Michaëlle Jean is Canada's Sarah Palin. Really?

Isn’t that like comparing Adrienne Clarkson to Roseanne Barr? We investigate.

Michaëlle Jean is Canada's Sarah Palin. Really? Governor General Michaëlle Jean is smart enough to know that gutting a freshly-killed seal and then eating a piece of its raw heart on the first day of her visit to Nunavut was likely to generate headlines. After all, how often are two such contentious Canadian bickering points—the seal hunt and the GG—served up in such a delectable package? So it was a surprise that the weirdest salvo came not from Canadian media but from south of the border. And brutish it was: “Meet Michëalle Jean, the Sarah Palin of Canada” read the headline on Gawker.com, a New York City-based media website known for its snark.

Its familiarity with the big landmass to its north is another matter. Clearly there was no clue that likening the cosmopolitan GG with the Annie Oakley of the GOP is like comparing former governor general Adrienne Clarkson to Roseanne Barr. Or George Clooney to Tom Green. In fairness to Gawker, which did take the time to scan Jean’s Wikipedia entry before posting, similarities between the two women exist—aside from the fact the word “governor” is in both their titles. Both share a taste for sexy librarian glasses. Both are former journalists. And had Gawker spent another two minutes in research mode, it might have discovered both women were dragged into semi-scandals as a result of their husbands’ “separatist” proclivities (Todd Palin was once a member of the Alaskan Independence Party; Jean’s husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, has been accused of supporting Quebec separatism). And (even more shockingly!) both have committed geography faux pas—Palin boasted she could see Russia from her front porch, Jean told a group of schoolchildren last February that the Rockies could be viewed from Vancouver.

What is most amusing about Gawker’s bogus compare and contrast, though, is its blithe ignorance about the comedian-spewing country to its north—which is responsible for the stunning disparities between the two women. Jean, who fled Haiti with her family as a refugee at age 11, speaks fluent French, English, Spanish, Italian, and Haitian Creole. Palin, on the other hand, is most fluent in front of a teleprompter. And it defeats the imagination to imagine Palin ever having a conversation with Barack Obama, let alone hitting it off with him, as did the Governor General during his visit to Ottawa in February. Jean, who greeted him, used the opportunity to discuss the current plight of Haiti; Obama was so impressed he invited her to visit Washington, an offer he didn’t extend to the prime minister.

The most obvious similarity between the two women that Gawker failed to note is, ironically, at root of their greatest difference. Both Palin and Jean arrived on their national political stages as tokens. When named John McCain’s VP running mate, Palin was touted as a brash political change agent—a promise decidedly unfulfilled. Yet Jean, literally a token figurehead with no political power, has stealthily become an agent for change—in suspending parliament, in forging alliances with the President and now expressing unambiguous support for sealers at a time when they’re under cultural and economic assault. Just this month, the European Union banned their sale. Chewing bloody seal muscle (which Jean reported tastes “like sushi”) won’t win her friends among the European—or Canadian—chattering classes.  Not that she can admit to political motive. When asked if the gesture was in solidarity with the Inuit hunters she was appropriately oblique: “Take from that what you will,” she said. That would be Canadian for “You betcha!”

Our head of state rocks. No hypocrite she. I’m so proud to be Canadian today!

    • danby

Though it is really a shame that when she (justifiably) agreed to the PM’s request to prorogue Parliament, she also did not see fit to offer the public a lesson in how our system works. Mr Harper and Co were taking to the airwaves to declare a coalition “illegal”, which it most certainly was not. By granting the proroguement and setting the record straight she would have really “rocked”.

      • LeenieJ

true danby; would have gone a long way to shedding some light on the subject and would have further revealed the petulant PMStephen for what he is.

  • Bud

Wow. How tres juvenile. Stop being the Ugly Canadian.

  • Chris

Our Governor General is nothing like Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin was a self-made business woman who fought the establishment and got elected governor of a state.

Contrast that with our esteemed G-G, whose chief accomplishment was to serve as an obscure but ethnically and ideologically correct reporter for our disgrace of a national broadcaster before being made head of state via a politically-calculated appointment.

I’ll trade Jean for Palin any day.

    • http://www.jackmitchell.ca Jack Mitchell

In fairness, our esteemed GG didn’t have the advantage of being a moron.

    • nd

A self-made businesswoman, ftw? What business did she start?

  • Goober3

Sarah Palin never said she could see Russia from her house; that line was from a Saturday Night Live skit with a comedienne imitating Palin. What Palin did say was you could see Russia from Alaska, which is true. Please take your job more seriously and stop spreading lies about Sarah Palin.

    • sf

I know, it’s ridiculous that these journalists cannot do a simple fact check. This lie has been regurgitated long enough.

      • http://www.jackmitchell.ca Jack Mitchell

LOL. What she said was that she had plenty of foreign policy experience because you could see Russia from Alaska. That is even stupider than claiming to be able to see Alaska from her front porch.

I love it when guys like sf tie their rowboat to the Palin Titanic. The self-satire just doesn’t stop.

        • john g

Yes, thank God that instead of that Palin idiot we’ve got a smart, capable VP like Joe Biden in there instead.

          • http://www.jackmitchell.ca Jack Mitchell

That’s the best you can do, eh? Compared to a woman who literally can’t put a coherent sentence together and sounds like a brash PTA dictator?

          • john g

Well there’s plenty more where that came from, but yeah, I thought that accidently disclosing his own secret hideout in the event of a terrorist attack was pretty over the top.

But if you want more, how about telling a wheelchair bound Senator to stand up so the crowd can see him? Or how FDR went on television after the stock market crash of the 30′s? You know, the guy who wasn’t president yet, going on a television which hadn’t been invented yet? Or starting a panic by suggesting that he would avoid public transportation after the swine flu outbreak?

I’m not suggesting that Palin is the sharpest knife in the drawer, but come on…Biden is every bit the disaster that Palin was projected to be.

          • http://www.jackmitchell.ca Jack Mitchell

If Palin were VP today, she’d be under lock & key so that she never, ever talked to the media about anything whatsoever. Then McCain would drop dead and we’d be living in a world in which someone who is not merely gaffe-prone, like Biden is, but who is an actual living breathing gaffe herself, had her finger on the nuclear trigger. Biden may have his faults but he is not a blithering idiot who believes in the imminent Rapture.

          • Critical Reasoning

Jack, I had precisely the same fears about Palin. Picking her was the worst mistake McCain ever made in his life. He should have gone with Lieberman, as he wanted to, but key advisors persuaded him that the only way to beat Obama would be with a gimmick, like an attractive (yet completely unqualified) female VP. In my view, this was such a serious error in judgment that it disqualified McCain as a credible POTUS.

With regards to Palin, I feel that the media unfairly attacked her family and her personal life. On the other hand, the media played an important role in exposing Palin’s unprecedented lack of knowledge and credentials.

          • john g

With regards to Palin, I feel that the media unfairly attacked her family and her personal life.

This is definitely true. And any pretense that this media onslaught wasn’t politically motivated went out the window when they failed to hold Ashley Biden to the same standard as Bristol Palin.

          • http://www.jackmitchell.ca Jack Mitchell

But Palin’s whole schtick was identity-driven. It was she who used her family as window dressing, as the basis of her candidacy. If she hadn’t made them celebrities, the media wouldn’t have been so interested in them. Perils of lifestyle politics.

          • Critical Reasoning

All candidates for high office in the United States use their families as window dressing. It’s one of the more striking differences between American and Canadian politics.

If she hadn’t made them celebrities, the media wouldn’t have been so interested in them.

I disagree. The media interest in Palin’s family would have been ferocious even if she had not “used” them in her campaign.

          • http://www.jackmitchell.ca Jack Mitchell

I take your point, CR, about the lifestyle / identity politics in the States. But I do think that the Palin family got raked over the coals that much more because Sarah Palin refused to speak to the press. I mean, here’s this surprising VP pick of McCain’s, rather unknown to the electorate, and she basically gives no press conference for two weeks after being nominated! And then she gives two or three interviews (goofing demonically) and that’s it! If she won’t (/can’t) talk to the press, and she’s a major celebrity, and she’s an unknown who might have the power to kill the world, the media will tackle what they can get their hands on: her family story. If she’d talked to them voluntarily, different story.

          • john g

Jack I don’t think you’re remembering this correctly. The media went after Bristol Palin’s pregnancy almost within hours of Palin’s nomination, and it was a free for all after that. They even went so far as to make up a story that Trig was actually Bristol’s son and that Sarah Palin was covering for her, despite the fact that evidence to the contrary was easy to find.

You can argue that Palin used her family as window dressing if you like, or that they made a convenient target because of her unavailability (which I think is belied by the facts), but even so, no child deserves to be dragged through the mud this way, as collateral damage in a politically motivated media feeding frenzy against her mother, and I’m surprised that you would find such treatment acceptable.

          • http://www.jackmitchell.ca Jack Mitchell

I don’t find it acceptable, inherently; but in the context of US politics it seems there’s a point at which morality no longer applies. From our safe, snug bastion of relative moral decency, we can decry the mocking of a VP candidate’s family, or the absurd paranoia about Obama’s birth certificate, etc.; but as someone who was living in the States through the swiftboating of John Kerry, as someone who knows that the Republicans literally hold nothing, not even military service and physical courage, sacred, I can only say that Sarah Palin’s family got what they deserved for having such a mother. It’s a war down there, john g, and innocent people get smeared. Another good reason to be glad we’re not American.

          • john g

I can only say that Sarah Palin’s family got what they deserved for having such a mother.

Wow. I’m shocked. You’re supposed to be some kind of an elder statesman here, but I can’t believe that statement originated from you.

For having such a mother?!? What has Sarah Palin done, other than be a social conservative that does not meet your expected qualifications for VP, that justifies what has been done to Bristol Palin? What crime has she committed?

At least the Republican attacks, fair or not, were against the candidate himself, not his family, and especially not his children. Apparantly the Democrats and their media lapdogs don’t even hold that much sacred, so I’m not sure how they (or you) can claim any kind of moral high ground over the Republicans.

          • http://www.jackmitchell.ca Jack Mitchell

“Elder statesman”? I think of myself as a young buck / blade! : )

No no, you’re right. It’s all deplorable and despicable. They’ve gotten themselves into a black hole of spite, in which nothing’s off the table. I don’t condone it, and especially not attacks on someone’s innocent family. But in all fairness I think you have to blame their political climate as a whole, of which the anti-Palin propaganda was merely a symptom.

        • LeenieJ

it was stunning to watch and a bit frightening to see her con get so far.

    • sf

You’d think that someone making this claim:
is its blithe ignorance about the comedian-spewing country to its north
would not be so ignorant herself.

    • nd

Yeah, I don’t see the need to fixate on that one line – Palin said much stupider things during her tenure as America’s most prominent failed political stunt.

      • LeenieJ

yeah, like calling herself a female dog of questionable breed.

  • sf

The biggest difference is that Palin was elected, while Jean was appointed.

  • Durward

This is really poor journalism, there is no point and many “facts” are just plain wrong.
Micheal Jean could not ever hold a candle to the accomplishments of Sarah Palin regardless of your bias.
Incidentally it was not Palin that said I can see Russia from my porch, it the actress on Saturday night live, Palin said you can see Russia from Alaska and you can, twit.

    • Derek Pearce

…but she said that because one can see Russia from Alaska, it gave her foreign policy experience! I guess that means that my relatives in Windsor, ON, or my friends in Brockville, ON, have foreign policy experience because they can see the US from the places they live, right Durward? Are you pulling our legs here buddy?

As for “not holding a candle to” blah blah blah, let’s see if we can come up with terms of reference for a debate, and we’ll ask Palin and Jean to take opposing viewpoints. Who do you think would win? The woman can barely form a coherent sentence for god’s sake.

      • Charles Allan

I thought it was Cindy McCain who said it about Palin.

  • AB

I have to say I’m really impressed. Speaking of Adrienne Clarkson, I’m certain she never would have done something like this. Could we interest you in some prairie oysters Madame Jean?

  • Jeet

Where do these people come from. Canada’s CBC Governor General is to Sarah Palin what Rita McNail is to Beyonce. Comparing a politically correct life-long government worker with a self made woman is an insult to Alaskas governor. Obama was impressed was he==thinking with his little head again?

    • sw

      Gross.

    • danby

      and stoopid

    • LeenieJ

      disgusting

  • NordicNorm

Our GG rocks! You go girl!

That’ll put a chill into any reception she receives in Europe!

Now any visiting dignitary will be requesting an advance copy of the menu for any dinners the GG hosts! ;)

  • Kyle Bailey

(please delete this comment if above comment is removed for sake of continuity)
Rob,I had a clever rejionder about which person needs to be returned to a village….but then I saw the ‘report abuse’ button- believe it or not, explicit ad hominem attacks (especailly ones that don’t make sense) fits under most people’s definitions of ‘abuse.’

  • Kyle Bailey

Slate had a great explainer on seeing Russia from Alaska “yes, but only the boring parts|. Of course, you can only see an uninhabitated island or some mountains on the very sparsely populated mainland…..which means that Palin’s version of foreign policy experience would be really good for staking U.S. claims to the arctic….but not much else.
    http://www.slate.com/id/2200155/

I mean, the mayor of say, San Francisco probably has more relevant experience with shipping and trade from Russia, never mind the rest of the world. Of course, perhaps in Sarah Palin’s world the only important bits are pumping oil and hunting, and there is definately trade and cultural bonds between Russia and Alaska on that front.

Anyway, I’m really impressed with the GG’s penchant for heart eating. I think it serves to not only stand in solidarity with hypocritical Europeans (lets ban French cows for inhumen slaughter!), but also remind Canadians that one of the true beauties of this land is the ehart of nature, whether observed on a nature walk or ceremoniusly eaten straight from the gut.
I have to say that I kind of suspected the GG was a little chicken re: coalition…but those words certainly don’t ring true anymore.

  • Haggus

I’m not fan of the GG, but I do see her in a much better light because of this. Good on her!

  • Meany

    Incorrect.

Canada’s Sarah Palin is Ruby Dallah.

Michaelle Jean does all sorts of crazy things that sets her apart from Sarah Palin’s, such as read. And think.

    • LeenieJ

      lol

  • tsktsk

    Macleans is going down hill.

One, bashing Americans is alive and well I see.

Two, this article rehashes the same lie about Sarah Palin.

Three, Obama showed special interest in the GG because she is a person of colour.

The GG is highly overrated, not that such details matter in the world of so-called journalism.

    • LeenieJ

      seriously…..pout much?

ALL MSM is going down hill. so what?

      1. bashing Americans? you mean Palin didn’t invite that on herself? my American family members make up better quips about her than many i’ve seen by Canadians. so whatever

      2. i get that you think Palin is privileged and agree with her that her freedom of speech was being attacked because the media wanted to interview her.

      and, wow; just wow.
      3. yeah that’s right; the brutha was down with tha sistah…tssss; bell hooks, the author, was correct when she said that not too long ago (less than 100 years ago) ppl thought a “black” woman was considered intelligent if she could say “please” “thank you” and could tie her shoes. the fact that Mme Jean is beautiful, interesting, and way more intelligent than Palin had absolutely no bearing on why Obama found it interesting to speak with her; none at all.

    • Charles Allan

      Re Three:
How do you know? That is YOUR bias. It takes such bias to believe that people of colour only see colour the way that whites do.

  • Gen. Lee Wright

I’m glad others have pointed this out. The quote was from ABC and no, had nothing to do with explaining her foreign policy experience – it was making light of how close Alaska was to Russia (true) and how although the comment was meant, unfairly, to call into question her experience (how many other landlocked governors have foreign policy experience?) she honestly does have to deal with Russians as her -gasp- second closest neighbours!

“…you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.”

That’s the exact quote and she’s refering to Big and Little Diomede Islands. Little Diomede is American, Big Diomede is Russian.

Tina Fey’s parody on Saturday Night Live is where this article’s author got her quote from. If she had spent two minutes in research mode, she would have known this. However, if she prefers to get her news from leftist sources such as this rag (I know, they’re trying hard to be balanced, and it’s only taken how many decades?) and SNL, then I understand how she could have made the mistake.

Finally no, it’s not like Clarkson to Barr, it would be more like Bill Gates to Steve Jobs: substance over fluff. Another good example would be any CEO to, well, Adrienne Clarkson actually. What’s ironic is you don’t understand that Clarkson isn’t actually someone to be admired, but you go ahead and do another two minutes’ worth of research to figure out why.

    • pb

I love how the pejorative ‘leftist’ instantly consigns anything its user has to say to the dogma dustheap, especially in the same sentence as ‘rag’, itself exemplifying a strong belief in free speech.
From here on, I shall call you my Auntie Diluvian.

    • LeenieJ

um. i think i can see with my own eyes and ears the Couric interview…Palin impaled herself.

  • sw

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.

GIBSON: What insight does that give you into what they’re doing in Georgia?

PALIN: Well, I’m giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relation with all of these countries, especially Russia.

    http://tinyurl.com/3l6hxz

Couric: You’ve cited Alaska’s proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?

Sarah Palin: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and, on our other side, the land-boundary that we have with Canada. It’s funny that a comment like that was kinda made to … I don’t know, you know … reporters.

    Couric: Mocked?

Palin: Yeah, mocked, I guess that’s the word, yeah.

Couric: Well, explain to me why that enhances your foreign-policy credentials.

Palin: Well, it certainly does, because our, our next-door neighbors are foreign countries, there in the state that I am the executive of.

    http://tinyurl.com/4dw6nr

    • danby

      ouch!

    • pb

Well, at least you can be sure of one thing…
Canadians would never elect someone who ended a sentence with a preposition! And – wow! – neither did Americans!

Lord! Don’t any of you people have jobs or household chores to do or… better things to do with a computer? Or a life?
Anne’s response was as equally ironic as Gawker’s piece. She just spanked them a little for getting the facts wrong. I loved the ‘comedian-spewing country to its north’ line. What I can’t believe is the moronic turbulence that ensues from this kind of thing.
I knew vitriol was cheap but you folks are all obviously heavy investors in this rather low penny stock.

    M. Jean is an airhead who made absolutely sure we had no government for 18 months. This — is her similarity to Palin — who made absolutely sure that the Republicans would lose. Both women — everything they touch — turns to _____________________.

      M. Jean is an airhead who made absolutely sure we had no government for 18 months
      Erm…
      Unless I was in a coma for 15 months…
Also, Mme Jean is an intelligent, wonderful, lovely woman.
I tend to oppose most thing British-Crown related, but I had an opportunity to meet her with the Encounters with Canada program- and she took my breath away.
She has absolutely nothing in common with Ms. Palin, except possibly the fact that both are intensly patriotic.

      • http://www.windyroom.wordpress.com truemuse

She’s had the chance to take all our breaths away more than once, but I think she prefers one-on-one showmanship and control ahead of courage, the type of courage that can truly impress. She should have stood up and showed some of that charm to all Canadians, in a S-P-E-E-C-H to attend her decision to put us out of government for months on end. How much of this deficit do you think is due to the fact that Parliament made no decisions for months? She can get publicity for eating a seal’s heart, but that is controlled — when it was Expected, that she would talk to us All, when all cameras, all newpaper Eyes were on her, she fell silent. So I’m not impressed. Not at all.

  • Hey

Err the controversy with regards to the Governor General’s husband wasn’t just that he supported separatism, but that he was friends with and worked with Members of the FLQ. He also wasn’t the only member of the couple who was believed to be a separatist by separatists.

Nice dismissive discounting of a festering problem.

  • Jacob

Whoah. It’s Gawker. I repeat: Gawker. If the Onion had produced a similar “article,” would your undies be in a similar bunch? It’s Gawker, for pete’s sake…why not hate on Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog some more while you’re at it.

    • PrincessLaLa

Thank you Jacob. Anne, this is embarrassing at best. It was a thinly veiled absurd HUMOUR piece rendering all above comments RIDICULOUS on GAWKER!!! When oh when will we get over our throbbing desperate ugly inferiority complex. How effing lame.

Anne, chill out, it’s a joke. When you freak out like this, you demonstrate a complete lack of any sense of humour, and making inane comparisons between Jean and Palin that are devoid of any irony only serves to embolden our enemies. So our GG ate a seal heart. That’s funny. That’s all. Oh, wait, you write for Maclean’s. Nevermind.

  • LeenieJ

    been wondering…

how do they even know who she is? that’s right, the Fake-Conservatives manipulated a $3B slush fund out of us (our tax dollars) and have been on a media tour blitz, hiring foreigners to promote Canada in the US.

stimulus money hard at work while ppl continue to lose jobs, homes, hope, et alii.

  • Terry MacKay

Some years ago, Prince Charles was touring Canada. He participated in an Inuit ceremony in the far north, where he was offered, and ate a piece of an organ (liver I believe) from a freshly killed seal. He was here on behalf of the Queen. The Governor General is here on behalf fo the Queen. No one criticized him for his action. What is the difference between the actions of the Prince of Wales, and those of the GG?

So Steak tartar is total no-no in Europe??? and no one eats their steak blue?

  • Adam Moscoe

Who cares about Palin, those American reporters where trying to drag down Michelle Jean with Sarah Palin. While they attempted to attack Michelle they also demonized Palin. Jean in my humble opinion is MUCH more sharp than Palin. The media didnt attack her because she was a woman, but because she has never governed more than 700, 000 people. 700,000 is the total population of alaska. And enough about Ashley Biden, she wasnt having sex with her boyfriend or pregnant while her father ran for VP.

From Macleans
