Government releases its innovation strategy

by Paul Wells on Sunday, May 31, 2009 11:58pm - 39 Comments

No, not ours. Australia‘s.

I don’t want anyone to fall into a sort of reflexive jealousy here. It’s about time an Australian government took science, research, and innovation-based industry seriously. They’re obviously even more exposed to Asian competitors than we are, and the Howard government left the Rudd government with plenty of catching up to do. They’ve started doing that. But while some elements of the Australian strategy will make Canadian scientists’ cheeks burn (such as naming a National Science Advisor, a post abolished here by the Harper government), in many cases the Australians are just turning their attention to areas like federal funding for the indirect costs of research, which Canadian governments of both stripes have begun to fund more than a half-decade ago.

Still, a handy reminder. The world will take these issues seriously whether Canadians do or not.

Why did the Harper government abolish the National Science Advisor post?

      Malice?

Because everyone knows that science has a strong Liberal bias!

R&D spending (public and private) as a % of GDP (which also rose quickly) rose under Howard by 25%. Lets cut Howard some slack here…

IntenseDebate is a mess. Change it back, please.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/macleans macleans

What turns you off of it exactly? Specifics please :)

      • Critical Reasoning

Style: Formerly crisp and spaced out, now cluttered.

Nested replies are often hidden, #_reply link must be clicked to view them, so replies are often overlooked, which impedes discussion

IntenseDebate seems to drag on certain browsers. Experiment: when typing a comment, try typing over text you have alreadt typed.

        • kcm

I'll second that. There was nothing wrong with the previous format. It was simple and gave a nice overview of all the comments. If you don't change back i may have to withold my free contributions, which i happily don't pay for.

          • Critical Reasoning

Seriously. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I just typed some more valuable user feedback, and received this message:

Your comment must be approved by the site admins before it will appear publicly.

Now I have to figure out which magic word may have triggered the filter. I used no unusual or offensive words.

      • Critical Reasoning

The comment filtering/moderation system is clearly out of whack. 2 of my last 5 comments have been deleted for no good reason. Regular commenters, like Sir Francis below, are getting irate because they are under the impression that they have been banned.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Jack_Mitchell Jack_Mitchell

Yes, comments are currently getting gobbled — both auto-moderated and auto-deleted.

          • http://dredtory.blogspot.com/ Sir Francis

            Jack:

Something tells me the filter is suppressing comments about Existentialist philosophers, since my reply to your comment about Nietzsche in a previous thread was auto-deleted. The moderator must be a Positivist…

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/Jack_Mitchell Jack_Mitchell

Ah, too bad! But we can return to the subject in future — fortunately Nietzsche is never far from my thoughts when I contemplate Canadian politics. : )

I think if memory serves the "Report" button is now where the "Reply" button used; I keep wanting to put my mouse there to reply to comments and finding a report button there instead. Is that what is causing comments to randomly disappear?

        • matt

I made a Tom Clancy reference and got banned.

Thumbs up/down is not conducive to good discussion. Check out the quality of Cdn newspaper comment boards, most of whom have adopted this annoying feature.

Also, no more autoplay Youtube videos.

Pure unadulterated WordPress was fine. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

I like the style and how fast the javascript is. I like the fact that you can have more "reply" levels than formerly. I like the RSS option, and I really like the edit option.

As CR says, comments are currently getting gobbled, both auto-moderated and auto-deleted. Also, the "deep" replies (replies to replies, and replies to replies to replies, etc.) from older posts are no longer displaying — hope they haven't disappeared permanently.

For my part, I quite like the aesthetic, and I'm sure these few glitches will be ironed out soon. I was shocked by the last change (when "replies" were introduced) and soon loved it. Our hearts & prayers are with you, Jonathan & team.

The avatars are now so tiny that they can only be distinguished by colour.

      • Mulletaur

This new comment format is both ugly and difficult to navigate. Why did you make the change ?

    • Critical Reasoning

Approve/disapprove is a lame feature that kills debate

    • john g

I'm not going to say the old format was perfect; my browser used to take forever to load the comment threads once it got past about 30 or so, and removing a comment really made a dog'd breakfast of the thread. That's a problem I was hoping to see addressed and the new format does seem to have better performance in that regard.

But aesthetically the old format was much nicer than this format.

  • Critical Reasoning

    Jonathan, try "Disqus" instead.

  • http://dredtory.blogspot.com/ Sir Francis

Just a test to see if I'm still banned…

  • Critical Reasoning

Login requirement to access certain features is unnecessary, and a disincentive to new commenters.

Login/User names are max. 15 characters, so my nick doesn't qualify. Also, no spaces allowed.

Most Read/Most Recent/Comments sidebar seems out of synch with the comments.

  • Critical Reasoning

"Subscribe" function is either seriously delayed, or not working entirely. No new email notifications yet for any comments that have been posted here.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Jack_Mitchell Jack_Mitchell

Not to sound greedy and imposing, but would it be possible to have permalinks for the comments, as we had in the old format?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Sir_Francis Sir_Francis

And the "reputation score". Please…What are we in–Grade Eleven?

Let each comment stand on its own merits. It serves no purpose to have it shadowed by some abstract "reputational" qualifier.

    • Mike514

Haha! Good point. It's become a popularity contest! But don't worry, Sir Francis, I'll vote for you for prom king…

  • Critical Reasoning

Yet another example of an unnecessary new "feature" that is best suited to internet forums where children share lolz about the flavour of the week in Japanese animation.

  • Dot

I find the new format reimagination-inspired.

  • Dot

Hmmm, my comment disappeared. Maybe check back in a week.

They’re obviously even more exposed to Asian competitors than we are

Paul, you might want to check out Joseph Heath's Filthy Lucre, chapter five in particular.

Countries don't compete with each other. Companies do, but that's not the same thing.

We should be preoccupied with productivity, but not for that reason.

  • Jenn

Man, we commenters are never satisfied, are we? First we complain we can't have the order of comments we want. Macleans' staff kindly works to find an alternative that allows us just that, and we don't like the login! Neither do I; I'm just sayin.
And Paul et al, it might be a good idea when swtiching thing up like this to give us a "what do you think" kind of thread where we can comment/complain, without hijacking a perfectly legitimate post.
