; not the majority of us.

    • Firecracker59

“Darling” you could not have said it better and I could have written EVERY line in your comment.
Thanks for saying it all better than I could’ve.
WAKE UP WORLD…A true Christian doesn’t judge, we love and care!!!
I LOVE and SUPPORT ADAM for his TALENT & CHARISMA!!!

      • sophiexoxo

Darling your absolutely right. I am a Christian and although its sad he has chosen that lifestyle [all those good looks going to waste ;) ] i love him and his attitude and he has some amazing God-given talent. Optomistic side: He is surrounded by Christians in Idol (Danny, Kris, staff) Hes been put there with them for a reason! pretty cool to think about

        • Ben

*sigh* When will you people get that being gay is NOT a choice?

      • bootnine

I agree, i love Adam for his gifted talent. I don't agree with his lifestyle, and I will not judge him for it, but the word of God will. God is the one who will judge us in the end on what we did on this earth. I will continue to support Adam for his unique talent and wish him long term success.

  • Ally Coyote

Great article, I really enjoyed it. I think you are a very good, unbiased writer with some interesting and well-founded descriptive sentences. I especially liked this;” His Middle Eastern-influenced rendition of Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire was weirdly epic and erotic. He performed Jackson’s worst hit, Black or White, without seeming completely ridiculous—all while vaguely resembling a vampire from Twilight.”

For the record i would like to see Bill Oreilly and Miley Cyrus chopped up and fed to some sharks, who deserve life more than they do. Then maybe they would have some value to the planet. They are both brainless, soulless, moronic imbeciles with way too much influence on the public. Now THAT is a show I would pay to see! As long as there were marine vets on hand to care for the sharks indigestion…

    • red hair

WHO CARES…Black, white, gay, hetero… this young man has talent and he is gifted. How refreshing to watch someone different who gets your attention every time he sings. He is unique and we should all be proud of him. I would rather watch him on TV than watching a man killing 15 students…It tis time to put our efforts where it is needed…

    • Aaron

You like the “unbiased’ article, yet your second paragraph show you to be the most biased person on this post. ?

      • Bob

Sounds like a certain little boy doesn’t like Adam… we don’t care what you think Aaron.

I am a Christian, and I like Adam. I think he is very talented. This is a pop music competition, not a gospel fest. Adam is well suited for pop music. He does a good job.

  • lepiki

I’m not sure if he will win…but Adam Lambert deserves to win, he is the only one we will not be forgotten a month from now.

  • Rndmacts

I’m not sure of this article, the question of Adam’s sexuality which to me is totally unimportant, but lets be accurate. He doesn’t deny being gay, its AI that is pushing this aspect, but after every performance when they show family and friends, the young man standing next to Adam’s father is also the same young man that is in the imfamous photo, in otherwords his partner for the last three years I believe. If he was on Canadian Idol this would so not even be a consideration, every season we had the sexually ambiguous or overt and that was never the consideration, we were more interested in the talent. And for those that don’t know, if he does not win and have Quincy Jones represent him, them BMI, Simon Cowell’s company have already laid claim.to him, so he will be recording. But he should win, because each week he demonstrates how he knows his own voice, and each week he takes the song and makes it his own. I was asounded the week that Smokey Robinson was the mentor and actually said that he liked Adams rendition of his song over his own. Can’t get any more powerful endorsement than that, the original artist prefers your version. The one performance that had me in goose bumps was “Mad World”, it was his take on the song and it was mesmorizing. If he doesn’t win then there is something seriously wrong down below because this kind of talent is very rare and maybe comes once in a generation.

    • cityoperavancouver

Actually, you’re not correct. The “young man” to whom you refer is Adam’s brother. He appears to come from a very close family. In any case, no one cares about Adam’s sexuality. It’s his business, and none of ours.

And if anyone doubts Adam’s amazing range, please try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJYyqzUr6jU

Then, take a breath. It would seem Adam can do, well, anything.

  • Sue

wow…what is the deal with everyone worrying about Adams sexual preference? Get over yourselves people! the guy is pure talent! I am a middle aged mom of 2 girls..all three of us thing Adam is absolutely adorable..then best talent Idol has ever seen..and none of us care who he’d rather date!! thats his choice..and nobody’s business to comment on..im appalled at the writer of this article..who are you to speculate..look a bit further..there are pics of Adam kissing girls too OH MY…the nerve of him ! sheesh…amazing that people dont jump all over guessing if a female contestant is gay..but the minute a male contestand does well..he’s gay or people try to figure him to be. Who cares what he is, I just can’t wait to support him by buying his cd and would love to go see him perform! Keep it up Adam..those of us in Canada love ya too!

  • Sue

I just realized…this person writes for Macleans????????? I never would have figured Macleans magazine for being so narrow minded!!!!!!!

  • Lamont Doodlenicker

You are all a bunch of Schweebs.

  • Disco Queen

So who cares if he’s gay? I watch American Idol to hear them sing? I think it’s terrible that their personal life should be exposed. Adam is a great singer/performer and should win the contest on his singing ability.
I watch Adam perform and have said to my family…this kid is really good….so he has eyeliner on? So? Who cares? It has nothing to do with his vocals?
Look at Gene Simmons of Kiss–he wears makeup. And that was back in the 70′s.
Look at Alice Cooper? the name Alice for a guy? And look at his makeup? again back in the 70′s. This is 2009………
Hey, give this kid a break…he has a great future ahead of him….don’t start ruining it before it’s begun.
And as far as Bill O’Reilly is concerned. Usually I listen to his comments with respect. But this time he’s really trying to cause s..t. Hey Bill, didn’t your mother teach you that ‘if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing! I’m very disappointed to think that you have nothing more important to talk about. Not many people like you but you keep doing what you do.
So Adam, just keep on doing what you are doing. You have all of America and Canada behind you.

From a Canadian mom who thinks you’re great!

  • TerryG

This article was from Maclean’s. I haven’t looked at a Macleans magazine or article in quite some time. What a decline. Tabloid trash. I guess that places Maclean’s in a new category – read only while waiting in line at the grocery store.

  • Phil

Gay or not, Adam is awesome. Freddy Mercury was gay but Theres not a person on the planet that can honestly say he wasn’t one of, if not “THE” best rock singer the planet has ever seen. However, it dosen’t matter anyway. There is more to it thn hitting notes and looking the part. Taylor hicks proved that a long time ago. Danny will be the winner.

  • anthony smith

now who really cares if hes gay or whatever, this kid can sing, and if he writes his own stuff , watch out. his voice is , i think , the best ever on idol and i look forward to his first cd. i am 55 yrs old and i know a upcommin superstar when i hear one. rock on Adam, and ii can t wait for your first cd to be released

  • Blabs

Having Adam perform first last night sure made the rest of the show boring. He is not only a terrific singer but a interesting performer. He would have fit in nicely on Rock Star Super Nova when that was going. At least he would have had some competion. Idol is way below him.

  • Shaun C

sf: Redneck isn’t an ethnic slur, it’s a socio-economic slur referring to a subset of a larger ethnicity. Redneck is a way of thinking and acting – nothing to do with one’s ethnicity. Basically, redneck refers to someone who is wilfully uneducated, has narrow opinions and is pretty much unaware of anything beyond reality TV, football, beer, pick-up trucks and artistic belching.

    • sf
