UPDATED: Jack Layton: Making Parliament Work … Like A Fox?

Although you can’t quite tell from the story exactly who tipped the Globe off to Guy Giorno’s lack of proper email etiquette apparent lack of interest in working with the Fourth Party on, well, anything, the fact that an NDP spokesman is quoted — by name, and on the record, even — yet PMO “has yet to respond to questions” suggests that it was probably the former.

Which raises an even more interesting possible scenario: Could it be that Team Jack is now somewhat frantically rethinking that initial pledge to seriously consider supporting the government’s proposal to extend employment insurance benefits for long-term workers — and, as a result, the government itself during the upcoming confidence vote?

It strikes ITQ that sending a follow-up email  to inquire whether, perhaps, McGrath’s initial correspondence had inadvertently been caught by the PMO spam filter would be a distinctly less confrontational way to find out if it was a deliberate snub than leaking it to the press. But by doing it this way, he can still throw up his hands in despair at the intransigence of the prime ministe, vote against the ways and means motion, thus preserving his party’s perfect record of voting non-confidence in the Conservatives — and blame the other parties for not wanting to Make Parliament Work.

Of course, that would also bring on an election. But at this point, even getting pummeled at the polls that may prove to be the least demoralizing outcome for the NDP if the prime minister’s utter indifference over yesterday’s show of tentative, yet earnest support is any indication of how Stephen Harper will respond when Jack shows up on the doorstep of 24 Sussex with his ideas on pension and credit card reform, infrastructure funding, climate change and whatever else is on his wish list.

UPDATE: The NDP spokesperson quoted in the Globe article, Karl Belanger, dropped a note to ITQ to let us know that he was not the source of the story.

It doesn't matter what the NDP does with the Conservatives. What will matter is the NDP's raison d'etre for getting people to vote for the party instead of the Liberal or Green Party.

      sounds pretty bleak

I know lots of dippers…..and I know NONE of them would vote for anyone else…They got more seats in the last election because of the deal of swapping votes with the crappers…they will go back to the same seats as they had before they swapped with the devil.

Is Iggy the new chessmaster driving the NDP into the arms of the evil Cons? It's a roll of the dice for Iggy but I think the Libs realize that if they push Harper hard and attack personally and often he can be forced into a blunder.
That little rip about Rae being an incompetent socialist from Ontario was given in anger and off message. Nobody pushed him in the last election. Lib attack ads and attacks from Liberal leader and front bench must be incessant. They can beat the guy.
Ignatieff will not be a push over in a debate. He's making Layton more irrelevant, as well.
No Harper must worry about a vote right now as does Layton

    • MJ Patchouli

There's conspiracy and master chess players at every turn!

      • the realist

The point is that you have to take into account what Ignatieff has achieved to date rather exagerated notions of what he should have achieved by now. Remember that he became leader only last november of a party which was disorganised, demoralized and broke. From january to August he had no choice but to buy time by supporting Harper since he had nothing to run a campaign with. He now has money, more than 100000 members and an organisation. He no longer has to play for time and can now go on with the task at hand namely be the leader of the opposition. Now that he is leader of the opposition he can plan for the next move: becoming prime minister. I would think this will be easier now that his gamble, that others in the house were more fearfull of an election than he is, has paid off. Its really pathetic watching Layton turn into Harper's lapdog.

How does his organization compare to the CPC? How many Liberal MP's are calling for an election? Are those reporters lying who said the room full of Liberals were NOT interested in going to the Polls?

Maybe we should switch to hockey. He's a Gretsky, No a Tie Domi, a Howe, a Richard type. I do think Iggy is a bit of a Gretsky, Harper more Howe, smart but elbows always up in the corners. Now Layton ??? I give up. Duceppe of course Henri, not Maurice.

        • John W.

To clarify, he's a Gretsky type, not the greatest politician in the history of the world.

        • tobyornottoby

I don't see much in the way of finesse or subtlety from Harper, mostly bullying. I'd peg him for more of an enforcer who occassionally scores like Dave Semenko. Layton is a pest pure and simple, an agitator who stirs it up on the ice like Sean Avery. Ignatieff impresses me more as a Player Rep, never laced it up, but went to Harvard and then jumped in at the leadership level, like Bob Godenow.

    • Dakota

I think Ignatieff just wants to be back home before winter semester begins. He was promised that he would be President of Canada by now!

      • the realist

You are mistaking him for His all powerful excellency Harper the first President (in his own mind) of canada from whom all power flows and his adoring accolades the Conservative MPs (in their case it is the abbreviation for Mindless Peons.)

This headline would be more hilarious if it were.

"Jack Layton: Making Parliament Work … Like A Boss?"

If you don't know what I'm talking about look up "Like a Boss" on youtube. but be warned slightly NSFW.

This is truly pathetic. Even George Costanza had more self-respect than Jack Layton.

gilles took some of the heat off jack by agreeing to support ways and means

Who votes first on Friday ?

It is INCOMPREHENSIBLE that Taber / Curry are ALLOWED to print that article without a little more information on who the source is.

Any journalist worth his/her salt would not allow themselves to be pawns – by not at least describing whether the source is an NDPer or Conservative, the Globe has allowed themselves to be played.

Taber has a track record of this practice and I personally find it reprehensible. Readers should be given enough information – even for an anonymous source – to determine if there are conflicts of interest. Anonymous sources should only be 100% protected (eg no description of affiliation, etc.) if they would be personally harmed from revealing something that is in the public good.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/CanadianSense CanadianSense

      Who is Taber again?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Jenn_ Jenn_

No, anonymous sources shouldn't be anonymous at all unless they would be personally harmed from revealing something that is in the public good. And when I say personally harmed, I don't mean PMO coming down on them because they were supposed to be "an unnamed/senior goverment/Conservative source"

    An election won't happen because it makes no sense for any of the parties: CPC won't get big gains, Iggy will be turfed having lost, and at best the NDP and Bloc will get the status quo;

    EXCEPT

if the internals are showing what the Ipsos Reid poll (or a tad better) is showing, rather than Harris Decima ect,

in which case Harper will force an election.

The proof will be in the pudding.

Re anonymous sources…..I just would like to see Macleans start a trend. Perhaps Macleans can publish its policy on its website and in every edition on things like anonymous sources, confirmation policy etc.

I would love to know that when I read something like that that it has or hasnt been confirmed by another source, the list of posisble reasons Macleans is holding back identification. Perhaps even their policy on when their gradations of identity.

The average person doesnt know, so you end up with one of two conclusions

    1) They make it up
    2) They act like Ben Bradlee in the movie, all The Presidents Men.

But hey, its your brand, and your profession so its your choice if you want to build up your credibility. Raise the bar, start the trend, establish a new standard…..
