From last week’s Sunday Times (London):

The Sunday Times can disclose the eclectic mix of candidates who answered the Conservative leader’s appeal for people with no previous involvement in politics to stand for parliament.

The 70 names who have recently been added to the approved list of Tory candidates include Rory Stewart, a Harvard professor who set up a charity in Afghanistan and once taught the princes William and Harry.

This is where Stewart is currently working.

    Our Hahvahd prof once had a very public Afghan position. We, of course, no longer know what our Hahvahd professor's Afghan position is since his position changes on a daily basis depending on the polls.

    So that makes two Afghanistan experts deciding to run for a Conservative Party.

    However, Mr. Stewart is definitely in favour of getting the military out of Afghanistan and sooner would be better than later.

    Stewart is running in the UK.

    How long has Stewart been out of the UK…but it sure sounds like he maintained contacts back in the UK. In fact here are the relevant parts of his Bio Other than having taught atthe Carr the comparison only shows how little Ignatieff had to do with Canada in contrast to how much Stewart maintained contact and invoilved in UK politics and government.

    "Rory earned his BA and MA in Modern History and Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Balliol College, Oxford University, served as an officer in the British Army, and worked for the British Diplomatic Service in Indonesia, Montenegro and elsewhere, before taking two years to walk from Turkey to Bangladesh. He covered 6,000 miles on foot across Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal – a journey which he describes in his critically acclaimed book entitled The Places in Between. In 2003 he started working for the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Iraq as Deputy Governorate Coordinator (Amara/Maysan) and Senior Adviser and Deputy Governorate Coordinator (Nasiriyah/Dhi Qar). In recognition of his service in Iraq, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the British Government in 2004. "

    Uh, VInce, I was referring to Chris Alexander who will be running for the Conservatives here in Canada and contrasting whatever his opinion is on how Canada should deal with Afghanistan, http://www.theglobeandmail.com/blogs/silver-power… and Mr. Stewart's openly stated preference for NATO forces to leave.

    I happen to admire Mr. Stewart quite a bit.
