The ‘science’ of global warming

These leaked documents reveal the greatest scientific scandal of our times—and a tragedy

“The gravest challenge that we face is climate change . . . Every one of our compatriots must feel concerned”—Nicolas Sarkozy, president of the French Republic;

“The climate crisis threatens our very survival”—Herman Van Rompuy, “president” of “Europe”;

“We cannot compromise with the catastrophe of unchecked climate change”—Gordon Brown, prime minister of the United Kingdom;

“Generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children . . . this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal”—Barack Obama, president of the United States.

The science is so settled it’s now perfectly routine for leaders of the developed world to go around sounding like apocalyptic madmen of the kind that used to wander the streets wearing sandwich boards and handing out homemade pamphlets. Governments that are incapable of—to pluck at random—enforcing their southern border, reducing waiting times for routine operations to below two years, or doing something about the nightly ritual of car-torching “youths,” are nevertheless taken seriously when they claim to be able to change the very heavens—if only they can tax and regulate us enough. As they will if they reach “consensus” at Copenhagen. And most probably even if they don’t.

How did we reach this point? Ah, well. Like the proverbial sausage factory, you never want to look too closely at how the science gets settled. The other day, a whole bunch of electronic documents most probably leaked by a disaffected insider from the prestigious Climatic Research Unit at Britain’s University of East Anglia were posted online. Given that the CRU has conceded their authenticity, they provide a fascinating glimpse at the science underpinning the calm measured statements of Sarkozy, Brown, Obama, and wossname, the Belgian bloke—as well as of Kyoto, Copenhagen, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the “carbon credits” scam, the U.S. “cap and trade” monstrosity and every other major “climate change” boondoggle this century. They confirm what the soi-disant “skeptics” have long known:

1) The Settled Scientists have wholly corrupted the process of “peer review.”
Phil Jones, director of the CRU, writing to Michael Mann, creator (le mot juste) of the now discredited “hockey stick” graph, about two academics who disagree with him:
“I can’t see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report. Kevin and I will keep them out somehow—even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!”
Professor Mann on an academic journal foolish enough to publish dissenting views:
“Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers in, this journal.”

Professor Jones’s reply:
“I will be emailing the journal to tell them I’m having nothing more to do with it until they rid themselves of this troublesome editor.”
And you’ll be glad to hear they did!

2) The Settled Scientists have refused to comply with Freedom of Information requests by (illegally) deleting relevant documents.
Phil Jones to Michael Mann on Feb. 3, 2005:
“The two MMs [McKitrick and McIntyre, the latter the dogged retired Ontarian who runs the Climate Audit website] have been after the CRU station data for years. If they ever hear there is a Freedom of Information Act now in the U.K., I think I’ll delete the file rather than send to anyone.”
And, indeed, the CRU subsequently announced that they had “inadvertently deleted” the requested data.

3) The Settled Scientists have attempted to (in the words of one email) “hide the decline”—that’s to say, obscure the awkward fact that “global warming” stopped over a decade ago.
Phil Jones, July 5, 2005:
“The scientific community would come down on me in no uncertain terms if I said the world had cooled from 1998. Okay it has but it is only seven years of data and it isn’t statistically significant.”

4) The Settled Scientists have tortured the data into compliance with political requirements.

From the computer code for one of the “Mann” models:

“Plots (1 at a time) yearly maps of calibrated (PCR-infilled or not) MXD reconstructions of growing season temperatures. Uses ‘corrected’ MXD—but shouldn’t usually plot past 1960 because these will be artificially adjusted to look closer to the real temperatures.”

Yet perhaps the most important revelation is not the collusion, the bullying, the politicization and the evidence-planting, but the fact that, even if you wanted to do honest “climate research” at the Climatic Research Unit, the data and the models are now so diseased by the above that they’re all but useless. Let Ian “Harry” Harris, who works in “climate scenario development and data manipulation” at the CRU, sum it up. Mr. Harris was attempting to duplicate previous results—i.e., to duplicate all that science that’s supposedly settled, and the questioning of which consigns you to the Climate Branch of the Flat Earth Society. How hard should it be to confirm settled science? After much cyber-gnashing of teeth, Harry throws in the towel:

“ARGH. Just went back to check on synthetic production. Apparently—I have no memory of this at all—we’re not doing observed rain days! It’s all synthetic from 1990 onwards. So I’m going to need conditionals in the update program to handle that. And separate gridding before 1989. And what TF happens to station counts?

“OH F–K THIS. It’s Sunday evening, I’ve worked all weekend, and just when I thought it was done I’m hitting yet another problem that’s based on the hopeless state of our databases. There is no uniform data integrity, it’s just a catalogue of issues that continues to grow as they’re found.”

Thus spake the Settled Scientist: “OH F–K THIS.” And on the basis of “OH F–K THIS” the world’s enlightened progressives will assemble at Copenhagen for the single greatest advance in punitive liberalism ever perpetrated on the developed world.

Back in the summer, I wrote in a column south of the border:

“If you’re 29, there has been no global warming for your entire adult life. If you’re graduating high school, there has been no global warming since you entered first grade. There has been no global warming this century. None. Admittedly the 21st century is only one century out of the many centuries of planetary existence, but it happens to be the one you’re stuck living in.”

In response to that, the shrieking pansies of the eco-left had a fit. The general tenor of my mail was summed up by one correspondent: “How can you live with your lies, dumbf–k?” George Soros’s stenographers at Media Matters confidently pronounced it a “false claim.” Well, take it up with Phil Jones. He agrees with me. The only difference is he won’t say so in public.

Which is a bit odd, don’t you think?

Phil Jones and Michael Mann are two of the most influential figures in the whole “climate change” racket. What these documents reveal is the greatest scientific scandal of our times—and a tragedy. It’s not just their graphs but their battle lines that are drawn all wrong. Science is never “settled,” and certainly not on the basis of predictive models. And any scientist who says it is is no longer a scientist. And the dismissal of “skeptics” throughout the Jones/Mann correspondence is most revealing: a real scientist is always a skeptic.

It may well be that Warmergate has come along too late. I won’t pretend to know the motivations of Jones, Mann and their colleagues, but judging from recent eco-advertising their work appears to have driven worshippers at the First Church of the Settled Scientist literally insane. A new commercial shows polar bears dropping from the skies onto city streets and crushing the cars below. To those of us who still quaintly recall 9/11, it evokes grotesquely those poor souls who chose to jump from the Twin Towers and die in one last gulp of air rather than perish in the fireball within. But who cares? Their plight is as nothing next to that of the polar bear. Why are they plummeting to their deaths from the heavens? As the ad explains, “An average European flight produces over 400 kg of greenhouse gases for every passenger. That’s the weight of an adult polar bear.”
Oooookay. It’s A Warmerful Life: every time they call your flight, a poley bear loses its wings.

Some in the political class go along because it’s too much effort to resist. A few are presumably true believers. But what a lot of the rest like about “global warming” is the “global” bit: you can’t do anything about it at town or county or even national level. No, sir, we need a “global” response. Fortunately, as Herman Van Rompuy, “president” of “Europe,” puts it: “2009 is the first year of global governance.”

That’s great news, isn’t it? I would urge the delegates at Copenhagen to listen to the experts and issue a comprehensive statement fully reflecting the rigorous scientific evidence. Here’s my draft:

“OH F–K THIS.”

Someone ought to steal all of the Exxon-Mobil's e-mails and the e-mails of all the climate change deniers. I'm certain that those e-mails would reveal many interesting details about the methods and motivations of the denialist movement.

    • Who's in denial now?

"The denialist movement?" — I take it you're a member? You must be, considering your reply to the factual existence of the undeniable, serious, massive fraud implied by: …

      ‘yrloc=[1400,findgen(19)*5.+1904]
      ‘valadj=[0.,0.,0.,0.,0.,-0.1,-0.25,-0.3,0.,-0.1,0.3,0.8,1.2,1.7,2.5,2.6,2.6,2.6,2.6,2.6]*0.75 ; fudge factor

… was simply to change the subject.

"Pollution" is the proper name for dumping millions of tons of pollutants into the atmosphere and ocean. Of course, conservatives are pro-pollution, anti-science, pro-Palin, anti-Darwin, pro-oil addiction, anti-war, and very very much pro-BS.

Asking a conservative to comprehend science makes about as much sense as asking an atheist to understand fundamentalism.

  • http://www.flickr.com/dmathew1 David Mathews

$200 billion … God, those scientists must be burning hundred dollar bills … or you must be lying through your teeth.

Incidentally, the scientists don't become millionaires by virtue of their research. The oil industry does make billions of dollars off of its pollution, though. .

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/minaka minaka

The oil industry is funding many on the AGW side because they've figured out they'll make a mint when carbon becomes the new world currency.

  • http://www.flickr.com/dmathew1 David Mathews

Blah blah blah … and you dittohead drones are the same. Sarah Palin will save you!

As to the tax on energy, President Bush imposed a tax on energy in the form of 4000+ body bags returning the the Iraq oil war. Not that conservatives care about dead soldiers any more than they care about living in the sewer of their own pollution.

  • http://www.flickr.com/dmathew1 David Mathews

The conservatives don't believe in evolution and they are very much pro-pollution so these two points are relevant.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/minaka minaka

This is a discussion on global warming and the lack thereof. Pollution and creationism have nothing to do with the topic. But by all means if you insist on demonstrating your lack of comprehension of all things scientific over and over, blow your brains out.

The good news is that unemployment in the USA has dropped to 10%. The bad news is the unemployment data was compiled by the University of East Anglia.

    Conservative joke of the month:

The Republicans have a presidential hopeful … Sarah Palin. She's their intellect.

Unlike the Democrat Party's "intellect" Obama, Palin knows how many states are in the USA without being told.

They – the Global Government LIES to you… 1984 is upon us!!!
It's almost like H1N1, a test of public obedience to the prophets of gloom,
who are those prophets? the lovely global G8/G20, I believe in 1G only,
and that one does not call for carbon footprint reduction, but
sin reduction – WOW, I said it.

And on the top of that I don't feel bad about flying to Europe… at all, zero, I won't even confess it.

In 2004, Mark Steyn wrote: "I don't think it's possible for anyone who looks at Iraq honestly to see it as anything other than a success story… Even the most gung-ho Iranian theocrat doesn't expect the mullahs to be running the joint in ten years' time, or even five. In Syria, Boy Assad thought he could have fun destabilising the new Iraq. Instead, it's destabilising him. For the first time in years, there are serious protests against what is now the sole surviving Baath party." (Spectator, March 27, 2004)

Given this man's record of consistent wrongness on other issues, why should he be trusted on science?

    • Straw Man Steyn

OK, 'Woodrow' — don't trust Steyn on the Science.

Indeed, let us feed Steyn to the polar bears, or whatever — because, Steyn is not necessary. He is not relevant to the story.

With a couple or three well-worded searches in Google, or the search engine of their choice, anyone on the planet who is connected to the Intarwebz can read the 4558 files, including 1073 e-mails, amounting to 62 Mb, for themselves, and see the wilfull, inarguable and deliberate falsification of the climate simulations, right there in the "models" — and can read the e-mails by Drs. Jones and Mann (which they have publicly confirmed are genuine), where they collude to get incompliant science journals editors fired, etc.

      Steyn? A straw man.

If Steyn had never been born, the facts would be the same: clear evidence, in the CRU leak, of the deliberate and systematic falsification of science, purely in pursuit of political goals, — and an insistance by people like you, that nevertheless, politically correct answers to scientific questions are of more use than scientifically correct answers to political questions.

Given your apparent predilection for pointing away from the actual scandal here , why should we trust you?

  • Rob H

Mark skewers the bs artists yet again. The "science is in" all right, in trouble. The warmie industry is so huge now and has so many thousands of drones sucking the government money flower they will try to overwhelm even this outrage. Scientists, politicians, and media organizations have worshipped the "warmie" god made a good living from it but will now look like fools. Fortunately the jig is up and the internet bloggers will be exposing these "scientists" for what they are, religious nuts. James Hansen, the head of NASA climate research declared global warming as a fact over 20 years ago. Is it a surprise NASA, after spending tens of millions has declared it to be true. Mind you NASA is also being sued for refusing to release their data and methodologies. Hmmm.

Excellent read Mark Thankyou…It’s too bad big tv media hasn’t caught on or won’t.due to their being involved with creating panic on this very serious subject..

A bit of a side note on the TAR SANDS misinformation to discredit our province. Dummies, it’s NOT TAR, it isoil oozing to the surface on it’s own, We’re just refining it to privide Greenpeace with fuel for their next attack. Greenpeace should be running solar power in the vehicles if they truly give a hoot about our environment. These people are worse than terrorists….

  • bikeworm

But I'm afraid Climategate will not matter. Trust in computer models is absolute among people who know nothing about data analysis. But again, there is a great number of people educated beyond their capacity, particularly in the media, who desperately want to believe in something. So the mob is still chanting "the debate is over" and the politicians in Copenhagen will do what politically expedient which is redesigning the worl economy on the basis of computer simulation. If this is not insanity and the beginning of Dark Ages what is?

  • Russ

Hey! the floating fools picture at the start of your article missed Rudd, (Australia's lamentable PM)Watch him at Copenhagen, he is there to lobby for a new job as Secretary General of the UN, and possibly a Nobel prize,- Obama got one for doing nothing for 2 weeks, our captain Kev' has been doing nothing (apart from climate change scaremongering, and lobbying for a world stage reputation ) for the last 2 years. He will be the STAR!

The REAL PROBLEM has more to do with what the politicians did or have in mind to do with the man-made-CO2 global warming hoax. They are the ones who raised the alarm as a modern scare tactic that preceeds governement taxes, shinanigans, takeovers, socialist goals, etc. They created the hoax. They leveraged the bribes and grants to pay off some scientists to fake the "truth", They figured out how to make quadrillions of dollars by making the rich countries and people pay Big! Arguing about polar ice thinning, or thickening or whether someone pro global warming or against it will not change the climate by fraction of degree Fahrenheit. If the polar ice is melting or not all the world scientist and politician can jump up and down, do headstands or pirouettes, the ice will do what ever the current climate dictates.
The fact that global climate warming and cooling cycles were before humans ever set foot on this planet is not disputed even by the GW guru Al Gore. There is also well-documented evidence of climate changes in the last two millenniums.
What makes this climate change different is the use of mass media by pseudo scientists to stir up global hysteria about the dire consequences to the humanity unless shower the with money for “research” to prove that the climate changes due to CO2 emission.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/balabu balabu

Even B. Obama got into action and declared that CO2 is a pollutant that has to be eliminated. CO2 pollutant? If he refers to the CO2 that comes out his windpipe he might be right. Actually CO2 is an essential compound to enable chlorophyll of the plants to convert the sun radiation energy to chemical energy by producing carbon and releasing oxygen to the atmosphere. Were does the carbon in coal and oil come from? Its origin is from decay of plants and living organisms hundreds of millions years ago during the Carboniferous Period when the global temperature was warmer the climate humid, which encouraged plant growth.
Reducing CO2 emission and capturing CO2 (beside its impracticality) will have same effect on the climate as the sacrifice of young girls on top of Andes by the Incas to stop the days from getting shorter as the winter solstice approached.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/balabu balabu

The mere fact that AGW “scientists” resorted to withholding information; doctoring data to suit their hypothesis, destruction of documents and obstructing publication of critical papers is a proof that the AGW is a scam. The climate gate is only the tip of the iceberg. As with cockroaches if you find one in a house you can be sure that there are hundreds hiding in dark spots. There is lot of money at stake “research” funding, traveling to conferences, acting as advisors to banks for the cap and trade scam. The crooks will not resign to go on welfare. They will fight tooth and nails. They know that if they give up and admit the fraud all what they can do in the university is apply for janitors job.

  • bio lady

Are all my profs at Queen's University wrong about climate change? They seemed to believe in their own and other scientists data showing evidence of climate change effects (not necessarily man-made) without denying the Earth's past history of climate cooling and warming. When it comes to complex issues with so many variables such as the climate, it is expected that different scientific studies show conflicting results or data because of where and how they are performed and which variables they look at. This is the nature of science. People can find studies to support any agenda they choose. I am trusting the majority of experts in the scientific community and those who have taught me because they know much more about this issue than the media or anyone else and for the most part are objective and non-dogmatic. By following the scientific method, their opinions may change as more studies are performed to complete our view of this complex system.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/boardscott boardscott

As long as their opinion DOES change, and they are allowed to say so!

Many cases of Climate scientists who change from believing in Anthropomorphic Climate Change and then having doubts being lambasted and ridiculed as "Deniers" or puppets of the Fossil Fuel industry. World famous environmentalist and naturalist David Bellamy, for instance, was banned from the BBC for arguing against the climate change scare campaign!

Unfortunately, who can you trust? Funding from Governments is GUARANTEED if the phrase CLIMATE CHANGE is added to any study/grant request: that`s a fact!

Everyone has a vested interest, from the fossil fuel consumer worried about a more expensive cost of living to the anarchist who sees this as the greatest ever opportunity to bring modern society to its knees, to the harmless looking professor with the coke bottle glasses and wild, grey hair.

But, before we go any further, am I the only one who sees that the phrase "Climate change" is a big, fat oxymoron?

      • Graham

You know what? That last sentance summed up my whole problem with this "crisis". I haven't heard a single consensus in the media or otherwise of a definable problem and solution, except statistics that have been proven to not contain enough data to be considered hard evidence, or just proven false. When you think something is going to happen, and you do things that you believe will help without a better reason than "it seems right" then that's a religious practice, and you or professors at Queens can practice your religion all you want, just don't legislate it onto me. Oh, there have been many brilliant minds duped by various "good natured" movements throughout history, so I am not insulting the intelligence of Queens' professors, just that they obviously have different beliefs than me.

    • Graham

Oh I almost forgot, What are your profs areas of expertise? if none of them is meteorology then I am extremely sceptical. If they specialize in biology or zoology, then I am completely unconvinced. Their subconsious could easily block out reasonable doubt because all these green movements are supposed to save things they care about and have dedicated their life to. That's why nuclear power is not on the agenda, and that clearly shows the "touchy feely" bias of this whole climate change "crisis".

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/balabu balabu

Bio lady, what makes you to think that Professors in Queens University are not biased in promoting GW? It takes some courage in a University to espouse non-conformist not politically correct views. Their research funding is on the line. Since GW became a religion they would face open hostility if they had voiced dissenting views.

      • Graham

That's a really good thought that hadn't even crossed my mind about schools, since these treasured institutions hold so much clout in this battle because educators are supposed to be impartial portrayers of facts. I've never found that the case, but expressing that to someone with blind faith is tough without a solid point like that.

  • Graham

I just want one AGW supporter to answer this simple question: what exactly is warming up the planet guys? It's not the CO2, that's been proven beyond a reasonable doubt for about 2 years now. I haven't found a single study that stands up to the most basic scientific probing and I'm 20 years old. Wake up, and look at the what the facts prove: nothing. Everyones throwing around numbers and they all prove that we are really good at making charts and graphs out of data we collect/manipulate and making assumptions based that data. We don't just do it with climate change, we do it with people's health, safety, eating habits, and it's all for a profit. continued next post…

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/balabu balabu

what exactly is warming up the planet ? A lot of hot air emitted by AGW activists .

  • Graham

Imagine you learn how to manipulate statistics in school and you're unemployed or work a minimum wage job. Then someone is looking for a statistical analyst to study the effects of global warming. Then you're told that the data doesn't quite prove anything but we all know what's there, so it's your job to make it show what we all know. Would you do it for Global Warming? would you do it for people's health? If you know anyone who would answer yes to either of those than you can clearly see how easy it is for good people to be manipulated into doing things that harm society at someone else's gain.

George, you have had the courage to deplore the conduct of AGW science, but you seem unable to take the next honest step, which is to say that that MAY mean that the science itself is flawed. You rightly call for the data to be made available for (Popperian) falsification attempts, as it should always have been, yet you seem unwilling to wait for this to happen before resuming your AGW crusade. You risk looking like the Roadrunner who, having raced off a cliff, remains suspended in mid-air, legs whirling, as we await the inevitable plunge to earth.

Given the pivotal position of CRU, very little of what the IPCC relies upon for its science remains untainted by CRU "DNA". Furthermore, publication of an unknown number of "contrarian" opinions ofunknown scientific quality has been frustrated. You don't have to be a mouth-breathing denier to find this an unsatisfactory foundation for public policy.
