Let's imagine for a second Maureen; if society didn't support child rearing in any way,
-what would the birthrate be today?
-what levels of education would the children have?
-how many women would be in the workforce?
-how many women would be on antidepressants?
-who would be supporting the pensions?

Sounds to me like there would be an even larger gap between the have's and have-nots.

Now, imagine what would happen if more women could go to school and work if daycare was more accessible?

The comments by Evans are elitist as hell and even a neo-con government wouldn't want to admit that.

I don't think Iris Evans stated anything stupid – I need to hear politicians opinions rather than a party line. That creates a vibrant and useful debate, rather than the leftist view of debate which is usually 'shut and sit down because you are too ignorant to have an opinion, particularly if it different than mine' or 'the debate is over'. All Evans did was state the obvious, that if you want to have parents, you might need to make some changes in your life rather than expect society to make changes for you so that you can keep your lifestyle options open. As adults we have to make choices everyday and a decision to have a child is one of the biggest choices you will ever make and it goes way beyond day care provided by the state. If that is you reason to have children, then I suspect you will be very poor parent since you will expect everyone along with every government to provide for your every need, wants and desires.

Although there is unquestionably a point regarding the HRCs, Steyn, in typical form, slaughters his own credibility by massively overstating his case. Why lead with Iris Evans? She said something stupid, people were upset, there was public pressure to apologize, she caved to pressure. Where enter the thought police? She wasn't thrown in jail. She was ridiculed. Appropriately. If a Liberal politician in power made disparaging remarks about (say) Christians, conservatives would complain loudly, and that politician would eventually apologize. We have a right to offend, but we also have a right to be offended.

Unfortunately, Steyn has fallen in love with the idea that he is the hero of an underground war with a fascist state, resigned to eventually ending up in the dreaded Room 101. Fascinating to me that the participants in this movement which emerged as a reaction against 'White Liberal Guilt' have turned into the most pathetic professional victims around.

Makes one wonder what ever happened to the gray areas of debate. You know, the ground that once existed between absolute rights and wrongs. It's bad enough when students must write reports supporting teachers opinions to receive top grades but not being able to express a dissenting opinion without risk of legal action is bizarre.
Governments have already moved towards pro and con stances only; heaven help us if the Supreme Court should ever become such mindlessness.

It's also worth noting that there's no statutory penalty for an Alberta Minister saying something stupid (the province could run itself on the revenue!), the party leader is just exercising their discretion to get rid of them when they act poorly. Even if you dislike HRCs on ideological grounds it wasn't a great comparator to start with.
