Pride just keeps on goeth-ing, huh? – Diane Ablonczy vs. the Anonymous Conservative Source Chorus!

by kadyomalley on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 11:33am - 19 Comments

Guess what? Apparently, it’s the media’s fault that poor Diane Ablonczy got her knuckles rapped. Somehow, I just knew that ultimately, it would turn out that we were to blame.  Today’s Toronto Star reports that, according to various unnamed Tories, it may have been a photo of the minister on stage with a troupe of burly burlesque dancers that pushed PMO over the edge:

Sources said the Pride Week grant sparked a crisis at the highest levels of the Harper government.
“It was seen as a poke in the eye” to social conservatives, said one senior insider, noting the Prime Minister is wary of alienating a key part of his base. [...]

Ablonczy, the MP for Calgary-Nose Hill who famously introduced Harper to his wife, Laureen, was reportedly so impressed by Pride’s “polished and professional” application that she insisted on coming to Toronto to present the cheque in person. A Conservative source said it was the media coverage that prompted the backlash against Ablonczy.

“The TV shots of her with transvestites inflamed some people,” the source said.

Another Tory insider agreed the sight of drag queens with the minister caused Ablonczy “big-time” trouble because she had not cleared her attendance at the event with Harper’s office.

So, let me get this straight: it’s okay — or, at least, not a firing offence — for the government to give money to a gay pride parade  – just don’t get caught doing so on camera?

Really, it’s becoming almost impossible to piece together what actually happened here. Did Diane Ablonczy really lose signing authority over her sponsorship-is-such-a-loaded-word slush fund simply because she showed up on stage with a couple of drag queens? Or is that just what PMO types are quietly telling cranky caucus so-cons to stave off a mini-mutiny in the furthest reaches of the backbench?

It’s hard — no, let’s face it, it’s impossible — to imagine that any minister — especially a junior mint like Ablonczy — would swan off to Toronto for what she probably thought would turn out to be a good news announcement without getting the go-ahead from one of Guy Giorno’s minions. Even — or perhaps especially — considering that the announcement took place at the height of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it standoff over the main estimates, of which the stimulus package — including the Marquee Tourism Event Program — was part and parcel.

Remember what a big deal the Conservatives made over all that taxpayer money that was in danger of disappearing if the estimates didn’t make it through the House — PMO even included MTEP in the list of programs at risk provided to Canadian Press. Someone at Langevin would have presumably been making calls to ministers’ office to get more talking point fodder. Any imminent funding announcement, especially one likely to garner media attention, would have made the PMO watchlist — what better way to shame the Liberals into supporting the estimates, after all, than to accuse them of plotting to starve the summer festival circuit of much-needed cash?

The most plausible explanation, then, is that the prospect of a public display of federal support for Pride Toronto didn’t raise a single red flag – or eyebrow – at PMO at the time, and any “big-time trouble” would have originated far below the “highest levels” of the Harper government. Yet someone — maybe, but not necessarily, someone ostensibly in the know — apparently told Trost — and possibly others — that the news came as a shock to “most of PMO”, presumably in an effort to — o, irony — prevent him from grumbling about the grant in public. Which didn’t quite work out as well as he/she/they had hoped, really.

Oh, and before I forget, Colleague Raphael wants ITQ to remind y’all that this isn’t the first time that LifeSite has caused consternation for a Conservative cabinet minister. Back in June, the self-described “life, family and community outpost” accused Jim Flaherty of “[expressing] support for [the] homosexual agenda” after the minister sent a congratulatory letter to his former campaign chair, Conservative strategist Jaime Watt, who was recently feted by EGALE Canada for his “outstanding contribution to LGBT human rights in Canada”. (Watt, that is, not Flaherty — ITQ doesn’t want to get him in even more trouble.)

It's ok if those gays want to be gay and all, but do they have to be so PUBLIC about it? Having their parades, getting their pictures taken, becoming Conservative MPs – stop rubbing it in our faces people!

    • Char R

Yes. The nerve of those gays. How dare they be as PUBLIC as heteros. They should all stay indoors and not venture outside at all. We'd gladly spend our tax money to keep them at home, holding hands there. Well, wouldn't we?

      • Stephen

The spirit of Elsie Wayne is alive and well in the Conservative Party of Canada.

“The TV shots of her with transvestites inflamed some people,” the source said.

The horrors! A cabinet minister with some Canadians on TV!!? I'm sure the PMO handbook says they should only be on TV with professional actors who are paid to look like the type of Canadians that MPs are paid to represent. Or something like that.

Well it is no surprise who pulls the strings with this government. Since that is the reality, it is good to see it getting some press.

  • Dot

It's not the size of the cheque, but what you do with it.

  • Darrell

I'm surprised they didn't go with the she didn't realize they were drag queens defence.

    It could happen!

Politics is a dog eat dog world, after all.

And let Colleague Raphael know that he can take pics of every single Conservative Minister at Gay Galas and that won't change the fact that their core supporters remain anti-gay. As for that "outstanding contribution", Watt received it for pushing through legislation that was mandated by the courts. That award marked the end of EGALE's credibility in the eyes of most gay people across Canada.

I don't understand why the Conservatives jumped to react to the complaints of the socially conservative? They need votes, and there is a lot more potential to offend non socially conservative Canadians such as myself than there is to loose votes of so-cons.

Now that this story is out there, they are going to have to contort themselves in all kinds of ways to appease the far right, while not appearing to everyone else to not be too far right themselves.

They need votes, and there is a lot more potential to offend non socially conservative Canadians such as myself than there is to loose votes of so-cons.

The so-cons can shut up any sensible Conservative who might be on the crest of initiating a sensible conversation about the future of the Party. The sensible Conservatives are scared to death of them and what they might do, especially since the so-cons really do believe the untruths they spout without hesitation.

      • M to the T

agreed! time to stand up to the bullies and their financially and socially damaging nonsense.

      • OctoberInJuly

But the question is: Why? Who else are so-cons going to vote for?

It just seems that the Conservatives can treat their so-con supporters like the Liberals treated ethnic voters for so long; lip service during elections, and little concrete action the rest of the time. I just can't see the Conservatives suddenly bleeding votes just because of giving money to pride parades.

        • matt

I dropped a comment in the Wells thread saying the same thing. If the PMO told all he So-Cons to go eff themselves, not one seat would likely change hands. On the other hand being seen as more inclusive with swing voters in Ontario will help in a few places. It appears they have a great deal more power than they should, therefore i will be unlikely to renew my membership at the end of the year.

Wow. Living in Toronto must be like living in a bubble because I can't even fathom why being photographed with transvestites is an issue. I don't understand all this anti-queer activism going on either. Aren't there more pressing concerns for family-minded, socially conservative, Christian Westerners? Like all that crystal meth use that goes on in small, rural towns?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/NotStephen Not Stephen Colbert

There are no more pressing concerns. Those queers are icky, and we heteros have a God-given right not to feel icky!

  • M to the T

damn I always knew drag queens were one of the harbinger's of the Apocalypse.

Pete – the Christian Dominionists are in full frak out over rights to gays – they assume gay sex and Cannabis are threats to their beliefs and NEED to find a way to roll back gay or as I call it, biological rights.

Time for the news media to drive a sake into the dark heart of superstitious belief and stop holding hands with these troglodytes – sometimes there are no two sides to an issue – just made vainglorious fantasy (religion) and reality .

The photo of the cheque hand-off shown in the Star is dated June 15. Did these photos or footage appear — showing the minister — in some media outlets popular amongst the social conservative set? If so, which ones? Was it the photos/"TV shots" that set this off? Is this true, or just after-the-fact spin by unnamed insiders and speculators?

Or, as seems to be the assumption, was the minister's transgression that she attended to a stimulus photo-op without the permission of the PMO? If so, this whole broohaha says more about the internecine conflicts of the CPC than it does about a bunch of throw-back trogs and their bigotries.

Harpie could clear this up easily. Simply issue a statement that the rumours are all misconceived; that this government's agenda is not run according to desires of socially conservative interests.

"The most plausible explanation, then, is that the prospect of a public display of federal support for Pride Toronto didn’t raise a single red flag – or eyebrow – at PMO at the time…"

I dunno, although I am trying really hard, I am not sure it I find it all that plausible.

    1) This government has gone to such extraordinary lengths to control messaging, with an impressive (though scary) degree of control, that i can't believe that no one in PMO took the time to troubleshoot the implications of 'supporting pride'.

    2) That SH refused to start his gov with a re-vote on outlawing gay marriage was seen as a massive concession; to then toss money at this 'parade' (recognizing for the sake of LKO's sanity, that money did not go tot he parade, though obviously that distinction is being lost on most people) seems to me, too big a misstep.
