I tried to listen to a whole whack of new music this year 'cause I was feeling old pretty much all of the time, except June for some reason. And the only thing I could get into was Metric and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Everything else sounded like it was compressed, shoved through an old ham radio, blown up using helium, and then rebroadcasted on AM.

You know there's a problem with the quality of music recording these days when Mark Knopfler's ode to Exxon (via Heavy Fuel) and the Bauhaus meanderings on the undead (ala Bela Lugosi's Dead) bootlegged are the height of sound quality.

Some personal favs just off the top of my head:

"Nothing to Worry About", Peter Bjorn and John

It's Not Me, It's You, Lily Allen – I don't know if I like it better than her debut, but it's certainly not a sophomore slump.

I'm not sure I've listened to a lot that was released in 2009 lately. I've been enjoying a lot of "new to me, but not necessarily new" stuff lately. For example, I'm sure I got Beast's Beast in 2009, but it was released in 2008 (I really like it a lot).

And is it too uncool and mainstream of me to say that I liked The Killers Day & Age and Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3? I'm really enjoying Hova's latest myself, but even if one doesn't like it, surely the album that knocked off Elvis' record of most Number 1 albums by a solo artist deserves a mention.

I haven't actually heard the new Iron & Wine, but I love Iron & Wine, so I'll have to check that out. This was such a great post as it's got me thinking about music. My iTunes account will get some work tonight!

C'mon, Scott. Yes, repetitive experimental wankery is the name of the game for Animal Collective, but "Summertime Clothes" and "Bluish" don't fit into that pattern the way the rest of the album does, and they're two pretty awesome songs to boot.

Just making my way through your list, Feschuk, so thanks for the tips. Just listened to Edward Sharpe's Home and it reminded me a lot of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, who were brilliant. Going to have to buy Home at the very least.

Two albums that I really enjoyed this year:

1) Ida Maria – Fortress Round My Heart – Norwegian band with pop-punk-ska style. My fav two songs are I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked and Oh My God.

2) Bell X1 – Blue Lights On The Runway – Irish rock band. Best song is The Great Defector.
