Torture and the Pelosi Diversion

by John Parisella on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 11:49am - 13 Comments

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has never been one to shy away from a good fight. This time, she has entered a battle that is very much of her own making. Her reversals and confusing explanations have shifted the debate from whether former Bush-Cheney officials should be investigated and possibly prosecuted for their roles in the torturing of terrorism suspects to what she knew and when she found out about it. Give the Republicans credit for adroitly exploiting the diversion after the Dick Cheney media offensive was clearly becoming a liability for the GOP. Nothing better than to put the Speaker on the defensive and shift the debate away from their increasingly disturbing record on torture.

This being said, the torture debate is only heating up. The evidence increasingly seems to suggest that torture was used to link 9/11 to Iraq and thereby justify the invasion. There is now evidence that torture was going on while Bush was telling the nation the exact opposite. What really matters is whether the US government knowingly contravened domestic law, the Constitution or the Geneva Conventions. Either of those scenarios would be enough to justify a special non-partisan or bipartisan commission to get to the truth.

This weekend, Cheney’s daughter Liz referred to Obama’s actions on national security as un-Americain. Later in the week, Cheney will once again justify the actions of his administration on “enhanced interrogation techniques” before a right wing, partisan crowd at the American Enterprise Institute. But there is nothing quite as effective as using Pelosi to make Americans forget the real perpetrators of torture and the extent to which it was used.

It’s hardly a diversion. Back in 2001-2004, Democrats were terrified of looking weak on national security, and went along with a lot of things they’d now like to pretend they didn’t. It’s a bit rich to claim that Pelosi and other senior Democrats knowing and privately endorsing interrogation plans back then is meaningless, because the really important political goal today is Dick Cheney’s scalp.

I’ll repeat it again here: There will be no meaningful “truth commission” and no war crimes charges. Obama will maintain as many of these policies as necessary, all the while being applauded by a docile domestic media for how much better he is than those horrid Republicans.

By all means, do keep fantasizing, though, if the thought of political revenge for policies you dislike makes you feel better.

Interesting how the right is indifferent to political and constitutional crime

I don’t think many people are claiming its meaningless, outside of right wing imaginations. (unless they’re talking aobut the very real issue of a difference between knowledge and authorization).

Actually, I blame Pelosi and her kind more than Cheney. Cheney at least makes no apologies for what he did, and has been true to his conviction that the ends justify the means.

Pelosi and many others in the US Congress knew what was happening, knew it was wrong, but failed to speak up through weakness and political calculation. Now she is paying the price, and I hope it costs her dearly.

Likewise. In fact her culpability is a big bonus to pro-tribunal people like me, since it will make the witchhunt bipartisan.

      • Critical Reasoning

I’m not averse to prosecutions, but your use of the word “witchhunt” isn’t exactly selling it to me.

I agree with Bill S that Cheney is much more admirable in that he’s sticking with his beliefs while Pelosi and other Dems are spinning furiously about how that was then and this is now.

That’s an interesting argument you seem to be making, Parisella. It is the Repubs nasty ways that put Pelosi into the spotlight, never mind that she’s a liar and is on her fifth or sixth explanation for what she knew and when she knew it. I also liked Pelosi’s gambit of accusing the CIA of lying last week. I had no idea the Repubs were such accomplished puppet masters that they could make Pelosi look so foolish.

If Pelosi and other top ranking Dems knew what the CIA was up to, which they did, they are just as much part of the conspiracy to commit crimes that Cheney et al were.

    • Bill Simpson

To be clear, I find Cheney despicable, and Pelosi contemptible – no admiration there at all!

I think jwl has it right . Pelosi is a train wreck and becoming an embarrassment to Obama. What did she know and when is the question. Why did she not speak out ? Cheney and al.did what they had to do to keep America safe . Pelosi is her own diversion but the Reublicans are finally waking up and here I agree with parislla, they kept it in the news .But it was not hard to do with train wreck Pelosi.

All that is needed for Pelosi is for the waters to get muddy. Darn them Repubs and their diversions… they r good.

A party faction that’s supported by 20% of the US population is getting so much media face time …. poor Jack Layton , eh.

Of course , there’s a lot of hot air about not much happening ……

Pelosi was not helpful but lest we forget:Bush-Cheney :falsified the pretext for war, asked for and approved the rationale for torture,Cheney is scaring people and setting up Obama for blame if there is an attack. These guys outed Valerie Plaine , lied to Congress, fired DOJ attorneys who did not do what they were told . What about Haliburton contracts . I could go on . I once voted Bush but these guys should have been impeached .WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!
