What a joke... ALL of his projections have been proven to be wrong. He's a shill who slam talked the economy into recession along with the rest of the LefTwit community. Notice this am our deficit is down even more than predicted by the government again (and Page's projections are off by an order of magnitude). Let's see, both GST and Personal Tax reciepts are up, UI payments are down $100M, the Bank of Canada is raising Interest rates to stop an overheated recovery. Yup, things are as bad as this guy projected. As a Queen's grad, I'm disgusted by him and his grandstanding.

How silly to see Page as a crusader fro the underdog! He's obviously a shill for the Conservatives. Didn't he work for Harper?? Now he's coming out in a mean-spirited way and setting the tone for future cuts to seniors! Based on his recommendations, Harper, Flaherty and the other neo-cons will have a clear field when they start their cutting this spring. And, true to their "common sense" roots, they'll pit the young against the old in this country: "First you create a crisis..."

That's the exact problem, though. The government is going to run a deficit this year, and that's almost unavoidable because of the economic climate. What Page is saying that they are *not* properly avoiding future problems, and that it will cost more as time goes on. A "structural deficit" is one where they're going to have to spend more than they make in perpetuity, due to their policies of tax cuts.

Flaherty is saying that's not the case, and that the growth in the GDP will replace the lost income from the tax cuts. Page is saying that's not the case, and that they'll be running deficits into the future.

One doesn't have to work for another party to see how badly the Reform/Cons are screwing things up in Ottawa. We need to get rid of them ASAP, before it's too late (if it isn't already).

Considering the shellacking that the Conservatives' image is taking over the proroguation of Parliament and the C.A.P.P. Facebook page that began as a young man's idea and turned into well-attended rallies nation-wide, I think sacking Page would make things even worse for the Cons.

On the other hand, they WERE dumb enough to prorogue in the face of a Parliamentary order to submit unredacted documents re. Afghan detainees. They were dumb enough to smear Richard Colvin, whose credentials and credibility rank above the stratosphere. Not to mention they couldn't keep their story straight on reasons for the proroguation!

So, I guess it could happen. (?)

If they were actually dumb enough to fire Kevin Page, I would donate a sizeable amount to keep his office going if such a trust fund were set up--and I don't think I'd be the only one. I'm sure, though, that there would be a think tank out there with the ability to fund his office at least partially.

of course there will be a deficit, this is the worst economic times in awhile, snowballing from some would say the early 90's, bumps in 99, and 03. So we have a deficit, in order to bring in more money to the government, they have to spend money, increase the ratio of profit. People think Debt, and influenced by their own personal spending, they think its bad. They don't realize this is a government, debt is okay, and as long as the interest isn't too out of wack..its okay. This money is spent to avoid future problems that can end up to cost more as time goes on.

Page fails to say that his projections are sans policy changes--which is why we have an elected govt--to do just that--change the policy--he also doesn't say that as a % of GDP--our debt isn't a significant impediment to the operation of Canada and the delivery of essential social programs--Medicare is a more serious issue-cost increases higher than inflation for a system with worse outcomes than other countries who spend less!

I think it's because the Conservatives are trying every bit of BS possible to convince voters to give them a majority mandate, whereas Page is a public servant who takes his job very seriously and doesn't feel that being a cheerleader for any political party is part of his job. That might explain the difference between his and Flat's projections.

More reason to like the guy, and I, for one, really like this guy.

Since Page and most economists are using the same data as Flaherty, how come Flaherty's and their projections are so far apart?

As an aside, Page is coming to represent for me that somewhat fuzzy can-do Canadian attitude of doing something significant without a great deal in the way of resources.

Way to go Kevin Page! Thanks for not proroguing yourself, but instead rolling up you sleeves and working on Canadians behalf, it is nice to know there is one single voice of reason coming out of empty Ottawa.

Can't wait to hear the report on whether the $47-billion stimulus program is working.

Frustrating is right! In our personal financial situations we have to know our numbers each month so that we can know where to cut and where to spend. How are the government books different? We need an accounting of the accounting!
Don't let up on your dogged ethical stance!
