Journey was already on indefinite hiatus in 1987, largely because Steve Perry refused to tour, but the singer didn’t officially leave the band until a decade later. In 1997 the musicians reunited, recorded a successful album, and were starting a tour—then Perry went hiking in Hawaii and hurt his hip. He needed surgery in order to perform, but refused to go under the knife, forcing the other band members to move on, eventually hiring a singer they found on YouTube.
