After QP today, Ujal Dosanjh rose on a point of order to say:

Mr. Speaker, I wish to inform you and the House that I inadvertently tweeted about matters that I ought not to have tweeted about. That is the proceedings in camera of the defence committee. That was an error on my part and that entry will be deleted at the earliest possible opportunity, which is right after I get out of here.

The CBC has details of the infraction here, plus video of the apology. But what it doesn’t catch is the Speaker’s answer which went something like this: ” I thank the honourable member. I assume that tweeting means it went on Twitter… I don’t know anything about that stuff…”

(Anyone have the exact quote from Milliken? It was priceless; as if “Twitter” was some crazy thing the kids are up to).

Milliken has a desk full of 5 cent stamps dating from the same period that he started reading Hansard.

Journalists all love to harp on about how bad decorum is in the House now; none of them bother to pose to Miliken the question as to why he’s allowed it to happen during his historically-long tenure.

There were a few articles about the current speaker’s historic milestone, but none that critically examined his uselessness as speaker. Perhaps that’s because the media have been his guests at nice dinners in Centre Block, held in between his extensive international travel trips to meet with his counterparts in other countries that don’t keep track of their equivalents’ spending.

Journalists and columnists like to complaint about perks of office. They love to complain about Question Period and the quality of debate. But oddly, none complain that the Speaker hosts them at a garden party at his Gatineau Park residence annually at taxpayers’ expense.

Don't forget, Milliken is enforcing the rules the members set for themselves.

And the members are voting Milliken in.

So clearly, the fault only lies partially with Milliken.

Peter Milliken is awesome, and also very nice. That he isn't into twitter only makes him cooler. The only time I ever hear about twitter is in reference to politicians using it. I don't know of a single person that uses twitter (and I'm 26).
