Underrated Theme Songs

Does anybody have an example of a TV theme song that is underrated — one that is not usually named among the all-time great themes, but that you think is better than a lot of more acclaimed TV songs? (What brought this to mind was the argument about the Parks and Recreation theme song, which some commenters didn’t like and others did.)

One song from a hit show that I think is kind of underrated is the Who’s the Boss? theme song. I know it’s easy to make fun of, but then, so are most songs from “family” shows of that era. And whereas all those other themes were overblown anthems about how awesome the characters’ lives are, the WTB song (with lyrics by the show’s creators) is kind of wistful and sweet, and optimistic without piling on the “we got the world spinnin’ right in our hands/face of somebody who needs you/sha la la la” forced jollity.

(Remember when Global and “Prime,” now known as TVTropolis, used to plaster the “On…[]” logo on every show?)

I also think the theme song to My Name Is Earl, “What Goes Around Comes Around,” is underrated, but that’s mostly because the show hides it, burying it under Earl’s narration and then cutting out the title sequence altogether (it is heard over the closing credits, but the network never shows the closing credits sequence). I think it does a good job of capturing the tone that this show was going for; in its east-meets-west arrangement, it really does sound like the theme song of a redneck who embraces the concept of karma.

My all time fave was the opening theme of Now & Again. There were two minor variations, as I remember it, but it was very catchy, and I really liked how it fit the tone of the show.

Even though it has no lyrics, the theme from Angel was really good.

My fav theme song was/is Magnum PI but I have no idea if it falls into category of under-rated or not.

And Jaime, I finally decided to watch TBBT because of your multiple posts about it. It is very funny indeed, so I thank you for introducing me to new show.

So far, I have only watched three episodes and like all the characters except Howard, not sure what he brings to the show. My fav character is Rajesh and his explanations of karma. Loved when said karma was ‘practically Newtonian’ the other week and this week’s quip about coming back as a well hung billionaire with wings also made me laugh.

The White Shadow (Can’t even find it on YouTube).

One of my favorite theme songs, and one that doesn’t get all that much love, is the theme from NewsRadio. On the DVDs, Dave Foley or someone talks about it being unmemorable. That’s insane, I say! INSANE!

    • Mary Lynn

Pretty much everything about NewsRadio was under-rated, including the theme song.

I find the them from Psyche strangely compelling.

Also, Wonderfalls had a great theme.

  • Bathurst

Hans Zimmer’s theme for “The Critic.”

    It did not stink

The Drew Carey Show had great themes… Moon over Parma, Five O’Clock World, and Cleveland Rocks. In the later seasons (when people had stopped paying attention) they also had different covers of the themes which were really cool.

Seinfeld – while the show is rightly recognized for its brilliance the great theme song with the catchy bass riff and spoken-like sound effects isn’t talked about much.

I was going to say Drew Carey Show as well. First show that came to mind.

I hated that. Especially the way they’d try (but not very hard) to match the font in the title card, so it’d just stick out even more than a boring, neutral Helvetica.

  • Sean Stokholm

I was kind of partial to the theme from The Fall Guy. (I was probably twelve at the time, so don’t judge me!).

If memory serves me, that’s Lee Majors singing, renaissance man that he is.

This is going a ways back — 38 years to be exact — but the opening theme from the NBC British import series “From A Bird’s Eye View”, was underrated (probably because the show only lasted 16 episodes)
