That well might be. One reason The Office works is that it's basically created in the editing room, which means that they can cope with the short running time by coming up with creative solutions (like cutting out part of a scene and fillling the gap with a talking head). That's not an option for theatre-style shows, which struggle like crazy with the need to get everything done in a short time.

taxi was by far the best sitcom ever. the acting was real, superb and deeply felt. the scripts were outstanding and true to life.

I tend to feel that every sitcom these days, even good ones, tends to be a bit fast on the pace compared to the older ones, almost like they're writing a full length show without accounting for the extra commercial time that's added now. I noticed the US remake of Coupling was absurdly fast-paced because they literally took the original UK episode and compressed 30 minutes down to 20.

In other words, maybe his problem is that he can't sustain the speed needed now without the pace feeling off.

You have to let scenes breathe, its like music, sometimes the pauses between notes have the most impact. Theres no phrasing to his directing style

Boy, you aren't kidding about the speed. Paula Marshall's a terrific actress, and she just tears through her lines here like she has another appointment.
