When Jerry Moyes decided he'd had enough of sinking millions of dollars into the Phoenix Coyotes, he knew RIM's Jim Balsillie was still casting around for a way into the NHL's owners' club and would be willing to pay top dollar for the chance to move the Coyotes to southern Ontario. However, Moyes also knew the NHL would never approve Balsillie's plans. His solution—to put the club in bankruptcy protection in the hopes a judge would force the club's sale to Balsillie—has since set off one of the ugliest legal battles in NHL history.
