NOW WITH FUN UPDATE! BREAKING: Was Rights and Democracy on the grassy knoll in Dallas??!?!!!!?

by Paul Wells on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 7:32pm - 121 Comments

It’s so good to find a sympathetic ear. And so the new board majority at Rights and Democracy must be so pleased to find Tim Mak, who splits his time in Washington between the National Post and David Frum’s website, where tonight he is breaking this shock-horror story suggesting Rights and Democracy might — before Aurel Braun and his confrères came riding over the hilltop to stage a gallant cavalry rescue — have bankrolled the Durban II conference in Geneva. Nut graf:

However, a FrumForum examination of United Nations annual reports show that the Canadian-based organization, Rights and Democracy — which received over $10 million from the Canadian government, or nearly 80% of its revenue — contributed nearly half a million dollars to the UN High Commission on Human Rights over the last several years. One FrumForum source puts the number closer to $700,000, accounting for unreleased 2009 figures. The UNHCHR is the parent organization for the Anti-Discrimination Unit, which organized Durban II in April of 2009.

I have fairly strong opinions about this story, but perhaps you are all tired of my fairly strong opinions, so I’ll leave you to read and discuss this one by yourselves. I’ll check back later to see how it’s all going.

UPDATE: In the comment section, anonymous comment-section person “Hannah” delivers a magisterial schooling upside the head of Tim Mak and his sources. Gee, that didn’t take long at all.

If it's found that they (R&D) did fund that gathering of hate in Durban they not only need to be suth down, but fired from the civil service.

    • Ted

Would you apply that same standard to the Harper government which, as Wells has pointed out, has funded UNHCRC 21:1 compared to R&D and funded the hatefests infinity:0???

      I'm guessing not.

Small, NGO with international reputation for protecting rights and democracy in the world and fulfilling its mandate, not funding hate organizations and hatefests: evil.

Federal government, sneakily gutting said NGO, showing absolutely no accountability, actually funding hate organizations and hatefests: good on ya!

Once again proving the proverb: Conservatives – our principles don't apply to us.

        Ted
This poorly written comment was meant to slag the officials in the civil service who funded the UN.
R&D is already taken care of in their universe.
Time to root out the racists in the gov't that fund the UN, is what robins111 is saying.

and alas I am sure it is happening as this Harper gang vandalizes its way through our gov't.

    Off topic but related:
I wonder if they can find some way to silence Ed Clark of TD Bank? I wonder if there any examples of Harper reaching out beyond the public sector into private companies?

    • Loraine Lamontagne

Indeed. Rights and Democracy. It is now a fact in Canada that if you speak against the government it will issue a memo to publicly denounce you, to reveal who you are dining with, how much money you make… Very unsettling.

I have been dead twice, according to Elections Canada. A member of my family must hate me, they told me. I think someone found my name on the public list of donors to a party other than the governing party and reported me dead. A nuisance, but better than having my brakes tampered with.

Be careful. They don't get sarcasm.

    Jack continues:

"anti-Semitism is not a whit more acceptable when deployed against the Arabs than it is when deployed against the Jews, and people like me have absolutely no tolerance for either form"

Yes Jack, but I'm thinking that "people like you" have a little more tolerance of one over the other. You can guess which form.

    Jack finishes with a flourish:
"the fact is that the forces of darkness in the West have selected a hatred for them as the main vehicle for their perennial agenda of destruction"

Oi Vey Jack……your tinfoil hat is a little too tight.

You're really determined to prove my case, eh? Please keep posting, I can hear the skeptics shrugging and thinking that I'm not so far off base after all.

    • JamesHalifax

That's it, Jack? Two lines is all you can come up with?

I don't blame you…….after the fisking I just gave you……..I don't blame you for not wanting to try it again.

The attempts to mop up any opinions or support contrary to revisionist Zionism can be found in Israel itself, where it is also coming up against some reality checks. Paul, meet Sima.

"hate-fest"?…And the newest post-child for political correctness is….

Anti-semitic. That string of letters has never been sufficiently defined with any sane consistency: likely destined for the linguistic trash bin alongside its drooling cousins "wicked cool" and "poo-poo head".

Frabkly, the term is so irrevocably linked in my mind with the hysterical speech of antiGentile lunatics like Meier Kahane and other assorted apologists for antiWestern scum like Pollard, the first natural reaction to its utterance is to call the local authorities.
