The absurd trial of Geert Wilders

The Dutch state is prosecuting the platform of the country’s most popular opposition party

The absurd trial of Geert Wilders

At a certain level, the trial of Geert Wilders for the crime of “group insult” of Islam is déjà vu all over again. For as the spokesperson for the Openbaar Ministerie put it, “It is irrelevant whether Wilders’s witnesses might prove Wilders’s observations to be correct. What’s relevant is that his observations are illegal.”

Ah, yes, in the Netherlands, as in Canada, the truth is no defence. My Dutch is a little rusty but I believe the “Openbaar Ministerie” translates in English to the Ministry for Openly Barring People. Whoops, my mistake. It’s the prosecution service of the Dutch Ministry of Justice. But it shares with Canada’s “human rights” commissions an institutional contempt for the truth.

As for “Wilders’s witnesses,” he submitted a list of 18, and the Amsterdam court rejected no fewer than 15 of them. As with Commissar MacNaughton and her troika of pseudo-judges presiding over the Maclean’s trial in British Columbia, it’s easier to make the rules up as you go along.

And in Amsterdam the eventual verdict doesn’t really matter any more than it did here. As Khurrum Awan, head sock puppet for Mohamed Elmasry, crowed to the Canadian Arab News, even though the Canadian Islamic Congress struck out in three different jurisdictions in their attempt to criminalize my writing, the suits cost this magazine (he says) two million bucks, and thereby “attained our strategic objective—to increase the cost of publishing anti-Islamic material.” Likewise, whether Mijnheer Wilders is convicted or acquitted, a lot of politicians, publishers, writers and filmmakers will get the message: steer clear of the subject of Islam unless you want your life consumed.

But at that point comparisons end. Had the CIC triumphed at our trial in Vancouver, the statutory penalty under the B.C. “Human Rights” Code would have prevented Maclean’s ever publishing anything on Islam, Europe, demography, terrorism and related issues by me or anybody of a similar disposition ever again. I personally would have been rendered legally unpublishable in Canada in perpetuity. But so what? I’m an obscure writer, and my fate is peripheral to that of the Dominion itself.

Geert Wilders, by contrast, is one of the most popular politicians in the Netherlands, and his fate is central to the future of his kingdom and his continent. He is an elected member of parliament—and, although he’s invariably labelled “far right” in news reports, how far he is depends on where you’re standing: his party came second in last year’s elections for the European Parliament, and a poll of the Dutch electorate in December found it tied for first place. Furthermore, if you read the indictment against him, you’ll see that among other things Wilders is being prosecuted for is proposing an end to “non-Western immigration” to the Netherlands: the offending remarks were made in response to a direct question as to what his party would do in its first days in office. So the Dutch state is explicitly prosecuting the political platform of the most popular opposition party in the country, and attempting to schedule the trial for its own electoral advantage. That’s the sort of thing free societies used to leave to Mobutu, Ferdinand Marcos and this week’s Generalissimo-for-Life.

To put it in Canadian terms, it’s like the Crown hauling Michael Ignatieff into court. Well, except for the bit about being the most popular politician in the country and ahead in the polls and whatnot. But imagine if Iggy was less tin-eared and inept and his numbers were terrific—and then the Ministry of Justice announced it had decided to prosecute him for his policy platform. That’s what’s happening in the Netherlands.

It gets better. The judge in his wisdom has decided to deny the defendant the level of courtroom security they afforded to Mohammed Bouyeri, the murderer of Theo van Gogh. Wilders lives under armed guard because of explicit death threats against him by Mr. Bouyeri and other Muslims. But he’s the one put on trial for incitement. His movie about Islam, Fitna, is deemed to be “inflammatory,” whereas a new film by Willem Stegeman, De moord op Geert Wilders (The Assassination of Geert Wilders), is so non-inflammatory and entirely acceptable that it’s been produced and promoted by a government-funded radio station. You’d almost get the impression that, as the website Gates of Vienna suggested, the Dutch state is channelling Henry II: “Who will rid me of this turbulent blond?”

The Wilders trial is a sad testimony to how far justice in my old "Fatherland" has sunk. I have written Mr. Wilders and informed him I pray for him and his courageous, yet dangerous stance.
Thank you, Mr. Steyn, and MacLean's, for taking up his cause in a wonderful writing style. Your writing is a weekly treat..

Thank you so much for your article Mark Steyn.
It is good to see that there is somebody out there that understands what Geert Wilders is about and has the balls to write it as it is!

    Great Job!

    • JMK

That is true! Mr. Geert Wilders is so courageous ! His love and respect for his country and fellow citizens is so great that he does not hesitate to risk his life for saving them of the cancer of islam. We need more Men like Him! Hopefully he will be acquitted of this shameful conspiracy and imitated by the politicians in the E.U.

If these kinds of laws or policies were on the books in England in the 1930s, Winston Churchill would have spent that decade in jail for defaming Hitler and the National Socialist Party. Then, in the 1940s, all the rest of England would have joined him in a vast concentration camp when the Nazi armies swarmed all over the British Isles.

  • Shy Guest

Geert Wilders has been accused of committing crimes .
He has not been convicted .
He is innocent unless and until a court rules otherwise .
So , Holland is not a threat to civilization .

Mark Steyn , however , is definitely known as a superior writer .

Sadly , he writes propaganda for a foreign power which is acting
increasingly hostile to every other country in the world .

It is a nuclear armed rogue state with a government that acts like they are above such
minor details as laws and treaties .
    It's neither N. Korea nor Pakistan .

    • Darden Cavalcade

I knew those Obama people were wolves in sheeps' clothing. "…increasingly hostile to every other country in the world…nuclear armed rogue state with a government that acts like they are above such minor details as laws and treaties… ."

Well traveled fellow, aren't you, Shy Guest.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/minaka minaka

Shy Guest is shy several bricks of a load. Wilders has been dragged into a kangaroo court where truth is not a defense for speaking the truth. Free speech is the keystone of our Western civilization which is inarguably advanced over the rest of what the world has on offer. So Holland's behavior IS in fact a threat to civilization.

  • PCsucks

Islam is death. The Netherlands is under attack and helping the parasites take over. After all, that's what this is all about. They will breed their way to power. Also, the government leaders are scared sh#tless of them. If not, they wouldn't put up with their bs. Go Wilders!

  • http://al-terity.blogspot.com/ tempo dulu

Wilders has to be given protection because of threats of murder against him. And he is facing trial for using his right of free speech? Uh?!!!!!!! What has happened since WW 2? This isn’t the sort of “free Europe” that so many men and women gave their lives for. Shameful Holland, shameful.

sooner or later islam will have to be buried.

Sharia law is a religion not a race!!!
Sharia law is barbaric and how the hell did they get into europe, with their inhumane beliefs,. there already celebrating there population expantion over europe,(and slowly they draw there plans against us good battle plan ehh!!!!,.

  • Sue

The take over in the UK is almost complete, they are outbreeding us by 8 to 2, mosques appearing everywhere, we already have Sharia Law, giant halal slaughterhouses to be built with EU grants and our government is the main culprit – yes they planned it all – its called the multicultrural experiment, well guess what it's all gone wrong. The immigrants don't like each other so the battle begins. Just look to Italy over the past two months – Africans fighting with South Americans. Geert Wilders is so right in criticising Islam, it's taking over the world by stealth.

It's about high time I left a comment on your column, Mr. Steyn. Because every time I read it I can hardly believe that, yet again, you are writing what my common-sense is thinking. Wow! There are other logical, non-emotional, minds working out there! Thank you for having the courage to frankly expose for what it is the muck that is more and more passed off as governance and justice, and Macleans for providing the platform.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Trebla7 Trebla7

I read your column the same day I watched a documentary on the corruption of the Russian government. When editors were brave enough to try and expose this corruption they were met with indifference by the public. The government, on the other hand, soon closed them down, usually by killing them. I'm sure your article on Geert Wilders also met with a lot of indifference. And it will be our government through the Human Rights commission that will attempt to shut you down as well.

As to indifference, what can we expect from a public that is indifferent to a lyric in Andrew Lloyd Webers musical "No matter what they tell you; No matter what they say; No matter what they teach you; What you believe is TRUE. The whole audience should have shouted "You are totally wrong". Truth is central to freedom.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/minaka minaka

This comment had fragments of truth in it but is logically incoherent. Pretending that unless we play by Marquess of Queensberry rules while our sworn enemy fights on all fronts with no holds barred, we are "descending to their level" is idiotic and suicidal. We will never descend to the level of barbarians who follow the ravings of an 8th century grasping warlord and kill each other for sundry disgusting reasons they mis-label "honor" while trying to inflict the same benighted sharia law anywhere they infest/colonize. Muslims are the biggest killers of Muslims in the world. They are one side of every conflict in the world today. They are an existential threat to civilization in their primitivism and must be fought by any means necessary to stop them in their tracks.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/minaka minaka

Thank you for this information from an insider. The last paragraph sounds as though the Nazis actually succeeded in taking over the Netherlands! However, it's their sister totalitarianism, leftism that has infected all your institutions while you were not paying attention. In turn, the leftists are enabling the totalitarianism of Islam thinking to use it as a battering ram to gain control. They have badly miscalculated there. Leftists will find themselves beheaded first with their agenda of feminism, abortion, gay rights, sexual libertinism and multiculturalism that is an anathema to Islamists.

Superb column, as always. I find myself in absolute agreement with nearly every point made, but I have one criticism — please don't defame that excellent monarch Henry II by association with those bullying cowards in The Hague.

Saying that Ronnie was just backing a plain old 'insurgency', and not the Islamic kind is kind of like saying that a tweaker is just medicating himself, not injesting meth. They knew this was a DANGEROUS ISLAMIC MOVEMENT, plain and simple. After the events in Iran, this was just plain crazy. The U.S. is doing the same thing, all over again, BTW, by backing the Fethullah Gülen movement (and sheltering the old bugger, to boot). Funny how conservatives, so quick to criticise Obama for playing the 'nuance' card, defend Reagan for the same thing.

The U.S. SHOULD have 'stolen their oil'. Rolling into Saudi Arabia would've been a far easier job than driving the Iraqis out of Kuwait. There was no need to defend the rotten Kuwaiti monarchy. At any rate, there should've been MASSIVE, VIOLENT retalliation against Saudi Arabia, after 9/11, for supporting and exporting Islamic terror. The U.S., Canada, Britain and other NATO countries should also have liquidated Salafi mosques and jihadi front organisations, like CAIR.

Reagan's porkbarrel deficit madness had nothing to do with building "a strong military". That 600 ship Navy will never fight any war in the forseable future. The SDI and NASP/Orient Express/X-30 programmes were one massive financial black hole, sucking up half a trillion that could've been used to hire troops, buy heavy lift aircraft and fighting vehicles, &c. The only beneficiaries were the contractors (General Dynamics, Lock-Mart) who pumped millions into the Ronnie campaign. Silly, expensive tech like lasers and the F-22 aren't being used in actual conflicts, like Afghanistan and Iraq. In fighting radical Islam, the best tools are cheap ones, like deporting Imams and padlocking mosques.

A stick always works better than a carrot. To paraphrase that lad on 'Team America', the U.S. is consistently acting the part of a pussy. With Salafism/Wahhabism, what needs to be done is what was done with cancers like Aum Shinrikyo and the Thuggee Cult–complete extirpation.

This isn't an unprecedented activity for Amsterdam judges. Some helped the Gestapo round up Jews in the 40's. They're simply continuing an established tradition of caving in to whatever de jour evil occupies their country at any given time. There are a number of links on the web listing hundreds of passages from the Koran illustrating its intolerance, its bigotry, its hatred, its sexism, its anti-Semitism, its homophobia, its homicidal tenets instructing votaries to murder every soul on earth refusing to enter the fold. This is the book that the Dutch establishment feels is beyond criticism. It wasn't that long ago they felt the same way about "Mein Kampf" and "The Eternal Jew".

  • Realist

I am always frustrated when any attempt to speak against islam results in comparisons with Nazis. Nazis were against a people who had done nothing wrong. Jews had integrated into society, coexisted peacefully with Germans, respected local religions and culture. We cannot say the same for followers of islam! Every country in the West has seen what Islam is really all about and the lie that islam is a religion of peace is preposterous!

All you idealist out there need to wake up and realise that if muslims are allowed to match or even superseed the population of non-muslims, all Western freedoms will end. Womens' rights and gay rights will fall away and any chance of speaking against islam will result in violent uprisings!

There are plenty of hardworking, peaceful immigrants ready to integrate into our societies. The West does not need muslims!

  • Mario

What no one seems to understand is, this happens in Europe (a bit less in Canada–hardly at all in the US) because of Europe's socialist system. Get rid of the nannay state, and you'd have outstanding newly arrived citizens.

  • Maclean's Regular

"would have prevented Maclean’s ever publishing anything on Islam, Europe, demography, terrorism and related issues by me or anybody of a similar disposition ever again."

    Imagine our dismay.

Mark Steyn (sic) should be prevented from publishing his grocery list, much less anything truly substantive.

Could the Dutch bobsled team turning chicken serve as paradigm for the Netherland's national ethos these days?

    • pk10

      Yes!
      Yes!
      Yes!
His mom apparently told him it was too dangerous to go down and he chickened out…………

Mark Steyn, what would freedom-fighers do without your
astute and ironic exposes? I find it shocking that free people
self-censure and impose censorship on those who dont.
As a warrior feminist from way back, I am disgusted by these
sneering young muslims covered from head to foot pretending
to be 'modest' – with a reproduction rate beyond rabbitery,
its hard to know what part is being modest. Government needs
to stop the immigration of those who refuse to integrate and
who, by the way, feel so superior and powerful that they tell us
to our faces that they will either annihilate or dominate us.
Mary, why do you think governments are cowed? Is it for
votes? Or, what? I have two university degrees and still
cant figure our why governments are so cowardly in the fact
of muslim invasions all over the West.

    • Maclean's Regular

You Steynettes are getting more psychotic with each passing day.

    STOP MIDDLE EASTERN IMMIGRATION!!!
This is a chance for Canada once again. Screen out arabs and other non-westerners that clearly don't mesh with the rest of us. Look for( true) European immigrants that want to come here and escape the sinking ship of Western Europe.
Yes, you read me right! Racially profiled quality immigration from Europe! That's how Canada and The US actually built their respective countries back in the 1800's. Read your history books about Canadian immigration. I did!
The entire human race is racist and tribalist to one degree or another. Some races are intensly tribalist, and arabs are definately among the very worst offenders in this regard.. Face it! Multiculturalism only works with peoples of fairly similar demographic or indiginous history. Canada and the USA were built by europeans FOR europeans.
Politically incorrect? Yes indeed. I don't care! GET OVER IT!!!

  • pk10

Now the first part of your reaction is quite to the point, but you've definitly lost your marbles in the second part.
The Netherlands is not some kind of totalitarian police state where you're every step is monitored.
Democracy is at stake, that is bad enough, but it is a blatant lie to state that "they follow and record every car driven by every Dutch to everyplace, they are creating a database of keeping the fingerprint, race, ethnicity of every Dutch citizen, every internet use, telephone conversation and email is copied and registered," etc etc etc.

  • allahtakesituptheass

    A jihad on muslims.

  • Captain Canuck

Thank you Mark for having the courage to say what many are afraid to in this country. My thoughts are that this fuzzy , arrogant multicultural experiment is not working and never has , read some history folks. We are openly inviting a menace that will be much more difficult to remove than it would have been to prevent it's coming.
Over educated liberal types always ramble about the benefits of multiculturism and such , but take a look at Europe , do you think the indigenous populations of these countries continue to see the "benefits" of islamic Immigration.
Many people fail to realise that once western culture and political clout has been eroded to the point that westerners no longer hold control of they're own countries that we won't get it back and do you suppose that muslims once they have control will be as welcoming and liberal as we have been towards them?
I'm white and proud of it , I love my ancestry , my country and anyone who truly embraces this country .
The preservation of the western culture and cutoms is not racism.
