To get more women into Parliament, we've got to get rid of some of the women in Parliament

by Aaron Wherry on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 11:03am - 51 Comments

With all the usual caveats whenever anonymous Liberals are involved, a novel theory is attributed to Denis Coderre here.

Coderre has pressured some long-serving MPs with safe seats to resign, according to a number of Liberal sources. They told CBC News the party wants those seats for star female candidates as part of its renewal process. The sources said former party leader Stéphane Dion, along with Bernard Patry, Raymonde Folco, and Lise Zarac, have all been asked to step aside.

Two of those MPs are publicly downplaying the suggestion. Patry said he did speak to Coderre about his future candidacy, but when asked by CBC News if he felt pressured to resign, he said, “Not really.” ”He asked me if I thought I would run again and I told him yes,” Patry said.

In an interview, Folco said she had heard rumours that she was going to be asked to resign, so she made an appointment to meet with the leader. ”I said, ‘I want to stay’ and he said, ‘It’s true, I want renewal, but you will stay in the party and be the candidate for Laval-Les Îles.’”

Speaking of renewal, Lise Zarac was first elected all of eleven and a half months ago. Change moves swiftly these days.

To get more women into Parliament…

Talk to Coyne. Maybe we need to make voting mandatory only for women, in the disgustingly sexist hope that women are more likely to vote for women candidates.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Ed_Sweeney Ed_Sweeney

That theory has been disproven in a broad range of polling data, women are no more likely to vote for women than they are for men.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/madeyoulook madeyoulook

You're right, Ed. I should've added "(and wrong)" after "sexist." Although I wonder what would happen if the newly coerced but never terribly inclined now appear at the polling stations.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/SeanStok SeanStok

We'll probably have to come up with another term to replace "polling station."

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/PhilCP PhilCP

Just curious…is the opposite also true?

And on the topic, was it only gender that was studied for correlation, or were other criteria examined?

  • Maureen

More entitlement ideas from the LPC. Rather than listen to voters (who by the way will vote for strong candidates regardless of gender, race, religion etc.) the LPC is entitled to adjust our thinking since we are too stupid to know what is good for us. By the way – has this ever worked for the Liberals? not by the examples of Hedy Fry, Ruby what's her name etc. – shining stars? pleassse!

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/PhilCP PhilCP

Any thoughts (or evidence) regarding what the single, most important criteria that determines how a ballot is marked might be?

    • Foreigner

"By the way – has this ever worked for the Liberals? not by the examples of Hedy Fry, Ruby what's her name etc. – shining stars? pleassse!"

      Woman is shrew to woman.

    • MJ Patchouli

What's it like to be so wrong?

So you obviously vote "party" — does that make you too stupid to know what's good for you, or too smart?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/craigola craigola

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. If voters are, as you appear to say, not as stupid as assumed and will vote for strong candidates regardless of considerations you deem extraneous (gender, race, religion), then how does that leave the LPC entitled to adjust anyone's thinking? They may feel entitled, but isn't there a fairly large chasm between feeling entitled and being entitled? Please explain.

Wouldn't it be easier for the Liberals to hire and accept the volunteer services of only women? All staff, pollsters, war room denziens parliamentary assistants, film crews used for ads, etc., could be fired if male, and replaced with women.

While it would probably vastly improve the Liberal party's organization, there'd still be a dearth of leadership. :)

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/madeyoulook madeyoulook

      Wow! That's a party I'd want to join — oh, wait…

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Crit_Reasoning Crit_Reasoning

Stéphane Dion has been asked to step aside so a rookie female candidate can take his place? There's gratitude for ya.

One minute he's on the podium being embraced by Chretien, Martin, and Turner, the next minute he's been asked to step aside in his own riding for a more worthy female candidate, all in the name of 'democratic renewal'.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/madeyoulook madeyoulook

I am democratic renewal, hear me roar…

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Geiseric Geiseric

All this to compensate for the sad fact the press has no clue what goes on under the CPC hood.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/SeanStok SeanStok

I hear they tried to sell it to him as the Pink Shift.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Crit_Reasoning Crit_Reasoning

Sure, they sold it to him as the "Pink Shift", but it turns there was a minor typo, and Stéphane Dion was really getting the Pink Shaft.

    • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/Crit_Reasoning Crit_Reasoning

Sure, they sold it to him as the "Pink Shift", but it turns out there was a minor typo, and Stéphane Dion was really getting the Pink Shaft.

      • Cam

I love when Crit loves Dion.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Gaunilon Gaunilon

All this time I've been under the impression that Stephane Dion already was female…

    • Foreigner

Man, you've said some dumb things, but that one takes the cake.

major Burn : sits right on the edge of being in bad taste or not but still a major league burn – Ouch!

What is this, the junior high boy's change room?

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Gaunilon Gaunilon

Am I missing some obscene interpretation of the joke, or are you just upset to see a joke about Dion?

        • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/Gaunilon Gaunilon

Am I missing some unintended obscene interpretation of the joke, or are you just upset to see a joke about Dion?

    • Sigh

Curiously, Gaunilon and all who responded to his comment seem to equate being called "female" with an insult.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/PhilCP PhilCP

Perhaps it is an insult to all females to be equated to Dion.

        • Sigh

I think Dion is immaterial to my point. I just find it odd that suggesting that someone is like a female or does something "like a girl" is considered an insult.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Gaunilon Gaunilon

Anyway it would be a lot more efficient to mandate that all the male Liberal MPs get a sex change.

    Problem solved!

  • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/Gaunilon Gaunilon

    Classy.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/TwoYen TwoYen

If Ignatieff thinks it's time for Lise Zarac to be replaced after only 11 months in the job, he'd better watch his butt.

There are no doubt several people in his own party (Martha Hall whatshername, for example) who may also think it's time for leadership renewal as well.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/TwoYen TwoYen

Or Marlene Jennings? She meets all the qualifications for the next Liberal leader. She's female, from Quebec (it's Quebec's turn), and as a bonus she's a visible minority. A virtual triple play.

      • http://nottawa.blogspot.com mark

        Quebec's turn?

        When do any of New Brunswick/Nova Scotia/Alberta/British Columbia/Saskatchewan/Prince Edward Island/Newfoundland & Labrador/Yukon/Manitoba/Nunavut/Northwest Territories have a 'turn'?

        • wilson

When they vote Liberal in big numbers,
          so never.

  • Monkeys for Coderre

Iggy's endorsement of Coderre exposes a major lack of judgment and leadership by the Liberal leader.

This assine decision will have repercussions far beyond Cauchon
and Outremont (where Mulcair is no doubt wetting himself with glee).

Which other high profile candidates are going to take a pass on running for the LPC for fear of upsetting Coderre because somewhere down the road they could best him in any possible leadership race?

This is history repeating itself. Dion made the same mistake running no-namer Jocelyn Coulon. Clearly Iggy and Coderre's sense of entitlement continues to cloud any introspection that could spare further electoral humiliation.

    Classic Dion moment.

    Bravo chaps!

    • even flow

Its not as if Corderre is running himself. In fact the candidate he has chosen seems to be a 'star candidate' as well.

      Findlay, Martha Hall Findlay.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/TwoYen TwoYen

Oh, yes. Martha Hall Findlay …the former leadership candidate who was overheard at her 50th birthday party bash at Hy's Restaurant last week saying that she didn't agree with her leader's rush to have an election. I guess that's who I meant. I wonder what else she disagrees with her leader on?

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Douglass Douglass

I'm curious, how does knowing her name warrant thumbs down. I neither agreed nor disagreed with the poster. I just gave relevant information.

Between party HQ lording over the riding association and the installation of a leader without a vote, it is definitely a little unsettling to see such disdain for democratic process.

    • even flow

but only if it is the Liberal doing it, right?

  • KOL

If the Liberals had the same respect for "grassroots democracy" as the Conservatives do, they would be paying off unwanted candidates and threatening them with lawsuits to keep them quiet.

    • wilson

There is a distinction to be made here,
it can be found in the Gomery inquiry.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/OntarioTown OntarioTown

Yup, like Harper's nomination processes are so democratic.

Oh, oh, the Tory trolls will attack me now.

So, we rely on the media and their "secret" sources, etc. – sigh….

    • wilson

I live in a riding where the nomination process was less than desirable,
and voted for the Independent Conservative running, rather than the 'chosen one'.
Libs grassroots have to take back their party.

  • Anon

Only Dion's been asked to leave. They threw the other names in there so it won't look bad.
