Harper apologizes

by Aaron Wherry on Friday, July 10, 2009 11:50am - 92 Comments

Is this a first?

“During my press conference, I attacked Mr. Ignatieff for some things he had allegedly said about Canada and the G8,” Harper said. ”I learned shortly after the press conference this was not a quotation of Mr. Ignatieff. I regret the error and I apologize to Mr. Ignatieff for this error.”

All the Lib-Lefties are giggly today! Lots of patty cake and back patting. Don't get too giddy though, it'll be Ignatieff with his foot in his mouth soon enough. The man can't stand not being on the front page.

    • Sigh

      What are you, three?

    • Blammo

Iggy's laying low; political science rule #1; when your opponent is busy making a fool of himself, shut up and let 'em. (Just too bad every Canadian has to share the embarrassment……..)

    • catherine

Dakota, how can you not be embarassed like the people you call Lib-Lefties are? Our Prime Minister used the occasion of an international meeting to peddle dirt and smears. It was not only repeating a lie, but Harper went on and made conclusions about Ignatieff's character and commitment to Canada based on these lies? In other words, Harper threw himself into this dirty job. Don't you find that embarassing for Canada? What other leader behaved like this?

I am embarrassed! I am embarrassed for all the leaders of Canada's political parties. There isn't a single person worth voting for among the entire group and this is just another example of why I will be spoiling my ballet.

The sad fact is, you will continue to vote Lib-Left regardless of who it is you are voting for.

(BTW – I am a small "c" fiscal conservative and had high hopes for Martin, alas, he was such a let down.)

It's a good game to play, but can I offer you a word of advice? Making snarky comments about people wearing tinfoil hats doesn't really constitute playing Devil's Advocate.

Do you think the National News programs will replay the whole statement so everyone gets the full picture you have presented? As you suggest, the conclusions based on the lie give the full scope of smear on Ignatieff's character and commitment.
I think the media, except for Aaron and Kady, covers up for him all the time.

      • John W.

Will the National News programs give the full statement tonight? As Catherine says, it's not only the lie (or mistake?)about what Ignatieff said but the way he tried to use the gotcha moment. I think except for Aaron and kady, the national media cover up for him all the time.

Promises, Promises. Harper and co. set such a high standard of incompetence it is inconceivable anyone could ever aspire to equal them.

    • Dakota

Right…and he caused the global recession and engineered swine flu too. You Lib-Lefties are such a riot. These boards are like reading the comic section.

Keep the tin foil hat party rockin!

Only when members of CRAP (aka CPC) contribute. You got the right party name the first time.

"All the Lib-Lefties are giggly today! Lots of patty cake and back patting"

Believe you me, none of this is funny. It's embarrassing.

    QED

    • Dakota

Indeed, but you are assuming your conclusions are valid. I believe questioning the patriotism of a potential PM is valid.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/SeanStok SeanStok

You mean like someone who once advocated for the separation of Alberta from Canada? Or someone who called Canada a second-tier country, perhaps? Or someone who – as a sitting PM – deliberately lied to the Canadian people about the legal foundation of our parliamentary system? A man who makes himself more available to American media than Canadian journalists? Or maybe someone who weakened the Canadian federation by extending nation status to Quebec, perhaps swayed by his once dependence on a separatist party to prop up his minority rule?

See how petty and stupid that sounds? Nobody wins when we go around claiming that others have less Canadian blood in them. There's a long list of historical horrors that have relied on that sort of thinking, and I can't think of an instance where a pissing match of patriotism has done a nation any good.

        • Dakota

Now your talking…I do question Harper's patriotism on all the points you've made, but that does not lessen the questions of Ignatieff own patriotism.

Maybe I'm just too much of a nationalist, but I would rather have someone as PM (from any party) who had Canada's interests above their own, something I don't see in either Harper or Ignatieff.

Fact remains, shouldn't the PM be a patriot?

"I do question Harper's patriotism on all the points you've made"

I think you missed the part where SeanStok pointed out that this was petty and stupid.

What about the other side of this issue ? Here is what David Akin is reporting …

For the record, Ignatieff, in London, England, earlier this week, said something about Canada's presidency of the G8 that was remarkably similar to what the prime minister said. Here's Ignatieff:"Huntsville should be a plce where we will make substantial progress redefining and refocusing the G8 itself."

Any reporters at Maclean's want to pursue all of what Iggy said in London ?

  • Martin Levenson

This episode demonstrates PMSH's lack of statesmanship and a sense of propriety. I appreciate that he thought his audience was Canadians generally, but in fact he was speaking to other G8 leaders as well, washing his dirty linen in public. Unbelievable. I don't think the other leaders frankly care about his domestic issues, and I suspect they have more sense than to discuss theirs.

  • scf

It would be a first if Wherry apologized for any one of a number of inaccurate, misleading and hostile posts.

  • Mike T.

I quickly asked the other 29,999,999 Canadians, and none of them like your post.
