O Canada back in N.B. schools for good

Legislation ends national controversy

New Brunswick has passed legislation to ensure that the province’s schools play O Canada daily. In February, it was revealed that a N.B. principal had relegated the singing of the national anthem to special occasions due to religious concerns, sparking a national controversy. The principal of Belleisle Elementary School, Erik Millett, bore the brunt of the backlash, which included death threats. He later resigned.

Among the voices raised to sing the daily anthem will not be those of the hundreds of library and educational support staff Shawn Graham has recently cut from the department of education in NB.

According to Graham's priorities, however, students denied needed library and other educational supports will be compensated by a mandatory exercise in rote patriotism.

More anthems, fewer librarians for the citizens of tomorrow.

I think we have the measure of Shawn Graham's love of country.

Hey, Stephen! This entire country needs more politicians like Shawn Graham who have the wherewithall to stand up to those who think it's their God-given right, having just moved here from somewhere else, to complain about…well, everything they don't like about our wonderful country. But, man oh man, if we say or write anything remotely negative or crticial about their religious beliefs or customs or language or culture, we have Human Rights Commissions, and other left-leaning social reformers, down our throats. We can all thank Pierre Trudeau for the mess this country's in, and why we need to take many, many lessons from the U.S. about patriotism and what it's like to live in a true melting pot. And, we could also follow Australia's lead – people don't like the 'Australian way', then leave!!! BTW – I live in Alberta, and too bad my provincial government doesn't have the guts to mandate the playing of the national anthem in all of Alberta's schools, each and every morning.

Here!! Here!! But would they mandate the original version? That would tie some self profess red-necks in knots!

I couldn't agree with you more. Human Rights Commission is a fascist organization set to impinge upon the ethics of our country. O Canada should certainly be sung with great reverence and patriotic enthusiasm by our young people in schools all across the country. There should be no doubt that we are Canadian and proud of it. Australia has the right idea. We always seem to bow to whining minorities here and I always thought that democracy was the will of the majority.

Hey ABAlex, Any chance your rant could square the the facts of the NB case?

What have "human rights commissions," "Pierre Trudeau," or people from "somewhere else" got to do with this case?
