Should the federal government call a public inquiry into its handling of Suaad Hagi Mohamud’s detainment in Kenya?

if we continue 2 allow people 2 sue the Government– it will never end. We don't know the ins– & outs– of the situations at hand– so should let the Government do their job. After all- do we want terrorists 2 enter our country? times have changed– everyone might be suspect at one time–so has 2 be evaluated. Why do U think we live in a free country– lets keep it that way. While I think the cash demands are on the absurd side, an inquiry here is a given. A Canadian citizen was left abroad, not only without support from her government but seems to have even been partially persecuted by the government, with Canadian officials telling Kenyan officials to push for a criminal charge.

Even if she doesn't deserve the money, she certainly deserves an explanation, as does the public for how such an event could transpire to any Canadian citizen.

Cash grab. That's all it is. Yes, she was abandoned as a Canadian Citizen, but $2.5mil? Ridiculous. There should be some explanation and perhaps a small settlement, but to pay out this kind of money is absurd. It is, after all, taxpayer money that is going out the door. In case anyone wants to know, I am a naturalized Canadian and disagree with this kind of thing. Not acceptable.

funny, $2.5 million was the same amount as Stephen Harper's lawsuit against the Liberal party (until he raised it by and extra million).

Well, it begs the question.. what is being abandoned by your own country, spending 3 months in a foreign prison, unsure if / when you'll get out, and unsure if you are going to see your child again worth? I think that is worth quite a lot. So, as a born in Canada Canadian who is very bothered by the fact that our Gov't would abandon a citizen like that, I do think that 2.5 million is suitable for the pain she went through… and hopefully enough that the Gov't wouldn't be so complacent with it's own citizenry again in the future.

And why did her passport photo look like one of the Dead Sea scrolls?

Has there been any comparision of her passport photo and her current appearance?

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/JustinWordswrth JustinWordswrth

Comparison? The photo looked like Cy Young's rookie card had been folded into a paper crane, stored in a sauna for a century, then been removed, unfolded, and ironed flat.

The only people who should be allowed into Canada with documentation that looks that ancient should be travelling in a Delorean.

What about the 7 other pieces of ID that she had? Surely that would qualify her for a trip to the slammer.

I'm really confused by the opposition to a public inquiry. I certainly understand not wanting to give her any money, but an inquiry is meant to find out what happened – if there was no wrong-doing and the detainment was justified based on data available at the time, then that's all we'll find out.

Is there really this big of a movement to support continued ignorance over the matter?

How someone with a passport and 7 other pieces of ID can not get into the country is disgraceful. I think that the $2.5 is a ploy to get an inquiry. The presedent for sueing the government was set by Maher Arar a couple of years ago.
I would like an inquiry to find out why Canadians are being abandoned by the government .

If she donates 100% of the reward to charity, at least it won't be a cash grab. As it stands though, cash grab.

ohhh i'm so tired of anyone trying to make a huge deal out of anything to get money from the government, in other words us! look at the picture!!!! she doesn't look anything like that in real live, she's covered up and only her face shows…. how anyone can go through live like that must not appreciate or value anything. And now she wants 2.5 million dollars to ease her pain…. take a number lady…
Donate the money to charity and i will listen to what the inquiery comes up with…

they should call for a public inquiry into the reservation system across the country…but one must remember the people did not ask to be put in these political prison systems….this is long overdue and with this person that has a unpronouncable name with all respect to his original country he should be patient while the reservation inquiry is complete….meaning everything else can be put on hold until this archaic reservation system is dealt with!!
