Judith Timson wonders how we might better know our leaders.

Okay, perhaps I am being cynical, but just imagining these two guys trying to talk candidly about themselves, let alone impart any life lessons, makes me realize that we have largely come to know them only by their negatives as defined by each other … So here’s a crazy idea: What would happen if they both publicly told their life stories honestly, without partisan cant or ideology? At least we’d know who they really are. If either of them got up and told the true story of themselves and what they really value, they’d inspire more than students. We might even feel like voting for one of them.

If Harper and Iggy were brutally honest about themselves, as Ms. Timson suggests, Layton would probably win the next election. ;-)

Absolute worst moment in Canadian politics.

One of them, anyway! Thankfully it looks like Axworthy might overhaul the debates.

I was surprised Ms. May went as far as to say that Harper "loves his kids". I was expecting something even less classy, like: "Well, as far as I know, he's never killed someone".

I dunno. Stockwell Day in a wetsuit haunts me still.

You're assuming here that Layton wouldn't be equally honest.

Ok, you got me there….especially when he drove away.

Stock also gets a nod with the hand made sign.

How about "one of the top 5 gag reflex moments in Canadian politics"

Absolutely! You should start a blog dedicated to just this topic. Could be fun.

Ignatieff has written a shelf full of books including a couple of fairly autobiographical novels.

Another reason why we probably dont want more personal revelation. ie more stories like Iggy's detailing his loss of virginity on the grounds of UCC.

      File under TMI…..

Please tell me it isn't true that Ignatieff detailed his loss of virginity in his autobiography. I knew I didn't want to read his book before this, but now I have to hide it from my children.

        • Vince Clortho

He does, but it isnt like a bodice ripper…..heaving bosoms etc etc etc….Iggy just feels the need to say these things, either because he has an internal need to (one wonders why) or he thinks the reader wants to know (once again one must ask why). So this is why personal revelations from leaders are somewhat overrated. Besides, all people, and certainly politicians tell stories about themselves to create an artifice, so you never really know.

You know that's really coarse and vicio…
        .
        …Ah, you're probably right.

I believe Harper has written an autobiographical post-it note.

Teenage Harper blog: All the other kids think they are like so with it. I'll show them, I'll learn to play Gimme Shelter on the piano!

Teenage Layton blog: I don't care if the guys call it peach fuzz, the girls really dig my moustache.

Teenage Ignatieff blog: What's the point of studying Dosteovsky for Grad e 9 lit, if we aren't going to read it in the original Russian?

  • Vince Clortho

This is how we get silly questions in the debate, like.."say something nice about the leader seated to your left"….

"well , he loves his children and is nice to animals"

Absolute worst moment in Canadian politics.

"Absolute worst moment in Canadian politics."

Mainly because it was the one moment when the leaders could have been funny, and everybody dropped the ball. CR's idea for May on Harper — "As far as I know, he's never killed anyone" — would have been hilarious; but it's all in the timing. Two beats + frown + beat + "Mr. Layton's got a nice moustache" = ROLF's. Alas, alas, an opportunity missed!
