And tonight Mr. Cosh is topping the bill

by Paul Wells on Friday, November 20, 2009 2:51pm - 32 Comments

If you haven’t noticed yet, please give a warm welcome to Colby Cosh of Edmonton, who’s our latest addition to the blogging roster. He’ll also be writing for the magazine. Most of you already know Colby from the National Post and other venues. His blog will speak for itself and, in any case, defy easy categorization: he writes about everything with authority; he thinks his own way around issues rather than pulling handy cant down off the Handy Cant Rack; he’s politically conservative, most times, but (a) writes a lot about issues that have nothing to do with party politics (b) wears no party’s team jersey. He is not “our replacement for Kady.” Of course there can be no such creature in any case. He is simply a welcome new voice.

he writes about everything with authority

And it that's challenged, he'll just ignore it. Or maybe not. Maybe The National Post experience has been salutary. We shall see.

Welcome. Not only is the Macleans blogging crew a good read, but the format here is excellent. IntenseDebate is definitely "where its at" as the kids would say.

  • Bill Simpson

I have been a fan of Colby Cosh since I first tripped over his blog a few years ago. An excellent addition!

  • Andrew (not Potter or Coyne)

Welcome to Mr. Cosh. Of course, this hardly makes up for the loss of Kady. She really is a gem for political journalism.

Maybe all the commenters should pitch in and send Colby a case of Red Bull and some peroxide.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/colbycosh colbycosh

The thousand-word post about cancer screening with the 4 a.m. MST timestamp wasn't a clue that my fridge just might already have some Red Bull in it? Those guys should be sponsoring me.

I hear it gives you wings.

            That, and Always Maxi Pads.

      "…he thinks his own way around issues rather than pulling handy cant down off the Handy Cant Rack";

I think this is Paul's way of saying he's not Wherry.

Wherry is cant-free. I can't remember the last time he editorialised. That's the genius of his QP pieces: he just lets the dancing animals speak for themselves.

Welcome to Mr. Cosh. He's written some great stuff for the Post and he's a great blogger.

I've been a Colby fan going all the way back to his Space Moose contributions.

Thanks, Paul. Everybody's been awfully nice really. Maclean's clearly has the best comment section of any major media outlet in this country (though that is pretty faint praise; the others all leave you feeling jittery and scabious after about 30 seconds of reading).

      That, I like.

      Welcome.

      ha!

I think you're right, though – I actually read through them here, and tap the little +/- buttons (and often there are a lot of +) — and when I find myself compelled to type something in this little box, I do feel like I'm genuinely participating in a useful discussion … or at least, the closest thing we're going to get in a comments section. Cheers.

Has anyone at Macleans checked to see if Cosh is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

  • matt

Once again Macleans is full of lies. Everyone knows Cosh wears an Oilers jersey.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Lord_Bob Lord Bob

The Oilers are the opposite of a party right now. Think "wake".

  • Dee

Wow, quite the diverse bunch of columnists currently working for Maclean's! Is there any Maclean's columnist who isn't a white male (ok, except for Luiza Ch. Savage)? It's such a sausage-fest that one would think you guys were the Conservative cabinet.

    • Mike T.

National Post refugees have to end up somewhere.

      • Kaplan

        True, that.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/hellomike hellomike

Canadian media in general sorely lacks non-white-males anyway, and almost completely lacks non-white faces. In newspaper, the only visible minority columnist I know of, actually, is Royson James – who is fantastic in his GTA politics coverage, iirc. Who else is out there?

I think the NP's people-spotting guy is of Indian descent. But none of them will have jobs in a few months anyway.

Welcome Colby. I'm looking forward to your hockey blogging. Just remember to say nice things about our hero Daniel Alfredsson.

    • kcm

His hero is Alfredsson…i hate him already! Welcome Mr Cosh. You're not bringing Lorne over with you, are you? No, best leave him where he can do the least harm.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/TwoYen TwoYen

Let me be clear. I was not referring to Colby Cosh when I was speaking about Alfie. I was only speaking about those of us in Ottawa. I suspect Cosh has other hockey heroes.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Crit_Reasoning Crit_Reasoning

You hate Alfredsson? Why, because he's announced that he'll be a Senator for life? Kc, do you mean to say you've been in favour of reforming the Senate all this time?

        http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/maplelea…

        • kcm

          B*****d Frog:)

I shoulda kept my head up! Cross checking! illegal use of a quip! 10 mins and a misconduct for instigating.

Nothing at all against Alfie. It was just fortunate for me that TY set it up for me. Sorry bout that TY, no offense intended.

  • kcm

And the only reform to the senate i want is a far more rigorous standard applied to who gets in. A weight limit might be a good place to start?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Jack_Mitchell Jack Mitchell

Welcome, Mr. Cosh! Have really enjoyed your posts so far.

  • Allan Connery

Glad to see Cosh on board. Now give him a link in BLOGS > Canada Blogs.
