The man who outshone the band
The problem with the Police was that they were, as a whole, simply outshone by Sting. He wasn’t the band’s founder—that title belongs to drummer Stewart Copeland—but he was the front man, he wrote most of the group’s hits and his personal fame was far beyond that of the other members. Artistic tensions were growing between Sting and Copeland in the early '80s, resulting in a fist fight between the pair after a show in Australia. The band went on indefinite hiatus in 1983, and all of the members continued on in successful careers, but none reached the level of fame Sting achieved as a solo artist.
