UPDATED: And now for something completely different: Republicans for Voldemort Ignatieff

by kadyomalley on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 11:53am - 34 Comments

ITQ suspects that the mischievous minds behind this site were inspired, at least in part, by an adorably subversive memepaign that surfaced during the 2004 election, but that doesn’t make it any less entertaining.

The big question, of course, is who’s responsible. Is it those irrepressible imps at the Little Shop of Tories? Disgruntled lefty Liberals? Non-earnest New Democrats? Post your thoughts in the comments!

Note: Menu navigation seems a mite wonky this morning, probably due to the fact that the main page has been temporarily diverted to a teaser for an upcoming news release that promises “exciting new information” about the Liberal leader.

UPDATE: A little bird — no, not a Sparrow — points out, by email, that R4I “is hosted by NearlyFreeSpeech.net of Cocoa Beach, Florida” — which is “the same server that hosts Canadians4Democracy.ca (the anti-coalition website put up by Stephen Taylor last December).”

Intriguing! But ITQ is not yet persuaded that this isn’t a subtle jab from the left, mostly because of the emphasis on Ignatieff’s unabashed love for the Alberta tar sands — “tar sands”, mind you, not “oil sands”; the former being most often used by opponents thereto, and the latter by supporters.

Voldemort? Really? At least Ignatieff doesn't use his time to desecrate whole religions unlike another leader we all know and res…well…really, how many people actually respect the PMO these days? Our government is a walking joke.

  • Jason

Conservatives. Definitely Conservatives. No way you'd see a Dipper being so subtle OR praising Harper the way this thing does.

    • Stephen

      I disagree.

No Conservative would offer even a hint of criticism of Ignatieff for "not losing sleep" over an Israeli bombing campaign.

      • http://liberalvideodepot.blogspot.com Ted

They would if it would drive urban Liberal votes to the NDP.

  • John D

Yeah, my call is this is Tories pretending to be lefties parodying Republicans. However if that's true it's the most creative thing the Tories have done so far. Bravo.

    • J.P.

I don't know. I think it could also have been left-leaning Liberals softening up Ignatieff. Remember that guy who wrote a scathing piece in the Guardian a couple months back? Didn't he turn out to be a Bob Rae supporter?

  • Torontonian

Thursday June 9? Don't they mean July?

    Can't they get anything right?

    • Ian

They must have meant July. There is some audio taken from a speech where Ignatieff slobbers all over Bush up there now.

If it wasn't such nasty Republican-style way to attack your opponent, I'd say this was the NDP's doing.

If it was the Tories who did this, they managed to be subtler and funnier than their previous efforts.

    • CAPS

That's probably because Sparrow has flown the coop.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/sea_n_mountains sea_n_mountains

that wasn't an overly high bar to pass.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JPro JPro

    *sigh*

    The moronic game-playing continues.

It's not as if there are serious issues to deal with is there?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/OntarioTown OntarioTown

So, our tolerance has now gone down to misleading and lies is funny, humourous and clever?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Nich Nich

The Conservatives either need to do things like this or govern Canada.

I feel safer knowing they are doing things like this and not trying to govern.

  • Wayne

I just had a little liberal bird whisper to me that it was former Dion enthusiasts — do tell :)

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/OntarioTown OntarioTown

Was it a "blue" bird pretending to be a Liberal?

    • Jon Pertwee

Yeah right, it smacks of the cookie cutter web design of Stephen Taylor. Nice try Wayne but I doubt there are too many liberal birds on your farm.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Crit_Reasoning Crit_Reasoning

In this case, one or two guys probably put the site together in a few hours. It's not exactly loaded with content.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Nich Nich

But what if they were the only two guys who were focused on governing Canada?

  • Mike

    Tories.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/hardmouth hardmouth

This website is great!!! ahhahahah… I have to disagree about its subtlety though….. in my mind this part here really clenches it as being a conservative party effort:

"Although the current Canadian Prime Minister is a conservative, he has challenged the United States on the Arctic, he is charting Canada's own course in the Americas, and he has failed to demonstrate a deep emotional connection to America like Michael Ignatieff."

    • John D

      bingo

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Harbles Harbles

Whois refers to Proxy server Respectmyprivacy.com P.O. box # in Cocoa, Florida.
Whoever it is they don't want you to know. Tells you all you need to know about their legitimacy.

      Oops!

      Note to new media.

I support individual bloggers and commenter's right to privacy and anonymity .
However if a website presents itself as a political action organization soliciting contributions and personal information then disclosure of the principals involved must be required.
      IMHO of course.

  • Martin Partridge

I can't wait for the upcoming announcement promised for "Thursday, June 9th". What year, I wonder?

  • Dakota

Ouch! The truth must sting all the Lib-Left anti-Americans in the Liberal party to make them turn on their own like this.

  • Secrest

Anyone with half of a brain knows its Stephen Taylor, but theres no way to prove it.

  • Mulletaur

It's a little too clever for the Little Shop of Tories, Stephen Taylor would be my guess too.

It is possible to love Yankees and Yankeeland without liking their government particularly much and while being very critical of their domestic and particularly foreign policies. It's pretty difficult to encapsulate that message in a soundbite much less get people to live with the apparent contradiction : 'We love them, even when they're wrong !' is my best effort.

  • Observant

It's the Liberal Left preparing to overthrow rabid right winger Iggy….and install Bob Rae as the rightful ruler of the Liberal party and The One to Unite the Left. The Liberal grassroots members are ready to revolt against interloper Iggy, and he may not be Liberal leader come this September when the HoCs reconvenes….having gone back to Harvard for the fall semester. Also interesting to note that Dion is still hanging around for the inevitable fireworks to undoubtedly add his support to Bob Rae – a true Canadian.

Get off the excess caffeine, quickly. You Conservative supporters look unhinged enough normally as it is without extra stimulants in your system.

  • Anonymous

Possibly the most insidious thing about the website is that it's trying to harvest names and email addresses without identifying who's behind the site.

Are the Conservatives trying to buttress their database with more names of people not to contact, or to whom they can send spoof "information" about their opponents?

  • Calgary Junkie

    I want my … I want my … I want my …pooping puffins.

  • Big Winnie

I find it amusing that they are using an American company to host the web site…Too afraid to have it hosted in Canada?

  • http://thefishshow.com/Archive/WMUM.htm Walter Joseph Kovacs

Gotta be a Con attack ad, which makes it way more funnier than if it had come from anywhere on the left.
"Don't vote for this guy, he's even more like us than we are.
    And you don't want that."
