Sarah Palin’s much-anticipated memoir—Going Rogue: An American Life—was supposed to be done next spring. But since resigning from her post as Alaska governor, the failed vice-presidential candidate has been typing so fast the release date was bumped up to next month. Her publisher, Jonathan Burham, is understandably thrilled. “Governor Palin has been unbelievably conscientious and hands-on at every stage, investing herself deeply and passionately in this project,” he says. “It’s her words, her life, and it’s all there in full and fascinating detail.” The first press run will be a whopping 1.5 million copies. No word yet on whether John McCain has already placed his order.

I don't know who the need to know editor is but — from watching what they've posted for last few months — they're incredibly bigoted.

In terms of this story, the editor is simply indulging in the repressed contempt so many smug social democrats in southern Ontario, southern Quebec, the Northeastern US, and California have for anything conservative, rural, and folksy.

Though I'm not a conservative, I find the hatred displayed to those persons that are mean, hateful, and ugly.

    Shame!

Yep. It's a little bit amusing though, since with 5 kids, a Governorship, and huge clout in US politics Palin has already accomplished more than the Editor in question is ever likely to.

A preference for substance over idolatry. Confusing such things with hatred or bigotry is a common fallacy too many are happy to propagate…

"Sarah Palin done writing 'dem words"? Ah yes, substantive and entirely objective to make her sound like she's an uneducated boor from the deep South.

She and her campaign branded her as folksy.

          Fair game? You betcha.

I look forward to the chapters on the Bush Doctrine and American Exceptionalism.

I've found the palpable hatred directed against Sarah Palin odd myself. Sure, you can bring several criticisms against her, but the personal nature of the bile seems on par with that of the tea party supporters vs. Obama.

I guess the fringes will always be more like each other than they like to admit.

What was her motivation in cutting short her term as Governor to write this?

Settling old scores? – the timing seems inappropriate
Set herself up for a Presidential run? – by abandoning her elected post? Seems kind of odd
Rake in a pile of cash? – very likely to happen

Does she deserve hatred? Does Obama? Does Harper? Does Ignatieff?

I don't share her outlook, I don't feel sorry for her and I don't feel the need to defend her. I am by nature generally empathetic and compassionate, but she strikes me as the type who would find it fair game to manipulate those feelings against me.

    No, thank you

    Who's the ghost writer?

Ok granted, there is a visceral dislike if not downright hatred for Palin the second you get to one smidge to the centre of left. But by the same token, why do those on the right feel "left hates Palin= right feels compelled to love her." ? The woman IS A GD DIMWIT who made is as far as she did on looks and folksiness. Just because you don't give a crap about how down-home she sounds and would rather hear coherent intelligent arguments about an issue does not mean you hate those without the life experience or education you have. Just as attacking her based on class appeal is futile, defending her on the basis of class appeal does nothing to shore up her actual qualifications for office.

  • TedTylerEzro

I imagine it is because the left hates her so much.

I'd elect a chimp with matches before I'd elect a member of the NDP for example. Now preferrably, I have more options than the above two.

If Sarah Palin actually becomes influential among the leadership of the GOP, it will be evidence of a leadership vacuum indeed. So if Sarah Palin's star is rising, take cheer.

Having been prompted to review her speech (FT.com) , I'll assume you are referencing the following:

And there is such a need to BUILD up and FIGHT for our state and our country. I choose to FIGHT for it! And I’ll work hard for others who still believe in free enterprise and smaller government; strong national security for our country and support for our troops; energy independence; and for those who will protect freedom and equality and LIFE… I’ll work for and campaign for those PROUD to be American, and those who are INSPIRED by our ideals and won’t deride them.

I guess the world will find out Nov 17th.

Me? I may or may not read it, but I certainly won't buy it

No, I was referring to this:

"Political operatives descended on Alaska last August, digging for dirt. The ethics law I championed became their weapon of choice. Over the past nine months I’ve been accused of all sorts of frivolous ethics violations – such as holding a fish in a photograph, wearing a jacket with a logo on it, and answering reporters’ questions.

Every one – all 15 of the ethics complaints have been dismissed. We’ve won! But it hasn’t been cheap – the State has wasted THOUSANDS of hours of YOUR time and shelled out some two million of YOUR dollars to respond to “opposition research” – that’s money NOT going to fund teachers or troopers – or safer roads…

It’s pretty insane – my staff and I spend most of our day dealing with THIS instead of progressing our state now. I know I promised no more “politics as usual,” but THIS isn’t what anyone had in mind for ALASKA…

My choice is to take a stand and effect change – not hit our heads against the wall and watch valuable state time and money, millions of your dollars, go down the drain in this new environment. Rather, we know we can effect positive change outside government at this moment in time, on another scale, and actually make a difference for our priorities "

In other words she found that once she became a hated target of the Left, they descended on Alaska and began trying to sabotage her term as Governor by launching frivolous ethics complaints. By Alaska law each one has to be investigated, no matter how absurd it is, so they were wasting all their time and money on that. So rather than continue in this morass she opted to let Alaska have a new Governor whose success wasn't viewed as such a threat to the Left so they'd be able to get things done. Capisce?

    Fair enough.

Given this scenario, the reviews of the book will focus on any perceived flaws.
You might argue this is part of a unified effort by the left to distort her views.
Bill Clinton spoke of a "vast, right wing conspiracy"

It would seem that this is how we "do" politics now, but I somehow think it was always this way. The difference now is that we all link up, where as in days gone by we relied on newspapers and radio .

If we consider Clinton's argument, then we must consider Palin's as well. Given that, political discussion becomes a dizzying vortex which spins on itself and leads to nowhere.

The search for truth is a long, damn road!
