All this attention on IKEA actually motivated me to recently shop there, especially after receiving a sale flyer. I've always loved IKEA, and I don't care if they use a new font. Even if they change their logo I would not care much. As someone pointed out, it's about functionality. As a large multi-national corporation, they can do whatever they want...change the font to courrier for all I care!

It's the cheap family meals that bring in the customers. Not sure the stuff is that good - does a font really matter?

It is annoying when companies insist on re - designing a proven logo with a *new and improved*
If the *old and lousy* is selling the product - leave it alone.

As a font snob myself, I was very surprised at the sudden change to Verdana for their printed works. It really changed the entire look and feel of their printed pieces, and that will always affect how (at least some) people look at their products, whether they can figure out that it's because of the font or not.

I believe it stands for functional design. If the font doesn't work well on a screen it's not very functional.

All of that without mentioning the big objection that people have over the use of Verdana in the Ikea catalog: it was originally designed to look good at a small size on a computer screen, and was never really meant for print use. That's why typography and design snobs are so up in arms about it. Ikea likes to go on and on about how important design is to them, but using a typeface designed for on-screen screams "we really couldn't care less about design." It violates one of the fundamental principles of Ikea: good design.
