After QP today, Ujal Dosanjh rose on a point of order to say:
Mr….

After QP today, Ujal Dosanjh rose on a point of order to say:

Mr. Speaker, I wish to inform you and the House that I inadvertently tweeted about matters that I ought not to have tweeted about. That is the proceedings in camera of the defence committee. That was an error on my part and that entry will be deleted at the earliest possible opportunity, which is right after I get out of here.

The CBC has details of the infraction here, plus video of the apology. But what it doesn’t catch is the Speaker’s answer which went something like this: ” I thank the honourable member. I assume that tweeting means it went on Twitter… I don’t know anything about that stuff…”

(Anyone have the exact quote from Milliken? It was priceless; as if “Twitter” was some crazy thing the kids are up to).

atwitter you say – ROFL – I am not surprised when it comes to Ujal as he always places foot in mouth first then sort of mumbles around it.

I watched it and you have the gist of what the Speaker said pretty accurately.

    What a twit.

      What a tweet :)

  • Sigh

"I inadvertently tweeted about matters that I ought not to have tweeted about. "

How can a grown man say that with a straight face?

      Inadvertent twittering is the worst.

        Aadverb
        1 unwittingly, inadvertently, unknowingly
without knowledge or intention; "he unwittingly deleted the references"
        (hat tip to wordreference.com)

"Mr. Speaker, I unknowingly pulled out my BlackBerry and, without any idea what I was doing, I accurately reported an in camera event from the committee at which I did not realize I was participating, and I have no idea how I managed to insert a partisan comment as well. Mr Speaker, I am an unwitting twit, and I apologize to the Members of this House and to the voters of Vancouver South. But in my defence, Mr. Speaker, I did not use the camera function of my Berry. I suppose I could have, since it was, you know, IN camera, but I never have figured out how take any picture with that thing."

Sniff. Kady would've appreciated this effort of mine.

What's the line? Doesn't have to be true, just plausible? Well, ok then.

THE SPEAKER: Black berries? I thought we send date squares for those committees — (leaning over to a nearby page) what is the Honourable Member from Vancouver South talking about?

    • Craig O

      Twitter is just that evil.

  • Dot

Not surprising. Milliken has a desk full of 32 cent stamps from the last time he had to pay for something for himself.

      Oh! Oh!

      • Dot

Arnold Horschack coudn't have said it better.

Check out Milliken's perpetual rednose in Mitchell's photo journals. It's not because it's cold in his wine cellars, though I bet the twitter reception is poor there.

  • Katherine

That makes me really love Peter Milliken.

  • J W Smyth

Milliken has a desk full of 5 cent stamps dating from the same period that he started reading Hansard.

Journalists all love to harp on about how bad decorum is in the House now; none of them bother to pose to Miliken the question as to why he’s allowed it to happen during his historically-long tenure.

There were a few articles about the current speaker’s historic milestone, but none that critically examined his uselessness as speaker. Perhaps that’s because the media have been his guests at nice dinners in Centre Block, held in between his extensive international travel trips to meet with his counterparts in other countries that don’t keep track of their equivalents’ spending.

Journalists and columnists like to complaint about perks of office. They love to complain about Question Period and the quality of debate. But oddly, none complain that the Speaker hosts them at a garden party at his Gatineau Park residence annually at taxpayers’ expense.

    • Scott M.

Don't forget, Milliken is enforcing the rules the members set for themselves.

And the members are voting Milliken in.

So clearly, the fault only lies partially with Milliken.

  • hosertohoosier

Peter Milliken is awesome, and also very nice. That he isn't into twitter only makes him cooler. The only time I ever hear about twitter is in reference to politicians using it. I don't know of a single person that uses twitter (and I'm 26).

Q: What part of your daily routine would surprise people?

A: Probably the number of receptions, dinners and lunches. I go to so many.
