Gabriel and Genesis: Better apart

Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975. He was having marital problems, felt restricted by the band, and wanted to branch into solo work. It was a good call—Gabriel’s first solo album was an instant hit, and the vacancy he left allowed drummer Phil Collins to step into the spotlight as a lead singer. That propelled Genesis into the height of its popularity, neither of which may have happened if Gabriel had remained in the band.
