Sarah Palin For President

What the governor of Alaska needs to do to be ready for 2012

palinSounds far-fetched and, to some, totally implausible. But the Republicans are losing potential candidates at a pace that is downright alarming if you believe in a healthy two-party system. The demise of John Ensign’s political career a few weeks ago and the surreal downfall of Mark Sanford last week is enough to send chills through the even the most optimistic Republican strategist. We know that of the 2008 crop, only Mitt Romney seems likely to stay on as a contender. The old stalwarts like Newt Gingrich may get a lot of press, but it is unlikely they can mount a real challenge to Obama in 2012. Yet, the presidential election of 2012 will be more than a simple coronation of Barack Obama if the economy stalls and there is no progress in two important areas: national security and healthcare.

Ballooning deficits and a sluggish economy could alter the mood of America by the time the 2010 mid-terms come up, giving hope to the GOP for the next presidential primary season. This is why Sarah Palin is maintaining a persistent media presence, whether it is debating David Letterman or being the biggest Republican draw on the lecture circuit. She clearly has her eyes set on the presidency and her decision to step down as governor of Alaska later this month will only heighten the interest in her political ambitions.

The latest edition of Vanity Fair brings this possibility forward, though not in a favourable light. Journalist Todd Purdhom paints a picture of a woman with a narcissistic personality, who’s short on knowledge, disinterested in policy discussion, and not ready for primetime. In the end, the story says more about John McCain’s competence and character than it does about Palin, simply because he flubbed his most important decision as a presidential candidate. That said, Palin brought much needed energy to an otherwise lackluster campaign and, to this day, she energizes the base as no other candidate can. Could it be possible she may someday be a candidate for the presidency?

My experience tells me that no one should be written off in a hypothetical context. Barack Obama is proof positive of this. I still maintain that, without Bush, there is no Obama nomination. Palin is a street smart politician who has benefited from being underestimated most of her career. McCain’s disastrous choice may have been fatal to his electoral chances, but it brought Palin to the forefront of national attention. Since then, she has become a celebrity that transcends her party. However, if she is to be taken seriously and considered a viable contender, she needs to change the negative perceptions of her and develop a political profile that appeals to those outside her narrow base.

To do this, she must gradually reduce her exposure and begin to educate herself on the issues. She will not be ready for 2012 by remaining governor of Alaska and playing the celebrity. The GOP has too proud a tradition to have a re-run of the 2008 vice-presidential candidate. Also, the base Palin relies on for support no longer holds the sway it once did. Social conservatism is losing steam as a political movement thanks to the dubious habits of people like Gingrich, Ensign and Sanford, and the election of an African-American president as well as the increased attention paid to gay rights issues shows that Americans have begun to cast their old divisions aside. The future for the GOP lies with fiscal conservatism and strong national security policy—not with turning back the clock. Palin must embrace the values that created the Republican party in the first place—a belief in the individual, a belief in a limited role for the state, and a commitment to equality. The party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and (the pragmatic version of) Reagan is the path to a Republican resurgence. Palin is nowhere on that radar. She is all about celebrity status and controversy.

In the lead-up to July 4, Americans usually reflect on their great democracy. Overall, it is healthy and has shown resilience through the decades. But the Republicans have to become a viable alternative for this democracy to remain vibrant. So is Palin a real possibility for 2012 or 2016? Will she someday be a formal candidate for the presidency? Most definitely. But can she ever win? Based on what we have observed so far, I would say definitely not, though politics has been known to produce some strange developments.

You are prescient. She just announced that ashe will resign as Governor before her term is over. You might be right.

She is done now….no one likes a quitter. She ended u with the expeirence of just a couple years as a Governor with much of that time running for National office or as a National celebrity. No accomplishments and ends up quitting. There has to be another shoe to drop here and it isn't her announcement to run for President.

Ms Palin's inability to sniff out this prank is painful – you actually start to feel sorry for her.

Why not Newt Gingrich? For the six years he controlled Congress, it was the only time in the previous four decades when government spending was under control.

Those on this thread who think Palin's unelectable, fine. Reasonable opinion.

However, it's all too common to see leftists going after Palin on a personal level. In particular, lines like this "It takes a village to produce an idiot" and this "Never go full retard" are striking. Symptomatic of the Left's hatred, I suppose, but since she's clearly very bright, are they also barely concealed insults directed at her mentally retarded son?

As a more blatant example, this was recently posted at leftist hotbed the Huffington Post by writer Erik Nelson:

"In Sarah Palin's resignation announcement she complained about the treatment of her son Trig who always teaches her life lessons. She said that the "world needs more Trigs, not fewer." That's a presidential campaign promise we can all get behind. She will be the first politician to actually try to increase the population of retarded people. To me, it's kinda like saying the world needs more cancer patients because they teach us such personal lessons.
Her first act as President: To introduce a Pre-K lunch buffet that includes lead paint chips. Sort of a Large HEAD-START Program.
She will then encourage women to hold off on pregnancies until their 40's just to mix up some chromosomes.
She now is in favor of abortion only in case of diploid birth.
Her policies will increase jobs because Wal-Mart is building new stores each day and someone has to be the greeter.
This will lead to smaller government because fewer Americans will have the cognitive ability to hold a government job.
Look, she says she's resigning as governor because people are making attacks on her and Trig. If she ever did become president, all Osama bin Laden would have to do to defeat the United States is Photoshop a picture of Trig and she'd surrender the country that night. As she said, "That's not politics as usual." It isn't. Politicians don't usually quit for so stupid of reasons."

What the hell is wrong with you people?

She's clearly very bright….. try watching the post above where she gets pranked by 2 DJs.
True, anyone can get caught in a gag, but she does not catch on at all…… at all

Personal insults can be avoided by assessing her ability to actually do the job – and friend – if you want this woman to be President, then I worry about the future of the USA

      • john g

Danby, did you even read the diatribe above? Personal insults are one thing…taking shots at infants with Down's Syndrome takes a special kind of nasty.

There is a difference between wanting her to be president and wanting her and her family to be treated with a modicum of the basic respect that's owed to any human being. I don't think she's presidential material (yet), but that doesn't mean pepole should be making jokes about her underage kids getting knocked up, or taking shots at an infant with Down's Syndrome. If we can't even agree on that, then there really is no hope for political discourse.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Jack_Mitchell Jack Mitchell

Once again she has cited the oh-so-cruel attacks on her family as a motive for her actions; but actually it is now clear that she is going to be preparing her 2012 presidential bid. So once again she has used her family as a prop. She gives them no respect — probably couldn't, since she is plainly so self-absorbed — so the blame-game starts with her, if we care to play it.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Jack_Mitchell Jack Mitchell

Gaunilon, "Never go full retard" was not a reference to her handicapped son but to herself, as you might have guessed by clicking on the link I provided to her Couric interview before attacking my good faith. Personally I find it disgusting how the anti-abortion crowd is so eager to slobber all over the poor child, as though they were happy he was born handicapped — gives them a reason to "celebrate life," after all. Can't we just leave infants out of politics? And I don't mean you.

    • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/Jack_Mitchell Jack Mitchell

Gaunilon, "Never go full retard" (from "Tropic Thunder") was not a reference to her handicapped son but to herself, as you might have guessed by clicking on the link I provided to her Couric interview before attacking my good faith. Personally I find it disgusting how the anti-abortion crowd is so eager to slobber all over the poor child, as though they were happy he was born handicapped — gives them a reason to "celebrate life," after all. As to taking "village idiot" as a reference to him, don't you see that willfully misreading my intent is itself a rhetorical exploitation of a mentally handicapped person? Hypocrisy, thy name is Gaunilon.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Gaunilon Gaunilon

If that was a misread of your intentions then well and good, since it holds promise that you aren't as vicious as at least one writer at HuffPo. The regularity of the retard references in this thread did not seem coincidental, but perhaps it's just the epithet requiring the least creativity.

As to it being a wilfull misreading, that is what one might call "attacking my good faith" if one were the hypocritical sort. I leave it to you to draw the obvious conclusion here.

And as to the anti-abortion crowd (interesting that you bring up abortion as soon as one mentions a mentally handicapped child, isn't it?) we're just happy she didn't kill the kid as 90% of Canadian women would on receiving the prenatal diagnosis. Free choice, you know. My body my temple. His body, still my temple. In that, at least, Palin has shown herself to be considerably less self-absorbed than most.

You're like a case study in fanaticism (which incidentally God doesn't like and may punish you severely for in the afterlife). The reason there are so many references to mental deficiency here is that we're talking about Sarah Palin, who has an IQ of 90. Grow up.

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/Crit_Reasoning Crit_Reasoning

Where did you hear that her IQ was 90?

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/Jack_Mitchell Jack Mitchell

Oh, sorry, I may be misusing the term; I thought 100 was average, but a little googling ("Sarah Palin", "IQ of 90") tells me people are congratulating Palin on having an IQ of 90. I meant to imply she was dumb as a Shih Tzu.

        • ScottsdaleMN

Is it such an admirable choice to have a mentally-challenged child while you are making your way to the the White House? What time does she think she can devote to her beloved son if she is planning on running for President? There is nothing wrong with choosing to end a pregnancy when you know you will not be able to sufficiently care for your child as you have 4 others ( and a 16 year old who is pregnant) and you are trying to make a political career for yourself. It is pretty deplorable that you choose to have the child, use it as a political advantage, and then what, place it in the hands of a nanny to raise while you run the country? ( It's not like Todd would step up)

      • john g

as you might have guessed by clicking on the link I provided to her Couric interview before attacking my good faith.

Your good faith? That's a pile of bullsh!t Jack. You are the one who on a previous thread stated that the Palin children deserve everything that has been thrown at them "because of who their mother is", so your moral righteousness rings rather hollow. You don't seem to have any problem with someone attacking a child with Downs Syndrome in the manner that was described above, so long as that child belongs to Sarah Palin. You've demonstrated your clear contempt for the Conservatives for their disrespect of Parliament, etc, but even they haven't stopped to attacking the special needs children of their opponents. That requires a special kind of nasty; but of course you wouldn't know or care anything about that.

And for your information, Palin has not cited any reason for why she quit politics yet, so enough of your lies.

  • janet

Seriously – palin for president? why don't they just hang a bullseye in the centre of the USA and say "bomb us, please"!
She has the IQ of an iceberg — one that would sink the US into the depths of hell .. and take the rest of the free world with her

Have we not already seen what religious idiology has done to the USA over the last 8 years? Do we need to see someone even more fundamentally insane running our nearest NUCLEAR EQUIPPED neighbour?

Sarah Palin could step up to a podium and literally gobble like a turkey – which is pretty much what that "resignation" speech was – and her supporters on the far right would still be declaring her the next Ronald Reagan. By all means – run Sarah Palin for President in 2012. Go for it. What an absolutely great idea.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/WernerPatels WernerPatels

You've got to admire Palin for her steadfast commitment to conservative principles and values. But being a political leader takes a lot more than commitment; it also requires a high IQ and an educated mind. Sadly, the deficits regarding the latter are what's holding her back and will ultimately prevent her from achieving her goals.

    • RightON

Truth be told, if she retired from the public eye for 2 years and educated herself, she might be able to make somethign of herself. But alas, she is too busy attacking David Letterman to make herself a more legitimate candidate.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Wally65 Wally65

That Sarah could get a crowd of true-believers to chant "Drill, baby, drill!" brings to mind images of Munich in the 1930's.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Gaunilon Gaunilon

I don't remember Hitler's fans clamoring to drill for oil in Alaska. Or perhaps you mean that any chanting at a rally is inherently Nazi. I invite you to go and say that at the next union rally, pro-Obama rally, or Code Pink rally you attend.

In the field and arena of organizational psychology there is "contrast effect or bias". In essence when other candidates are so very poor that they cannot succeed then the other remaining candidate (Sarah Palin) takes on an enormous and inflated personal presence that is much larger than reality and they (she) actually begin to believe in an unrealistic expectation of becoming President of the US.

She does it well but unfortunately (for theRepublicans) or fortunately (for the Democrats) this leads to the further personal unrealistic expectation that she is viable and can beat Obama at jogging (as she challenged yesterday) or as President.

The more she engages in this self-fulfilling fantasy that only she truly believes, the closer the Republicans in 2012 will begin to "dust off" Romney or Huckabee or even a rehabilitated Mark Sanford. Palin is a loose cannon not "street smart" enough or intellectually astute enough to "dishonestly" know and admit what she "honestly" does not know! .She cannot resist hogging the headlines even negatively because it is very clear that is how she is illogically & irrationally programmed (DNA) to self-destruct. These are not Presidential characteristis or qualities. Not to worry.

If Sarah's going to run for president in 2012 who is the power behind her sought after throne? Surely she can't run on ego alone.
