The CHRC justifies it thus:

“In the debate about freedom of expression and freedom from hate, Canada’s commitment to equality lies at the centre.”

The CHRC lies at the left, lies at the centre and lies at the right. It lies at the rising of the sun and at its going down.
It lies when awake and when asleep. When it's not lying, it's obfuscating, or making up new rules as it goes along.

Would George Orwell be proud of Major Lynch!
We are all equal before the Charter of Rights and Freedoms,
as we were already, post Magna Carta.
When Commissar Major Lynch pontificates, some (CHRC et al) are promoted above the CRF,
while others are demoted.
She should be promoted to Mary Robinson's old job, the better to bash the Jews.
while others are demoted

I see Mitchell and his Mitchelletes are still obsessing compulsively on Steyn's every word and using Juvenile Limericks as their outlet.Mitchell reminds me of a high school English teacher where criticizing becomes more important than doing.

Are you serious? Have you ever read anything by Steyn? I find it so refreshing to finally find a columnist with genuine integrity.

Again I ask, How many pro-Steyne's commenting here are from a minority group? I challenge you to respond.

Or, how many are mothers who have struggled with balancing childbearing and careers? And who may have totally agreed that any elected official should be fired for wearing a designer pink suit and speaking to us in a condescending manner about our inappropriate priorities? Sorry all, that has nothing to do with freedom of expression!

Who says Ceeger is a 'he'? Another assumption, perhaps? And relayed in absolute, satraight-faced dogmatic fashion by a lefty who, of course, knows better than the person actually making the comment.
Male or female? Black or White? You don't know ... but I look forward to you telling me that you do. As obfuscating Liberals are wont to do!

Obviously I meant that my responses were witty and his were dull. And I was hardly bickering or whining, "Eric," I was remarking on the obvious, that Steyn has written this column five times before. If a pesky little blogger insults me, I smite him. Learn to use the "Reply" things, by the way, it only takes a moment.

Let's be clear on one thing Jack. You cannot outclass anyone by bickering and whining in the comments section of a website. Its kind of pathetic to think you could, really.

There once was a writer name Steyn,
'Bout whom many enjoyed to opine.
They proclaimed him a bigot,
Demanded censored, his spigot.
And proved, as with brains, they are lacking a spine.

Let's imagine for a second Maureen; if society didn't support child rearing in any way,
-what would the birthrate be today?
-what levels of education would the children have?
-how many women would be in the workforce?
-how many women would be on antidepressants?
-who would be supporting the pensions?

Sounds to me like there would be an even larger gap between the have's and have-nots.

Now, imagine what would happen if more women could go to school and work if daycare was more accessible?

The comments by Evans are elitist as hell and even a neo-con government wouldn't want to admit that.

Do you think it is a second step farther to forcefully impregnate "good ideas", i.e. ideas "we" think are good, the minds of "our" unsuspecting young people? That is Education in Canada, quite literally.

Can't disagree there Ex-Grunt.

Steyn has made MacLeans into a weekly well worth subscribing to - have now renewed my subscription.

He has an inate ability to cut to the chase and reflect what ordinary americans and Canadians actually think and believe.

Several bloggers like The Blazing Cat Fur, Jay Currie and Ezra Levant provide more insight into politics than canwest ever did.

Ya, that's a rich argument from Lynch...the Government scared of some complaining citizens? Consider withholding your taxes due to some grievance and see how scared they are! They (bureaucrats) can smack you down and terrorize with the best, including the quasi-judicial HRC's.....I'm guessing she is more intimidated by the truth getting out, and the eventual citizen support for her positions abolishment...
One of Steyn's best offerings....

Hey Anon,

Anon here to comment to the original Anon.

Mark wasn't suggesting he was personally impecunious. He suggested the bloggers are... Steyn and Levant have jobs and money and can afford to fight a very well-funded bureaucracy. Most bloggers, on the other hand, do not have this option.

Yours truly,

Anon

Except ,mordenm, there are many who agree with Iris. Sad that she caved. Does that make me a stay at home mom? Not even close. I'm a small business owner that works waaaay too many hours. Still, the truth is the truth, even if it hurts.,There are more than enough case study psycology books stating the fact. Does it make me feel guilty and resentful? Yeah. Pretty sh8tty. Truth doesn't change just because I don't like it.

I don't think Iris Evans stated anything stupid - I need to hear politicians opinions rather than a party line. That creates a vibrant and useful debate, rather than the leftist view of debate which is usually 'shut and sit down because you are too ignorant to have an opinion, particularly if it different than mine' or 'the debate is over'. All Evans did was state the obvious, that if you want to have parents, you might need to make some changes in your life rather than expect society to make changes for you so that you can keep your lifestyle options open. As adults we have to make choices everyday and a decision to have a child is one of the biggest choices you will ever make and it goes way beyond day care provided by the state. If that is you reason to have children, then I suspect you will be very poor parent since you will expect everyone along with every government to provide for your every need, wants and desires.

This is the type of sexist bunk that pretends to be feminist thought. There are lots of options for daycare and they should be equally supported by the state or none supported by the state. Gee, parents might need to do some thinking before they have children on the impact that having a child or several children might have on their lives rather than pretending that creating another human being should have no impact on your lifestyle.

Although there is unquestionably a point regarding the HRCs, Steyn, in typical form, slaughters his own credibility by massively overstating his case. Why lead with Iris Evans? She said something stupid, people were upset, there was public pressure to apologize, she caved to pressure. Where enter the thought police? She wasn't thrown in jail. She was ridiculed. Appropriately. If a Liberal politician in power made disparaging remarks about (say) Christians, conservatives would complain loudly, and that politician would eventually apologize. We have a right to offend, but we also have a right to be offended.

Unfortunately, Steyn has fallen in love with the idea that he is the hero of an underground war with a fascist state, resigned to eventually ending up in the dreaded Room 101. Fascinating to me that the participants in this movement which emerged as a reaction against 'White Liberal Guilt' have turned into the most pathetic professional victims around.

I congratulate Mark Steyn on a fine piece of writing as he once again alerts Canadians to the dangers of elitism and how perilously close we are moving toward having government agents define what Canadians can and can’t discuss.

Lib-Leftists are not interested in debate. If someone has a view that they feel goes against the political correct Gestapo they wail and rant and accuse the person of being some sort of racist, bigot, or ignoramus.

Although they claim to be the enlightened people, Lib-Leftists are basically spoiled children who clutch their politically correct comfort blanket to feel all safe and warm.

The Cats back - Jack step back - he never left, what are you dumb or just deaf

Makes one wonder what ever happened to the gray areas of debate. You know, the ground that once existed between absolute rights and wrongs. It's bad enough when students must write reports supporting teachers opinions to receive top grades but not being able to express a dissenting opinion without risk of legal action is bizarre.
Governments have already moved towards pro and con stances only; heaven help us if the Supreme Court should ever become such mindlessness.

Steyn's world, the banner's unfurled
The maple leaf or, what, Stars & Stripes, or pipes of reefer,
Ezra's in the bedroom, smells like perfume, he's got the zoom-zoom-zoom
Tonight, it's all right, five inches of purry fury, it's quite a sight
The blazing's cat's back, witless, wish he were titless, a sad sack, he's got the knack, it's wacked
In Steyn's world, oh wait I just hurled.

Very nice indeed!

There once was a writer named Steyn,
Whom some took for a judge of good wine;
But when shown the bouquet
Of a soft Chardonnay,
He squeaked, "No, not wine, damn you! I whine!"

My mistake Jack you described yourself as "not leftwing", I assumed as did Ceeger that you were implying that you were in fact right wing. I'll take you at your word.

I suspect your version of centrism has some mighty left leaning goal posts however. Based on your behavior both here and at my blog I'd say the rest of Ceegers assessment is quite accurate.

Great stuff, Jack! I can't believe so many people waste money on Macleans subscriptions in order to read the on-staff dullards and Grub Street mediocrities, when so much pith and wit can be had here for free.

I've been winding down from a hard day (a hard few weeks, actually), and you've put a smile on my face here and on other threads. Thanks for that.

Ah, you're back! And making more sense than ever. 'Ceptin' that I never described myself as right wing . . . Hmm . . . And Ceegar is new here, so he's not really a student of my oeuvre. Well, 0-2 but that's still a major improvement.

If I may

There once was a writer named Steyn
Whose musings were close to the line
'Twixt ignorance and hate
But after some debate
To the BCHRC he's just fine

It's also worth noting that there's no statutory penalty for an Alberta Minister saying something stupid (the province could run itself on the revenue!), the party leader is just exercising their discretion to get rid of them when they act poorly. Even if you dislike HRCs on ideological grounds it wasn't a great comparator to start with.

Under the circumstances, professor Martin demonstrated remarkable forbearance. “That is a classic example of the kind of argumentative technique used by people who support the thought police,” he replied quietly. “I make a principled argument, sir, in favour of freedom of expression. I do not add any baggage to that argument.”

Professor Martin wondered why they didn’t just have the heretic burned at the stake.

I see Ceeger is correct in his observations of your past behavior on these boards Jacko. You really do create a new reality to suit the occasion. Before you were claiming to be "Right Wing" now you are claiming to be a "centrist".

I don't think you're leftwing, rightwing or a centrist, Jacko I think you're just "Off".
