This one's for the guy who didn't like my "rant" about torture on the teevee

by Paul Wells on Friday, November 27, 2009 1:02pm - 13 Comments

A lobbyist wrote me the other day to say some comments I made on the CBC after Richard Colvin’s committee testimony were “outrageous.” I told him to expect some more. Here, in my column from the magazine’s latest print edition, is some more.

Right and wrong. Such a novel concept.

If everything was decided by right and wrong, you wouldn't need lobbyists.

      Imagine no lobbyists
      I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger….

"Janine Krieber, a disgruntled Liberal political spouse", I think her CV actually says " a political scientist and renowned expert on terrorism and international security". Which would seem to matter in a discussion on terrorism and torture.

Also, transferring prisoners to torture is bad – whether it's an Afghan prison or an American prison in Afghanistan. Why can't we see an article about how that could have been avoided and why it wasn't? It's trite to say we shouldn't focus on whether this benefits the Liberals or Conservatives when you have the opportunity to write your column about the substance…

"Right and wrong. Such a novel concept."

Absolute right and wrong? Not novel, granted, but certainly long-lost.

Of course, the identity of these influential moral imbeciles has to be kept secret, otherwise, there'll be consequences.

    Right and wrong indeed.

    Hear hear. Thanks.

  • Wascally Wabbit

I commented on your actual article…but i'll comment here on your statement on Power and Politics…

You were – as I recall – sitting next to Paul Chapin – the former DFAIT public servant whose weasel words made "Sir Humphrey" sound damned blunt…and I watched your body language as you made your point. Consciously or not, on the TV screen it looked as if – physically as well as verbally – you wanted to put as much distance between him and yourself as possible…

One of the Progressive Blogger affiliates < a href="http://mikewatkins.ca/2009/11/27/civilians-get-secret-documents-mackay-laughs/">today has said that whoever gave Hillier and the other retired General -now of course civilians – access to those secret documents to let them refresh their memories before their Afghanistan testimony is in probable violation of the Security Of Information Act.

Just wondered if any of the journos here at Macleans has an opinion on whether that is the case.

I seem to remember one of those on the At Issue panel, maybe even AC, raising a similar point.

MacKay was out there today claiming this was common practice. I think I might do some reading up on the Security of Information Act over the weekend to see if he's correct.

yeah, screw that date you have with that brainy bombshell, you've got the Security of Information Act to read! Look out Peter MacKay!

      • Lord Kitchener's Own

Yes, I agree with chuckercanuck, "Boooo informed citizenry".

Scott, you're going to read a law in an attempt to determine whether our Minister of Defence is lying to Canadians, sharing classified information with people who shouldn't have access to it, and potentially covering up our involvement in handing over people to be tortured by a foreign government?

        Loser.

I look forward to my print edition arriving in 2 or 3 weeks.
