Stephen Farrell, a New York Times reporter who had been kidnapped and held captive by Taliban fighters for four days, was rescued by British commandos in a pre-dawn raid this morning. His interpreter, Sultan Munadi, died during the rescue, as did an unnamed British commando and at least one civilian. A local Taliban commander said that 48 of his men were killed.
