The Conservative war on irony continues

by Aaron Wherry on Monday, June 1, 2009 3:34pm - 7 Comments

New to the inbox, a press release from the Conservative party expressing deep and genuine concern that the Liberals are too loosely throwing around the notion of national unity. The breathless kicker:

Michael Ignatieff and his team recklessly throw around the term “national unity”. If Michael Ignatieff had spent more time in Canada, instead of living abroad for 34 years, he and his team would likely be more careful about raising the spectre of national unity concerns so frequently and in response to so many issues.

Zing!

Anyway. So Michael Ignatieff’s been out of the country for, like, ever. What’s Stephen Harper’s excuse?

    What’s Stephen Harper’s excuse?

    He's a Conservative.

I thought the most ironic moment of the lot was the stealing of Iggie's dumb idea to recognise Q as a nation within a nation by Steve the other panderer. I'm haunted by that moment and occasionally have nightmares that we have two opportunistic cads leading our country.

Why? Recognizing Q as a nation seems to be the one policy Harper's government got right. Either they are happy about being recognized as a nation and settle down, or they are further emboldened and separate. Win/win in my books.

    Excuse? For what?

How many referendums has there been since Harper has been in charge? Zero.

How many elections have the PQ won since Harper came to power? Zero.

How has the BQ done since Harper came to power? A lower vote percentage and lower seat count in each of the last two elections.

When did the BQ last gain seats in a federal election? When Paul Martin took over from Jean Chretien.

What is Wherry smoking? Nobody knows.

Yes – this can all be attributed to the great Stevie.
He is so great, and wise, and powerful.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!

But seriously – never mind what Wherry is smoking.
Can you hook me up with whatever you have?
