A show of respect

From QP this afternoon. Lawrence Cannon tries to respond to a question about Sri Lanka from Bob Rae.

Cannon: Mr. Speaker, the honourable minister knows very well from the beginning of this—

(Liberals applaud. Bob Rae stands and bows.)

Cannon: The honourable former prime minister knows full well, that’s even better.

(Liberals applaud. Bob Rae stands and bows)

The Speaker: Order, order. The Minister of Foreign Affairs has the floor. We will have to have some order so his response can be heard.

Cannon: The former premier of Ontario, how is that?

(Conservatives cheer.)

A pretty good lost in translation moment.

It was Lawrence Cannon who was lost in translation.

He was speaking in English the entire time so he must have made the translation in his head from Premier Ministre to Prime Minister instead of Premier.

That must have been a fun few moments. I especially loved the part about the Conservative cheering at the end. I’m still smiling.

But the question, and the reply, were probably quite serious. It must have been difficult to give the subject the proper gravity after that. I do hope nobody uses that amusing bit of mis-speak against anybody.
