Wow. Macleans may have just lost a subscriber for how they characterise intellectual discussion.

      I can't tell if you're being over- or under-ironical.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/DroppingBY DroppingBY

Isn't the headline actually ridicule-based parody, or maybe parody-based ridicule?

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Jack_Mitchell Jack_Mitchell

          QED?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/LeenieJ LeenieJ

pot calling the kettle black on this one.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/ottawasteph ottawasteph

Wherry's paraphrasing the attack ads against Iggy. Or were YOU being sarcastic?

  • http://michaeltripper.com Michael T

Yeah, I immediately thought of Paikin when I heard Newman was leaving Politics. I enjoyed the studio show during my 7 years in T.O.

    • Marg Bedore

Paikin has not been balanced enough to replace Newman.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/LeenieJ LeenieJ

why? because he tempered PMStephen in the debates in the "broken law" election?

Paikin is precisely what Politics needs as a moderator.

  • http://michaeltripper.com Michael T

Actually Delacourt seems to be the best similar replacement for Don Newman

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/DroppingBY DroppingBY

      Kady for New Newman!

  • Capt. Discourageous

I assumed it would be Susan Bonner. She sits in for him when he's away.

    • CanadianInDC

Susan Bonner plays it straight, and I like that.

If it's Evan Solomon, I might slit my wrists.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/LeenieJ LeenieJ

Bonner was part of the attack force on Dion; i watched her play Conservative shill all election long instead of asking questions about his policy. it was remarkable and revealing.

          Steph:

At the risk of pole-vaulting over your head, Leenie is clearly addressing an earlier comment that Bonner "plays it straight". Leenie isn't necessarily denying a journalist's right or duty to be "critical"; the point is merely that Bonner is biased (i.e. uncritical at convenient times) and would thus be an unsuitable host for Politics.

Is that clear, or will you be needing some Coles Notes?

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/ottawasteph ottawasteph

            I firmly disagree, Sir F.

          • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/ottawasteph ottawasteph

I firmly disagree, Sir F. And getting sick of hearing the right wingers and their "Red under my bed" 'tude.

          • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/ottawasteph ottawasteph

I firmly disagree, Sir F. And getting sick of hearing the right wingers and their "Red under my bed" 'tude. We've witnessed a long series of gasp-inducing actions and non-actions from this crowd, you can't blame a journalist for gasping on the air.

          • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/ottawasteph ottawasteph

I firmly disagree, Sir F. Just getting sick of hearing the right wingers and their "Red under my bed" 'tude. We've witnessed a long series of gasp-inducing actions and non-actions from this crowd, you can't blame a journalist for gasping on the air.

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/Sir_Francis Sir_Francis

I think we're talking at cross-purposes here, Steph. You do realise that Leenie is the opposite of a "Red-under-my-bed" right-winger, right?

As for the self-serving nature of neo-con bleats of "media bias", I concur. It's pretty hard to stomach that nonsense after watching Con media hacks like Duffy get gifted with Senate seats.

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/ottawasteph ottawasteph

Oh frig, you're right. BTW For the record, I am not a Lib shill.

          • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/ottawasteph ottawasteph

Oh frig, you're right. Same song, different lyrics. BTW For the record, I am not a Lib shill.

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/Sir_Francis Sir_Francis

I am not a Lib shill.

I never got the impression you were.

  • M.A.N

    Out of touch elitists?

Did the smart kids make fun of you in High School or something?

  • CanadianInDC

    Seriously?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/LeenieJ LeenieJ

    imho,
(snark) yeah but did you see the eternally juvenile and privileged Levant promoting his new book before that?

he was like a wolf in sheep's clothing, very subdued and feigning an interest in fair play re: Human rights tribunals; he wants them done away with; he claims to want free speech. but his affiliation with at least one group that, against the majority will, successfully lobbied our govt to ban Galloway from Canada calls that into question.

such bad acting by what i consider to be a bad acter

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Crit_Reasoning Crit_Reasoning

This was another good, meaty Paikin discussion.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/SeanStok SeanStok

Paikin rarely disappoints. We're lucky to have him doing what he does.
