Rise of the Conservative-Socialist Coalition (Scene 2)

by Aaron Wherry on Monday, May 11, 2009 5:07pm - 11 Comments

From Bev Oda’s scrum after QP.

Question: How come it took only one word from either Michael Ignatieff or Jack Layton who’s not here but it took only one word to have them leave the place, how come your government wasn’t able to provide that and resolve the situation?

Hon. Beverley Oda: Well, I don’t agree. I think there are officers, law officers of the city of Toronto that were there present with the protesters, etc. I think there are probably members of the demonstration who were also concerned for their own lives being on a major highway in Toronto so consequently I don’t agree that it’s just a matter of -

Question: So why did you thank Jack Layton? Why did you —

Hon. Beverley Oda: Well, he did play a useful role yesterday in diffusing some of the increased temperament that was rising.

Question:(Inaudible) the opposition or was the government involved in any way?

Hon. Beverley Oda: The government has been monitoring the situation. I’m not sure with the Liberals – I’m not aware but I know that our Prime Minister spoke with Mr. Layton and they shared mutual concerns about the demonstration and what’s happening in Sri Lanka.

How can Bev Oda say she has been monitoring the situation and have missed the media reports stating the Liberal connection but knew of the NDP’s?

There’s partisan and then there’s embarrassing.

If any of Oda’s staff is reading this, you should be embarrassed too, that is pitiful.

    Brilliant!

So you’re cool with the NDP so long as the Conservatives govern? Really?

      • Wayne

do you understand our system? this is what is known as a minority gov’t and in a minority gov’t there is a constant interplay between the various parties and the issues they wish to pursue which only benefits canadain voters which is why they vote in minority gov’ts now I know some hyper partisans don’t like this but such is life deal with it. There will always be either conflict or cooperation between the various parties this of course being an example if the CPC and the NDP agree on a item then they can both vote so in the House and if this does not sit well with another party – who cares

Does a simple Thank-you be so controversial? Does common courtesy be disected to this extent????

  • catherine

Did Layton ask Harper what to do or for permission to raise this issue? Why couldn’t Layton just go ahead and say he would raise the issue, like Ignatieff did, without checking with Harper first?

It’s nice to see some of the parties cooperating in Parliament. We’ve had 3 elections in 5 years with the last one just 6 months ago. The parties should try to make things work and all put a little water in their wine.

Messrs Dion, Layton & Duceppe will be retroactively heartened by your support.

It’s always nice to know that if there’s one thing you can count on, it’s that Conservative supporters will be intellectually dishonest!

Yet another disgusting sweeping generality about “Conservative supporters.” Says more about you, matthew.
