The Next 100 Days

by John Parisella on Thursday, May 7, 2009 1:11pm - 10 Comments

The reviews have been generally favourable to the Obama administration regarding the first 100 days. But despite the promising start, there is a downside to it—from now on, the administration will be primarily judged on the merits of its policies. Much of what Obama inherited was Bush-created and Bush-driven, but the stimulus package, the proposed budget and the new initiatives in foreign policy all bear his fingerprints. It is safe to say that the next 100 days will be more critical to the success or failure of the new administration .

Regarding the economy, the “glimmers of hope” remain just that. Expect unemployment to keep rising in the next quarter, followed by calls for a new stimulus package. It is clear that a second stimulus package will be considered in light of the proposed budget, which will already include substantial new spending and increase the deficit. Given this, the Republicans may finally get their act together and succeed in building opposition to additional stimulus. And Blue Dog (conservative) Democrats may suddenly resist in open revolt. It is also possible that more controversies such as the AIG bonuses (which were drastically underestimated in an earlier report) may actually polarize the population and turn it against the administration.

We also can expect a showdown on the unspecified items in the budget regarding healthcare, education and the environment. Congress, while dominated by the Democrats, may conclude that Obama has bitten off more than he can chew. Look to Congress to give in to the president on his signature and legacy priority, universal healthcare. However, it could prove less enthusiastic on other issues, such as cap and trade. This is where the skills of the vaunted Obama staff will be the determining factor. Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel will earn his keep as Congress will be in election mode by the fall of this year. Will Obama maintain his popularity as he enters the nitty gritty of politics in bringing his policies home? Will Obama’s media presence be as sustained and effective once memories of the previous unpopular administration start to fade?

On the foreign policy front, President Obama has chosen to become directly engaged in the Middle East peace process, pushing for a two-state solution involving Israel and Palestine. In addition, he has intervened directly on the Pakistan and Afghanistan files, both of which have been hampered by the weakness of their respective governments. Add to this Iran’s and North Korea’s nuclear muscle-flexing to the minefield of unexpected problems that could crop up on the international scene. Obama has a ‘crackerjack’ foreign policy team with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton leading the way, but international issues have an unpredictable side to them that can easily derail even the most controlled policy agenda. We also cannot underestimate the debate on the torture memos, which will surely polarize the major parties in Congress and may actually divide the Democrats if Obama resists taking a more aggressive stance against the perpetrators of these memos.

The next 100 days will be a greater test for this administration than the first 100. Obama and his team have up to now shown skill and discipline. They have been audacious at times, yet cautious at other moments. They know the challenges and have not been reluctant to face them. Most importantly, the American people want Barack Obama to succeed. This ultimately may be his greatest asset as he enters the next 100 days.

I think he was given a honeymoon in the 1st 100. He will find it more difficult in the next period . big spending , high deficit liberal and not feared internationally . Plus ,the Republicans will get their act together. Rush, Bill o’Reilly etc will be after him .

“Plus ,the Republicans will get their act together. Rush, Bill o’Reilly etc will be after him .”

The risk that President Obama will be Nibbled to Death by Clucks, I’m guessing, is rather minimal.

“In addition, he has intervened directly on the Pakistan and Afghanistan files, both of which have been hampered by the weakness of their respective governments.”

Gosh, I’m amazed that there could be problems with the US policy of installing and propping up unrepresentative, corrupt and highly unpopular foreign governments with hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer’s money and thousands of US lives. Still a little weakness, eh?

But it sounds like the winning combination is going to be: propping up unrepresentative, corrupt and highly unpopular foreign governments with hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer money and thousands of US lives, PLUS the personal intervention of the president to, you know, really talk to those guys and get them on side. The next 100 days should see quite a change.

Now let’s go down the list … prop up invsolvent and corrupt governments in Israel and its neighbors with billions of dollars – but really talk to those guys to get them on side. Prop up insolvent, corrupt and highly unpopular banks with billions of dollars – but really talk to those bankers and make them run their banks right. Prop up insolvent and highly unpopular carmakers with tens of billions of dollars – but really talk to those car executives to make them build cars the way you want. And so on.

I think I’ve found the secret to Obama’s tremendous … errr … success. (1) Give someone billions of dollars. (2) Really talk to them.

Oh yes and part (3), really talk to the Chinese to convince them to keep buying US treasuries forever so you can continue afford to do (1) and (2).

How can you leave out the GM/Chrysler debacle when talking about the next one hundred days?

UAW has just been given control of Chrysler, what could possibly go wrong with that?, ahead of creditors who have more legal claim to stake than union does. Obama and his auto czar, who is otherwise a bag man for Dems, have circumvented laws in order to put unions and governments in charge of automakers ahead of the creditors who own way more debt than any other group. And god knows what scheme Obama and his auto task force have got cooked up for GM but it ain’t going to be pretty.

Personally, I think this issue is going to define Obama’s admin. People are passionate about cars and if Obama/UAW don’t turn around Chrysler and GM quickly, which is not at all likely, than there is going to be hell to pay.

you are wrong jwl . GM and Chysler were in trouble before Obama and he won`t be blamed . Save or not . John is right not to make a highlight but it will be news . That I will concede . As for me , I drive a Toyota which speaks volumes . I drove a Chrysler for 18 years . It was a gas guzzler and had more of its share of repairs. It will NOT define Obama.

Oh, and the “car czar ” may have other things on his mind soon ……

Swine flu (A-H1N1) and Healthcare In America

Well my fellow Americans, and people of the World. That was yet another very close potential catastrophe. Especially for those of us that live in America with our busted, greed driven, private for profit healthcare system. What ever you do World. Don’t copy our current healthcare system.

If that virus (A-H1N1) had emerged just a few months earlier our busted healthcare system in America would have collapsed. Just like our economy almost did. And hundreds of thousands more Americans, if not millions would have needlessly lost their lives. As hospital ER’s became choked with the sick, and dying.

All on top of the hundreds of thousands of Americans who needlessly lose their lives in America each year from a rush to profit by the private for profit healthcare industry. Rich, middle class, and poor a like. Insured, and uninsured. Men Women, Children, and Babies.

This was yet another big WAKE-UP! call for America, and for our Government. It’s time for Congress to end the debate. And stop dancing around the issues of how they can continue to try and justify protecting the private for profit healthcare industry, and the private for profit healthcare insurance industry. These industries are killing hundreds of thousands of Americans every year in America, and endangering our National security.

“the health-care system is, first and foremost, for the American people—not the companies that profit from it.” (Tom Daschle | NEWSWEEK)

IT’S OVER! The Private for profit healthcare experiment in America is dead. It FAILED! And it was a DISASTER!

“NOT FOR PROFIT, TAX PAYER SUPPORTED, SINGLE PAYER, AUTOMATIC, FREE UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE FOR ALL. Is the ONLY! way to go.

Essentially HR676 (enhanced, and expanded medicare for all). Just like every other CIVILIZED! country in the developed World has. There is no other way to truly fix or reform our current disastrous healthcare delivery system. NONE!

Congress, fix our healthcare crisis while you still have time.

President Obama, VP Biden, the Obama administration and the rest of his advisors, along with Speaker Pelosi and Harry Reid are doing an excellent job of protecting you. And also an excellent job of representing you and the best interest of the World. But it’s time for the rest of Congress to get on board.

To those of you who keep standing up and fighting for single-payer universal healthcare for all. YOU! are Americas true HEROES! And I am proud of you. :-) Don’t let up.

I will have more to say about this VERY! unusual virus (A-H1N1), and flu in general, later. There are some things you really need to know and think about… All of you.

Till then, God Bless And Keep You All

“All on top of the hundreds of thousands of Americans who needlessly lose their lives in America each year from a rush to profit by the private for profit healthcare industry.”

People die all the time on waiting lists in Canada’s non-profit health care industry. And what do you mean, “non profit”? Our doctors, government health care bureaucrats or hospital administrator drones are making a ton of money from the health industry. They don’t give away their time for free. And hospital supplies, laboratory services and medicine … they cost a lot and the suppliers make loadsadough in profits and salaries. Which is why the Canadian socialist medical system is going broke at about the same speed as the American socialist medicaid/medicare system.

The problem is, health care is expensive, but “single payer” means “nobody has to pay”.

Better plan on taking care of your own and your family’s health care in the future. Obamunism can’t save you from the laws of economics, no matter what Tom Daschle says.
